Hi Tom, Blaser dealer here. Have seen many K95s snap here. The wood is extremely thin around the tang. It can be repaired with epoxy, choose a very thin (watery) epoxy so it penetrates the wood to really bond it. Or have a go at making yourself a carbon fibre stock to replace it! I have made several for clients. Awesome video!

My K95 stock unfortunately had a thin crack as well in that region which was fixed with Epoxy. I just know the FBT stocks that are available for the K95 as well. Are you referring to this stock or are there alternatives from other manufacturers on the market for the K95?

As always, a nice and very informative video, Tom. What I didn't like as a game warden was the shot at the sitting chamois buck. According to the Austrian hunting tradition, this is actually totally rejected and I'm surprised that the professional hunter allowed this shot. Thanks for showing and talking about your misses. I made the same mistake 2023. Easy shot on a reddeer and pulled the trigger as soon as i was in the middle of body. No natural Point of aim, no breathing, just triggerhappy. Clean miss.

With the benefit of hindsight it's easy to learn from these mistakes. Of course it is best to not make the mistake in the first place (hardly realistic considering how prone humans are to error), but once the mistake is made, be glad you took something away from it without causing a problem.😅

Weidmannsheil from Tyrol 🌿 As a chamois hunter myself i made the same mistakes as you have shown. Your explenation was spot on. What i have learnd from this situations is to try to calm down and don't break a shot to fast. I know it's not easy as in hunting chamois there are often just secondes where a shot could have been made, but i found it's often better to just pass an oportunity if i can't get a clean and calm point of aim. Congratulations on your Stutze, hope it will bring you many years of joy. I have already the replacement stock in hand, it is off for bedding and reinforcement now. Not something traditionally done, but I heard Krieghoff did this with some of their competition shotguns, so figured it can´t hurt. I really enjoy the ritual of oiling the wood, the atmosphere is just nice. English gunsmiths are fairly used to wet weather and wood, so I´m following their procedures for saturating/oiling the wood. I experimented on this stock and it was surprisingly easy to do, only required time and patience.

@steinbock14 Sorry, I had no idea this was a break against tradition. The mentioned tradition makes sense, when the animal is lying down the vitals are usually covered or the path through the vitals will cause unneccessary damage to the carcass. I have no problem adjusting to local requirements. This autumn I shot all but one red deer in the head, simply because the estate asked me to deliver the carcasses as clean as possible and a head/neck shot is normal for a scottish professional. Our domestic traditions are mostly governed by law, appr "do not hunt in a manner that cause unneccessary suffering or risk of damage [to third party]..." (the game law §19). This is in no way to talk down the local traditions, but I believe the ethics are the same for all three perspectives, allthough they manifest differently. No hunter wants the animal to suffer. In this particular case I could see the humerus bone and had a clear path through the vitals (without touching spine or exploding scapula), so I had no issue taking the shot as I was unaware of the local tradition and simply looked for a clean, killing shot. Sorry that I disrespected your traditions.(for some reason the answer doesn't "stick" under your comment)

Thank you for your comment, Tom. To be clear: neither shooting at the head nor shooting at a sitting animal is prohibited under Austrian law. But what both cases have in common is that this practice is totally frowned upon among traditional hunters here. That's what I'm talking about und I'm quite sure you understand.

What was your verdict on the Blaser scope?

When it worked it was excellent, but it spent far more time being in for service than on my rifle. First time was debris on lens (interior), second time was leak (they gave me a new scope). So I switched to Kahles, and no issues. Military scopes tend to be very reliable, but also very heavy. I´m trying to get away from heavy.

So... is that just a regular, molle type split chest rig you're using there? And you still carry a pack on top of it? Also, glassing pad attached to the belt? Maybe you can do a quick video sometime of how you organise that pack system and go over your gear (briefly)... I'd definitely watch that.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Make sure to cut a concave line on your glassing pad (down to top of rear pocket). If not, the pad will just lift the jacket and disturb your layering. You're simply going to be a better hunter if you can sit down anywhere and glass whatever/whenever without hesitating due wet/cold ground. When you glass standing up/unsupported you lose a lot of information.

