I don't trust the on/off feature of the mount, but I have to acknowledge it works. I still testfire upon arrival and if the takedown case hadn't been so nifty, I would still have travelled with a longcase (that screams guns!!!) and kept the scope mounted. However, with the takedown case dropped into a larger suitcase, I can cut 1 piece of luggage from my airfare and that means I usually get a significantly cheaper ticket.

Thanks a lot Trevor. It wasn't really difficult, just painfully slow and I really missed having a bergstock for balance. As a kiwi, I guess you are familiar with the term "scree elevator". I find those and wet alpine grass worse. I had a few patches of scree going down, but very small areas and nothing that couldn't be solved simply by sitting down on my ass and reaching with the feet. But yeah, the carry is awkward. The alpine sling and net makes it very secure, but not comfortable. The bulk and fragility of the camera gear doesn't help either...

My headlamp is only 300 lumens and more than enough for this - just remember to use lithium and not alkaline batteries.

We don't have chamois in Norway, so I only see them on these trips which just makes the adventure that much bigger. Also, with this restriction, I will never reach the familiarity or skill level of the locals so every trip is a good learning experience too. Man I love these mountain hunting videos! Thanks! I'm looking for a K95 myself. Taking into account I don't reload and I'd like to use a supressor, do you recommend a 6,5CM over a 6,5x55 or x57? Or none with such a short barrel?
@THLR
@THLR Жыл бұрын
I would not choose the x57R, simply because it increase the cost of ammunition and most likely makes supply both limited in choice and unreliable. If you live in "x55 country" like I do, the x55 is THE best choice but if your local market doesn't lean towards the x55, the Creedmoor is the future-proof 6,5 choice. Neither cartridge offer any palpable advantage over the other in the hunt and either cartridge is a good choice. Let cost and supply steer your choice. Personally I take cost x 3000 to get an estimate of how much extra money I will waste over the life of a single barrel; it adds up big money... (In Norway almost every match shooter use x55 hence the abundant supply and lower cost, so for me every choice other than 6,5x55 needs a very real justification for me to buy. My 221 Fireball is legislation and my x57R is the extremely limited selection of secondhand K95s here)
@jbr9433
@jbr9433 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Looks like your 6,5x55 barrel is a 52cm one, is it? Do you find it misses something? Would you feel confortable shooting a red deer with the x55 at “normal” ranges? (300m or so). Thanks!
@THLR
@THLR Жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. My x55 barrel measures 56 cm from the very end to the muzzle. So less than 50cm rifled barrel is a plausible number, I do not have the tools to measure exactly. It gives around V0 840-850 msec with 120-130gr bullets and Vit N560 powder at "less-than-published-max" reloads.

@ 5:57 it appears U 2 have seen the need to make your own palm swell to fill voids caused by big hands and minimize hand torquing affecting shot release/bullet placement & also trigger finger length to once again minimize side stock pressure inputs during shot release??
@THLR
@THLR Жыл бұрын
Pretty accurate analysis. I wish I had more control over where the trigger blade is, but alas no. This rifle is now being re-stocked and hopefully soon ready for new adventures. The rifle didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of shooting performance, but it has certainly been a catalyst for seeking new adventures.

Have you considered trying the PELTOR Tactical Earplug TEP-100 electronic hearing protection? I use them stalking as I can wear them for hours without discomfort They won't offer you 100% of the protection of the over ear models, but for stalking and a single shot or two it gives you 95% the protection with 10x the comfort and convenience. No more headache from the band pushing, no more snagging on branches etc

Thanks for the tip! Many years ago I did look into earplugs for the very same reasons you mention, but at the time they jusn't didn't cut it. You certainly couldn't wear them for hours (sweaty and painful) so judging from your comment, these earplugs are obviously more sophisticated today. Very simple: K95´s are rare in Norway, and I bought this rifle secondhand. "Nobody" wants a 6,5x57R here, which put it in an affordable pricerange for me. Hi Thomas, As far as the weather the terrain goes, stuff that!😀 You're a better man than me, Question why did you move away from the 6.5x55?
@THLR

I didn't, I have both barrels/ calibers. Bought this rifle secondhand with X57R barrel. However 6,5x55 is a lot more handy and better suited for practice. Both cartridges perform identical on game (the V0 difference is 3 msec w 123gr) but the x55 is slightly more precise. For this hunt, the R (rimmed) cartridge fit my idolised idea of gamsjagd.

