@@danceswithveilslily9342 I don’t know if I would say easier because they’re short staffed too and some residents are atleast 2 person assist, but the nice environment and the benefits you get from caring for people with money make it a little more pleasant than the nursing home.

​@danceswithveilslily9342 Yes I have worked in a nursing home , assisted living, methadone clinic, regular clinic and now substance use in an office setting. Next month will be four years, I have been an LPN. Assisted living there, aren't all those treatments, and the med pass isn't too bad.

I thought of becoming an LPN. (Here in L.A it’s “LVN”). I’m a Massage Therapist & the stability of healthcare is tempting to me. Might sound like a silly question,but are you on your feet for the entire 7-8 hour shift? Or just when you pass medications/other duties?

Go for it! There is a nursing shortage due to the aging population and nurses are retiring. And for this particular job I was mostly on my feet during med pass/duties. I had a good amount of down time.

I'm an LPN and passed my NCLEX (my whole class passed on their first time) on my first try. I'm not going to sugar coat it for anyone, LPN/LVN is the hardest program compared to any nursing program (RN) and this was said by both my professors (both have their masters in nursing). Please prepare yourself financially before committing, because a lot of girls had to go on per diem while in school. This program is full on dedication and it's hard, but it's totally worth. At the end of the day make sure it's something you truly want to do.

@@chiobabe2180 Yes, I used ATI that my college provided me with, but I mostly used Nexus Nursing. I did not use simple nursing or another program that you have to pay for. Nexus Nursing is free, and she tells it like it is. My professors and Nexus nursing helped me pass nursing school and the NCLEX. Everyone learns differently so what I did might not work for you, but I wish you the best of luck!!

Hi thanks for this view point. Can you tell us more less what communication to the physicians is like? What kind of stuff do you report to them or what questions do they usually have for nurses in assisted living

You’re welcome, and in this setting you communicate with physicians about orders, medication changes and requests,falls, any acute changes you notice in the patient and let them know if you sent a patient to the er. You can contact them about abnormal vitals and get prn orders for high blood pressure, fever etc. This depends on the facility because some facilities the DON and the assistant deal with physicians and paperwork. What state are you in? In mine, we have no med techs. we also dont do bar codes and in many AL's, no EMR for med pass. 50 residents are a standard for them and many are no longer appropriate but are kept there due to being placed on hospice. Sadly, this video makes it look easy. I am hoping for you that it is, for many nurses it is not. Pre pouring is the only way to get a med pass done so you aren't still doing it from 7a to 11a even though we all know that isn't textbook or would pass state, much less safe. But especially when you see how large these places are and the nurse is expected to be all over the building.... Do you have memory care there? We are expected to do that area too which is more intensive as each med needs to be crushed and often it takes time to get those meds in the resident. Treatments are not unheard of either. I'm not hating at all on your video and I am actually envious of what I see here, no falls, no c/o chest pain, no caregivers calling off lol.....for lots of us, its a 12 hour shift with no assistance on a med pass running short of aux staff with residents who are not appropriate and there is barely any time to assess. At least in my area, ALF are becoming more dangerous than SNF's.

Thank you for your comment and I’m in Georgia. And this was my first Assisted living facility that I worked and it’s in a very affluent neighborhood so it was smaller and did not have memory care. We did have to deal with some of the things you mentioned especially short staffing and falls but that wasn’t an everyday thing, maybe weekly. For chest pain and other emergencies they are sent to the hospital. As far as treatments, wound care, and hospice all that is done by companies of their families or insurance choice. And I agree they are dangerous because a lot of residents need more medical care then the assisted living provides and most families are in denial and the facilities want the money.

Do it, it’s worth it! And don’t feel old, the time is going to pass by anyway. I would start looking at LPN schools and look at their pre requisite requirements and application deadline dates.

Hey I'm in RN school, but I'm recently divorced and am starting my second job soon, so I think I'm going to switch to LPN. All I want to do is long-term care, but I'll feel guilty if I switch programs. I'm concerned that I physically can't survive 2 jobs full time plus RN school, so what I'm trying to ask is this- Do you feel that you get to spend a good amount of one-on-one time with your patients as an LPN vs if you were there as an RN? I'm a CNA now, and I'm also worried that if I'm an RN, all I'll basically be doing is computer & meds when what I want to do most is the actual bedside care. I just can't survive on a CNA salary. Any tips on my switching from RN to LPN, please? Thank you. I really appreciate your video!

Honestly I’ve heard the RN program is little more slower paced than the LPN program and it may be easier for you to work. I think that because LTC is normally short staffed you don’t get to spend much time with your patients whether you’re an Lpn or RN. If you feel more at peace switching to LPN I’d go for it, but in my honest opinion I’d stick with the RN program while you have the opportunity because of LTC burns you out you’ll have much better job options and better pay. So you only pass meds once in a assisted living facility?

It’s depends on the shift and the pt’s orders. On day shift you have the morning med pass which is the biggest imo and then you might have a lunch med pass where 5 ppl have orders at noon or treatments. I think the residents at this facility always refused their lunch meds. On pm shift you check blood sugars and give insulin before dinner, and give bedtime meds, and if they have an 11-7 shift you’re mostly giving meds at 6 am.