There's a certain irony in the story about the broken stock. After the passage filmed (the steep chasm), I stopped to stop the camera and that's when I slipped. Smack on my bum and the full force of my body pounding the stock into the ground. Of course it broke! Thankfully I already have a replacement stock in hand (dimensions which was 3D scanned and improved by Blaser from the stock you saw in this film). That stock is off for bedding and reinforcement now, hopefully it will not end up as firewood.

Hi Thomas, thanks for sharing the mistakes you made. It's difficult to learn something from KZbin content where everything goes well every single time. :) I'm saving up for a K95. I was dead set on a wooden stocked version, but I'm unfortunately a clumby oaf that will trip over my own shadow. So this makes me wonder about my stock choice. Do you think the Ultimate stock whould have faired better?

The plastic stock? Yes, I am pretty sure it would have handled the fall no problem. This crack opened up along an already existing hairline in the wood. When I look at how much abuse my Gunwerks Clymr stock has received from me falling on skis (many times the force of this fall and several times) I have no reservations against the synthetic other than looks. My R93 and later R8 professional/ Ultimate has never had any issues either and they have been used harder than the K95. But I didn´t want that in a K95 and I have accepted that wood is weaker. Not sure if this was a financially wise decision, but I quite enjoy the look and feel of wood.

It's a lovely cartridge, strikes a nice balance between recoil and knockdown. I reload and use 120-130gr bullets over Vit N560 powder, simply because that powder works extremely well with my Barnes 120gr TTSX bullets. For targets Lapua120gr Scenar and for lead bullet Hornady 123gr ELD M.

I´m absolutely infatuated with chamois hunting, to the degree that I have made lifestyle changes in hopes of getting a few more years on the mountains. It has had a surprisingly positive effect on my life. The replacement stockis already in hand and sent off for bedding and reinforcement. Hopefully I will not make firewood of that one, as I will not financially recover from another breakdown.

I am sure that has nooooothing to do with me, I am an eeeeexpert (insert embarrased and ironic smiley). I must say I really enjoy gamsjagd, but my big handicap is that I only see gams on these trips. I@ve bought the literature and the croatian trip was the first time I really saw immediately what type of animal I had in front of me (close range) and this trip was the first where the spotting scope wasnt just guessing. I´ll never match Lukas or Hannes for skill, precision or speed on the finer points, but at least I can now select an animal in the correct class. I don´t expect to progress beyond this.

Waidmannsdank! For the very simple reason that I´ve wanted to own a K95 since I was young but only recently could afford one (and even at that, secondhand). I have no real experience with laminates, never saw any benefits over a synthetic stock.

R8 is a precision machine. The K95 doesn’t stand back however. And it’s much more beautiful. I wouldn’t trade mine for an R8. With a bit of training I can fire two rounds within 8 seconds. But it’s usually the 1st shot that counts.

Excellent, Weidmannsheil! A few things: I am stunned at your two missed shots, but that's hunting. It happens. After the third shot you said, that you were out of ammo. I have made that mistake before and it didn't bite me then, but it nearly did. Always bring enough ammo, even if you are planning on only taking one shot. As always thank you for showing us your mistakes, that way we all can learn and become better. So you have finally beaten the K95's stock down. It was only a matter of time, wasn't it ;) Regarding the K95: I have one that looks very similar to yours and it shoots incredibly well, but I am bound to sell it, because it is chambered in .30-06 and is not really suited for night time varmint hunting. Then I thought: I need to replace the barrel with a nice 6,5mm cartridge. What happened to your 6,5x57R barrel and where can I get it? :D

It´s safe to say that was not my proudest moment; but the value of the teaching example is high and absolutely worth the personal abuse I will receive for publishing it. I normally have more ammunition, but sleep deprivation and poor packing distorted plan somewhat: When I put my hand in the pocket, I found a battery instead of a cartridge, My K95 is wonderful, but it doesn´t shoot AAA. I have had the 6,5x57R barrel shortened and silenced now, but I have only one suitable scope so from convenience I´ve been using the x55 barrel all season. Please check ammunition availability before comitting to a 6,5mm barrel, I had a very hard time getting brass for my x57R (6 months) and had to buy very expensive RWS ammuition (which also delivered horrible precision in my barrel). In terms of price and availability, Creedmoor or x55 might be a smarter choice. But despite this and the lack of use, I really like my x57R, it just feels «right» for a kipplauf. I will also recommend 6XC if you are a reloader and happy with 6mm; noticably lower recoil, top precision and I cannot tell the difference in the animal reaction (up to small red deer)

