That engine building competition was similar to the ones they used to have at the Brisbane Motorshow and other shows back in the 80's. With those competions they used the old Ford v4 engine. The engine was completely torn down to a bare block. They had to assemble the motor completely, install and set the distributor and fit the fuel pump and carburetor and actually make it start and run. It was always great to watch.

yea, we had 250 fords & 202 holdens out west. from memory they had to run a minimum of 20 sec but they had no oil or sumps. I was actually thinking of the exact same comps as you while watching this. #motorvation94 #westozlads #auspride

Ha We had that at tafe (trade school) Old Mazda 4cyl Deisels Fully disassemble them clean check clearances and reassemble Not propose to be a race but it was of course Putting grease in the oil pump and no oil on the bores or rings so it builds oil pressure super quick and doesn't smoke at all on startup Because looking good was better than doing it right haha

Older Smart cars shift poorly because it’s a manual transmission with what is essentially a giant solenoid mounted to it to shift the gears, but are an automatic for the driver. Basically they are an automated manual transmission. They have a clutch internally, not a torque converter like automatics.
