It's not the levels -- the microphone sounds horrible when the host is speaking into it, too. Maybe the mic was crapping out on them that day... or, is this a $7.99 home karaoke machine mic being used for studio duty? What is totally unprofessional, of course, is not giving the guest her own mic in the first place and then failing to monitor the audio during a live broadcast.

geetarbube thats the issue. The microphone has been adjusted to suit the guys voice, his tones. Set a mic for a person with a basey voice so it doesn't reverberate and reduces the base, then put someone with a higher pitched voice on that mic, and its sounds like a different mic and won't do their voice any justice. In this case, its a similar thing. Same mic = the issue.

He’s louder because he’s eating the mic, it’s very close to his mouth when he speaks, when he puts it in front of her the mic is several inches away from her mouth, she would be just as loud if he put it closer. This accounts for the output difference.