@@THLR Thanks for the reply. Well, that's hunting, mishaps happen... Availability of various x57R cartridges is not the problem here in Germany. I have a 6,5 Creedmoor barrel for my R8 and it shoots great, but I like rimmed cartridges better in Kipplaufwaffen. 6XC is a neat little cartridge, much like 6,5CM, but my laws state that I must have at least 6,5mm bullet diameter and min. 2.000 Joule at 100m in order to be legally used on "Hochwild" i.e. boar, red deer etc. This rules out many good cartridges like 243 Win, 6XC etc. Also our traditional European hunting cartridges like 6,5x57; 6,5x55 or 7x57 have been wiped out by 30-06 or nowadays 308 Win. And to be honest, .308 Win is the best compromise for what I am really doing out in the field. But it is just so... boring.

Im not being picky its that every thing i have learnt from you is about position posture being behind the rifle and in the best position to fire a shot and if you miss as we all do from time to time with that Blaser you cocking over and sometime not in a ideal position to break that rifle to reload it looks so awkward sometimes that would throw me off. and for all the promotion of that Blaser you would think they would offer to mold you the stock you want now that you you have fitted it to yourself😉😜

Oooof, I don´t want to go there. One morning I was standing still and staring at my backpack for so long that Lukas asked if something was wrong. Mentally I was battling wether or not to lighten the pack or bring all the gear. Thankfully I brought all the gear and captured the images I wanted. Base weight is 19 kgs, 21 if I carry water for a warm day. The vast majority of this weight is camera equipment, the big camera setup is 6kgs alone. Without the camera gear it would be much, much lighter. For example, my backpack is 3,2 kgs empty. Without the special need from the tripods, I would have used a Berghaus FLT backpack at 1,2kgs. Relevant hunting equipment is: Shell jacket/pant. Wool hat, mittens, insulation jacket 0.5kg. Knife, ziplocks and hygiene kit. Two flashlights 3-400 lumen, one rechargable and one AAA lithium batteries. Spare AAA lithium batteries 1-2 liters of water. Bivvy bag Jerven/Ortovox/300L trash bag, depending on weather. Foam pad for sitting. Electrolyte tablets. Possibly dark chocolate. Possibly a piece of meat. Possibly nuts. 3+8 cartridges. Extra work gloves, cheap garden type. 2 alpine slings 120cm, carabiner. Possibly crampons.

Pooh 19 kg plus gun plus carrying a bagged chamois😅 this is tough 😅 I crossed the Alps on foot several times and my complete equipment incl. backpack is 8 kg. My alpine hunting gear would range between 8-12 kg depending on whether I’d go up and stay in a cabin overnight or had day stalks only.

@@Fuxjaga it makes sense, I suspect I would be at something like that myself! I´m occasionally browsing ultralightbackpacking.co.uk and looking at their selection with water in my eyes. The weight is currently my biggest motivation obstacle and it would be nice to have a hunt where every step isn´t a struggle. I had one such hunt this autumn, and it was just nice to be present and enjoy the scenery. One day the body will say no and I will simply stop filming.

It is called "the last bite" and it is a tradition of respect.

Not just Austria. Germany does it, as do we here in Switzerland. It's the "last bite" for the animal for those who don't know. It's to honor the animal and it's sacrifice. The hunter is supposed to get a twig too and should stick it to his hat. It's also customary to honor deceased hunters (at the funeral) with a twig on their grave. If you're really strict, there's specific species of trees that you're supposed to use but depends a bit on what is available on site obv. Where I am in Switzerland you can definitely ruffle some feathes if you don't do this. You're not going to get punched up, but you won't get any sympathy points thats for sure.

What the brand of your jacket ? What the name of the place here you hunted ?

Depends on what jacket you are referring to. The brown insulated one is a military no-name, I like it because I´ll shed no tears when it dies. The green one is a home-made running shirt, the only property it has is cutting the wind (not windproof, only wind resistant) and you´ll find better running jackets in Rab Vital. The camo one is Blaser Venture which I have modified (added lenght) as the original did not cover my waist properly. This jacket has been so good (lightweight, packable, silent, sufficiently weather resistant) with properly chaped collar and arms, so it was worth the DIY investment to improve it. Unlike my Arcteryx Beta, I do not have to choose between ventilating and getting my chest wet in rain, as the collar is properly shaped and will let heat escape. It is also more quiet and appears stronger, but when the forecast is pissing rain I will reach for a goretex pro jacket. Location? Near Ebensee, Austria. Øbf has info on their webpage.

