In my experience most shooters really don´t know their chokes and their limitations. Having been shooting competitively for 20 years or so I can count on my fingers the number of shooters that check patterns with different chokes and cartridges

And to expand on that, how many shooters are using way too much constriction. It’s truly amazing how far out .005” and .010” chokes with break targets out to 50yds with authority

I use light mod chokes (3/8 to English fellows) in both barrels. I have started to use #9 shot shells on closer targets even rabbits with success. I also use shells designed to be spreader type in #8 shot. This works well too. I would only change chokes for 50 + yards and use Mod or tighter with #7-1/2 shot. This may seem harder to think about but I find it easier. The TGS video about The PRO ONE Challenge started me using #9. Jonny discussed it with Josh on the video. Good video too.

I'm usually doing the same. Rather than change from my LM (U2) for close in I will go to a spreader or 9's. Past 50 I go to mod/imod (U3) and 7 1/2.

I shoot DTL every week and local comps here in France as well during the summer months. I win lots. I have an old Browning Ultra XTR with fixed 3/4 & full chokes. One of my co shooters every week has a 725 Pro or similar and he is constantly changing chokes and faffing about and generally giving himself issues and bad results. He claims he wants to be able to hit the clays with the tightest chokes possible. I have told him over and over that the name of the game is to hit the clays and making it more difficult for yourself is just stupid.

That’s very interesting that. I would never thought of choosing that choke. I’ve always shot close-up 1/4 with a fibre ward. I have to give that a go 👍 That great content as always TGS 👏

Years ago, I got it in my head to train with a tighter choke than I'm comfortable with, then swap them out when I need to make hits. Is there any merits to this? Love the trousers Ed! Don't let the fudd's comments get you down.

Lots of people say you should never change chokes in sporting, but I think sticking to 3/8 or 1/2 for the most part is good and changing chokes for really close or really far is beneficial. It gives me more confidence to know I have the right tool for the job and I shoot more instinctively and worry less about missing because of a bad pattern for the target at hand

Don't know what it is on 1/8s or whatever but i run a improved cylinder (.010) in the bottom and light mod (.015) in the top. Been happy with it. Haven't felt the need to go tighter for distance. Works for the close targets. Besides the club i go to its got a lot more far targets than close.

Bottom line is if it gives you confidence then do it. At the end of the day it’s your scorecard that you’re turning in. Same with shot size , if you’re within skeet range shoot #9’s at the target, 55 yard crosser shoot #7 1/2’s at it.

Nah I'm with George on this one anything less than 10 meters I doesn't matter even if you had a blunderbus there is not enough time from pulling the trigger to hitting the clay for the shot cloud to expand. As beautifully demonstrated by yourselves by vaporising both orange clays with vastly different chokes

Great info,if possible a comparison between steel,lead or bismuth and other materials and also what chokes does Mr. Ed uses with the different cartridges. Here at the range in Belgium only steel cartridges and for gamebirds non toxic cartridges

I use 3/8 in both barrels and carry some Pro Pistons for close up stuff. Would that have the same effect as changing to cylinder?? Just a thought

I have been toing and froing on what chokes in my sxs for months now. Its full:full and I do OK. Simon recommends 3/8:5/8 but is 5/8 too tight for standard steel? Everyone seems to be saying 1/2 minimum. Love the video as always.

@ the thing also, as I hit more i started to relax and switched from a pre mount to just under the pocket and waited. It was a real turning point for me, I actually started to have fun and I was seeing it big. The problem is I am now looking for a beretta classic 30 inch barrel skeet gun. Pretty rare. Cheers!

I think when you shoot a round of clays you need to define your goals. Is your goal to beat your buddy next weekend? Is it to get the highest score you can on that day? Or is it to get better? If it’s to get better, I believe you should be taking the shot where and how you aren’t comfortable. That’s how you improve in the long term. If you are hitting ten straight, you aren’t improving. But like I said, that depends on your short and long term goals and naturally, your competence level. 👍🏼

It’s a scale of 1/8ths. Full choke equals 1 (or 8/8ths) and nominal full is .040”. The 3/8ths they mention is .015”. In the USA that is light-modified.

I've been using Jimmy's "decoy" choke for pretty much everything lately. Very consistent with my informal sporting clay sessions. Believe it's close to a light mid or 3/8.