@@LexLuthor1234 6,5x57R vs 6,5x55 or vs the 6,5 PRC? 6,5x57R was simply the caliber my secondhand rifle was, the 6,5x55 barrel is the economical choice and the 6,5 PRC was the easiest logistics for higher V0 on copper bullets and heavier lead bullets - no need to stack extra bullets, and no dead capital sitting on the shelf.

Fantastik film altså! Overvejer kraftigt en K95 som supplement til min R8. Vil du vælge 6.5x55 over 6.557R hvis du skulle købe fra ny?
@THLR
@THLR Жыл бұрын
Mange takk.

Thomas, I hunt in an area that has all three species of poisonous snakes in North America. We also have gators 🐊 and pythons. Let me tell you, I’m more afraid of those razor sharp rock. Btw, you didn’t ruin your stock on the hunt, you massacred it a while back with your “customization” lol. I like the 270 Winchester, with a 130 Partition, or a 129 LRX.

You really don't want to fall here! Really missed a bergstock, would have helped a lot. Had to sit down on my ass several times to make sure I didn't lose balance. Keep the snakes, the gators and leather item made from them 🙉

The rifle is a bit pricey (sky is the limit, it is fairly popular with luxury gunsmiths). Got mine secondhand, so on par with a Sako. Had some initial regrets, but after using it and fitting it, I find that this rifle has been a catalyst for going on adventures. So all-in-all happy with the end result.

I have a few thousand left of my Amax stock, they were sold here in 1000pcs buckets then bulk 2000/2500 cartons at very reasonable prices years back. I stockpiled and still draining that supply, glad I did as prices are 3x what I paid then.

Dramatic landscape, have you experimented with wool clothing rather than the "hi-tech" modern materials? I like it for outdoor gear you might not be bone dry but easy to maintain a comfortable temperature.
@THLR
@THLR Жыл бұрын
My baselayers are almost always 100% wool done in the typical nordic weaves (Aclima, Devold). I don't like it for my shell layer, too heavy and water from the ground soaks through near instantly. We annually have 250-270 days of precipitation so it gets old fast...
@mrln247

@@THLR I stupidly hadn't thought about the soaking through prone aspect, although I just avoid the ground when it's wet either sitting on a pad or off sticks so I can get away with the wool.

@@mrln247 no worries. In drier areas I quite like wool. Used a surplus wool paint for many years when I hunted roebucks in forestry. Topped with an impregnated fleece jacket (to bead water) it was quite nice - soft, silent, warm and airy.

@@THLR In the British winter you will very rarely find me on the ground out of choice but we all forget the pro-tip about not falling sometimes, some surplus gear is definitely excellent. Not quite found the exact garments I think I want but something like a functional great coat is the idea. For work rain gear in Forestry I just use fishing gear impossible to wet it out but a bit sweaty.

@@mrln247 I actually find that fishing gear (especially gloves) often are the best stuff for wet and cold contact points. I love my ice fishing neoprene rubber gloves, cheap - effective - stinky.

14:03 this shot…. It’s hard to tell…. But in our hunting education classes in the USA, we teach our new hunters not to take shots like this because it is potentially dangerous and unethical. You must know what is beyond your target before taking a shot. It looks like it’s a hill top silhouette shot. Bullets travel extremely far. You don’t or may not know what is over the hill beyond your target. There could be a boat down there with people on it. We teach our hunters in the USA not to take hill top silhouette shots.

Sound arguments and we teach the same. But a low-mounted wideangle GoPro lens does not show the correct image or shooting angle. It was a downhill shot with an animal into the rockface extending more than double the animals height. But thanks for your concern and forthright comment, I very much appreciate fellow hunters pointing out safety concerns. "I was there" is of course my perspective, and that sometimes makes me forget how a film can be perceived.

Absolutely agree, and that's why I'm keeping it. I can't afford to take this project or myself too seriously and prodding with the cringe/WTF!? stick in every episode is a good reminder. But other than that, I am pleased with the progression of the films. I am constantly learning to capture the landscapes and sounds better, and hopefully next year I will have absolutely steady films of the chamois as well as filming the shot properly (have utterly failed to do so with chamois).

14:09 this is an unethical shot… An accidental high shot by even a little and the bullet goes over the hill and hits something way farther away that you can’t see. Another hunter, hiker, fisherman, boater, anyone could be on the other side of that hill. You can’t see it. You must know what is beyond your target before taking a shot. Hill top silhouette shots are unethical. We are taught this as children in hunter education courses in the USA. You don’t take sky line hill top shots like this. Too close for my call.
