Makes me miss my Homer’s. I hadas many as 60 young birds and about 8 pair of breeders at one point. I was in a racing club and used manual clocks right before digital ones came out. We raced for fun and the prize was a bag of feed. Nice video!

First buncha Homers I got was took one at a time by a Peregrine roosting across the road the instant I let them out. Turns out, the neighbor would throw wheat and stuff on her front lawn for pigeons, and of course a local Peregrine noticed this regular habit and took to counting heads and taking names from her rooftop tv aerial as she tossed the wheat out on the lawn for them. Funniest memory, a flock of feeding pigeons suddenly realising they are being watched by the local Peregrine falcon, not 20 feet away on the tv aerial, its little hooded silhouette framed against the afternoon sun, the aerial like a glaring scythe, and below it a little old lady on the front lawn throwing wheat about for the pigeons to eat. I'd say they stopped eating and froze momentarily before their terror and panic sent them off into flight. But it was more like Time stood still for a heartbeat or two. The falcon made those birds look slow and high revving, their wings was a blur of speed but they was going nowhere as fast as that falcon was on a lazy wingbeat. I never saw the falcon swoop on my birds, I was too close and all I'd see is my bird fall dead out of the tree topmost branch onto the lawn and my flock scattered, I'd never kept them long enough they followed any flock they felt like and other fanciers ended up keeping my birds. It wasn't a big deal that pet falcon was way cooler.

I had rollers that rolled as a kid and a. I was early teens. No kit coop, no feed control, just turned loft loose and enjoyed the rolls my birds did. Does anyone want to enjoy them as I did and not be so serious. I don't want to compete, just enjoy my rollers in my back yard.

Sparrow hawk can not catch the rollers in the air , they are ambushers catching perching birds . It is the peregrine that catches the pigeons in the air . You keep saying you have rollers I am very sorry so far that I have seen your videos you only have loose tumbling birds . I am very sorry I don’t want to be rude but you have no rollers that I have seen so far. It is a misleading remarks using the word rollers .
@LozHarrop3 жыл бұрын
Sparrow hawk hens can and do take rollers in the air I have watched them take mine and several have been attacked while flying and yes I know the difference between various hawks
@sanc473 жыл бұрын
@@LozHarrop peregrine uses 3 tactics to catch the rollers 1- to catch a fit healthy pigeon the peregrine goes up and high then comes downwards ( using the gravity to build up the ultimate speed) and hits the pigeon . This usually happens when pigeon is flying on a straight line fortunately, rollers most of the time flying round . 2- both peregrine and sparrow hawks fly gently round the kit in the sky looking innocent and gaining the trust of the pigeons then gradually get closer and when close enough accelerate towards the weakest roller and hit it if it fails and chaos happens in the kit peregrine still has a chance to catch one. 3- Both Sparrow hawks ( large female) and peregrines can just chase an unfit roller and catch it or a youngster roller that is just learning to fly . I used to write pigeon articles for AERC ( All England Roller Club) and had rollers for nearly 40 years since I was a kid

you just said sparrow hawks cannot catch rollers in the air. now you say they can if the bird is unfit. Im not going to argue with a troll