Mange takkl håper du ikke fryser ihjel! Jakken er Blaser Venture som jeg har modifisert ved å sy på ekstra lengde ved hoften. Denn har et veldig godt balansepunkt på styrke/vekt/pakkbarhet/lydnivå. Den er merkbart sterkere enn mine tilsvarende lettvektsklær fra Bergans/Arcteryx og krage/hette er bedre. På min Arcteryx jakke må jeg velge om jeg vil ventilere ut varme eller bli våt på brystet fra regn. Blaserjakken har et vesentlig bedre snitt her og jeg kan gå med lukket jakke og slippe ut varme opp rundt halsen samtidig som den er høy nok til beskytte. En god allroundjakke, men størrelsene er litt «Kina» så du må prøve fysisk for at det skal bli rett. Men om regnet pisser ned så velger jeg helt klart en goretex pro jakke.

It was a predicted accident. I will try once more with a wooden stock (already have the replacement) and if I break that one too, I will have a carbon one made. I have very little knowledge about wood, but have been told the replacement has a good balance between beauty and strenght (i´m a fan of straight mineral lines). I also decided it was easier to just put aside money rather than pay an insurance premium, so already saving up for the next failure. All the best for 2024!

They are ok for dry weather, but soaks water and can't really take work without disintegrating. You'll find Granqvist M1009 desert combat glove far superior in that regard. The green gloves I use huning is Arcteryx Venta, I bought those online from the Arcteryx Outlet. Fully windproof, not at all waterproof and probably the best glove I've worn when you need weatherprotection but at the same time you will be sweating from hard work (a membrane glove will just give you sweaty hands and you'll be terribly cold once stopping). I just pull Black Diamond shell mittens over these if I need waterproofing and add Devold Nansen wool mitt for insulation - that will see me toasty at any temperature. If you just want to protect your hands from heather and forest, do not underestimate the 2 euro garden glove with rubberized palm. It will offer reasonable protection from cuts, stop dirt being pounded into your skin, it will arrest rain water long enough so you're not constantly reheating and they are cheap enough to carry 2 pairs. I have stopped buying expensive gloves as they wear out/puncture every season and none offer the heat a mitten will.

The second one was really old, probably the oldest you shot so far 😉. Sorry about the stock! Plastic stock on a K95 is not nice, carbon would be acceptable 😉😁. I changed my R8 stock with a raveneuro stock this year. Not because of the weight, but it's even more durable than my plastic 😂

I´ve held a few Raven stocks, they have a nice shape! I´ve been offered to have a K95 stock made with the same procedure, but so far had to decline for lack of money. The guy who offered to make mine told me I should expect a strenght similar to quality aluminium. Not at all worried about the stock, it was always intended as an interim and I already have the replacement in hand.

@@THLR agree with the strength. My stock felt from a rock last year on dolomite stone, which has lots of edges, I thought it would be full of scratches but couldn't find a single one.

Hanging all that stuff off of a light rifle kind of defeats the whole purpose. Stock breakage does happen. The 6.5 x 55 is a favorite of mine. I have hunted mostly whitetails since my retirement. Where I hunt, it's a bit much, but it does work and works well. Those Chamois are not very big, I would think a 243 or even a 223 would be plenty. I wanted one of those K-95s for quite some time. I do have a Blaser R-93, that I had for more than 23 years now. It's a 7mm RM, a bit much for whitetails at 50 long steps. It's an interesting, physically challenging hunt, to be sure.

I heartily agree! A clean K95 with a slim scope is a very nice gun and really how I would like to use it. I tried this approach with my 6,5x57R barrel, but you could really tell how negatively the dogs were affected so in order not to be anti-social I added the silencer. The camera is a big lump I really wish I could do without, but then again… I need it to show exactly how I aim and shoot and what effect this has on the animal. Legal restrictions most places puts the caliber at 243 or bigger, some local regulations further restricting this to 6,5mm. At 45-70 lbs they fall just fine to a 6mm (which I have used), but local supply situation makes almost anything but 6.5mm twice as expensive and difficult to reliably get. The R93 is difficult to improve on, I used to own one and the only reason I traded up for the R8 was that I expected barrel supply to dwindle. Absolutely loved that rifle, never had an issue with it! I see things through the eyes of an American and our 2nd Amendment Gun Rights. Here in the States, 243s are more available than 6.5 x 55. While we can buy almost any kind of firearm we want , the suppressor is an NFA item; there are a lot of hoops you have to do to buy one. The Hearing Protection Act would remove those from the NFA, but there were not enough votes in the Senate. Donald Trump would have signed it if it passed. Biden nope. Cameras are well-needed when you make hunting videos. The one thing I would like that is not legal in the States is the use of tracking dogs after the shot. Thanks for the reply. NFA is the National Firearms Act of 1934. Its so unconstitutional, but nobody has challenged it in court. @@THLR

It is a discrepancy that silencers are not available over-the-counter. It is has massive benefits to the overall population. Fingers crossed it will be easier in the future (which is the way it is currently moving in Europe). I wish 243 was legal for more hunts here, I have a sweetspot for the cartridge but have only used it for one season.

Well, there is both fact and speculation here. Fact is that I didn´t hit the animal on two shots despite short range and despite breaking the trigger on the correct spot. Revealed by the recoil impulse is also the fact that I do not have a proper shooting position. So definitively no natural point of aim applied, that changes the recoil impulse to what you saw on the third shot. That is the easy stuff. If we switch to deeper learning and decision psychology, my comment after shot number 2 («… is he not hit?…») comes from genuine surprise because I break the trigger correctly on a short-range, broadside shot without hitting the animal. This is also a clear indication that I´m working in system 1 mode and can be considered a fact. System 1 has the strenght of speed and automation, but it is also decisions built on glimpses and there will be no warning flags to indicate something is off. Furthermore we likely have amygdala highjack, a much simplified explanation is that your reptile brain reaches for the end solution and skips all intermediate steps. This is an evolutionary trait which over time has been beneficial to the survuval of the species; mostly good (for example downhill skiing) but also not very good for tech and drills. Europe has lost several fighter aircrafts due these two phenomenas, I say fighter airplanes as these accidents always trigger extensive investigations with expert comments and despite the best selection and safety systems you are unable to avoid it. You find similar in many traffic accidents, but without the same level of investigation. So this is not a fact, but highly probably. And from this I can derive my speculation: Lack of natural point of aim alone is not sufficient to cause the misses. On shot number 2 Lukas observed the shot strike low and right. A possible cause of this is shoulder and elbow movement in the firing arm, but system 1 makes it impossible to conclude this as a fact. Sorry, long winded and interesting for only for very few people.

I think we both agree that a clean shot is needed and that the film shows a mistake. So the emotional response is of course very good, you have reflected on the hunting and have no wish to do the same. For the factual part there is plenty obstacle clearance for the bullet (you just need to know your trajectory), the body of the gams is not moving in any significant fashion (sub 0,2 sec flight time) but all of this is of course pointless. Due to the amygdala highjack/system 1 which causes me to skip the steps of basic marksmanship. The «is he not hit?» comment is the biggest identifier of the system 1 lock, as there is no warnings or red flags attached when the brain works in system 1. I am very open and factual about my mistakes, and the learning effect will be bigger than the personal cost of the exposure. I wish you all the best for the upcoming season!

Hopeless for hunting in weather, wind, bush and trees. 6,5 bullets have 130 years of bad reputation for bad thermal performance. It would have been interesting to see what cartridges would have dominated Norway if the 6,5x55 hadn´t «financially excelled» due the DFS system. 270 and 7mm´s would probably have been a lot stronger in this market, I for sure would have been shooting 7mm. Probably two, one «normal» and one «fast» for the heaviest bullets. As it is, the wallet tells me to shoot 6,5.

@@THLR 308 win with 50 cm barrel will shoot a 139 grain RWS EVOLUTION GREEN SHORT RIFLE 900+ mps. There is a reason 308 win is no one sold rifle caliber.I was hunting in many countries for many years with 6.5x55. It was fine in boiling sun in Africa, not so good in cold weather up north. 6.5x55 started up with 1:7 twist rate after target shooters destroyed the round as hunting round, by fucking up the twist rate.
