A little video about common Ls intake manifold modifications and why I personally do or dont condone them and why. Demonstrated while installing my LS6 intake manifold.
GM TSB #02-06-04-023 addresses the silicon dam around the rear knock sensor to prevent corrosion prominent in vehicles where consumers used high pressure water to wash the engine bays.
Again an example of having to create a secondary solution to a problem that common sense would have prevented. 🤦‍♂️

Excellent video. Thank you so much! As an engineer by trade and a mechanic hobbyist, this is spot on! I just yanked my LS1 intake off of my `99 yesterday due to some oil leaks behind it and we think a lot alike! I used electrical tape to hold the rear bolts up so I could wiggle it out. I didn't know what the foam pads were for but I knew that GM engineers put them there for a reason, so I replaced them.

Good to hear these tips! I took the foam off of my intake a year ago while replacing my knock sensor. I think I’ll put new foam back in along with insulation, and a ram air intake

I’m glad you mentioned the purpose of the hot coolant running through the throttle body, that definitely is very important to keep here up north😁 screwing with a frozen throttle plate in 0 degree weather is just no fun

Wow, great advise on LS motors, and "lube" jokes.............subscribed!!!! I am guilty of removing the foam on my dads LQ4, I need to be verbally thrashed. It was pretty nasty so i ripped it off, did not plan on replacing it. Never though about it sealing off the knock sensors. I have stated before to people regarding modern engines, most of the engineers at the auto companies are not stupid. They may have to trade off some things in the name of built cost, ease of assembly, noise, smoothness etc. These compromises are where you could improve on the factory, most other things it is more difficult to outsmart the engineers. Especially newer engines, they are highly developed, made off of many decades of past experience. Much harder to improve upon than and engine from 5 decades ago. great video.

Good video. I stress as you did, you can save money on some things, but don't reuse the damned gaskets or cheap out on good essentials (fluids, etc) and they don't give you extra parts for nothing. Engineers with years of education, training, and hard field evidence put those parts in the box for a reason (pads are a good example). Great video. I've not heard people cutting them out. See them put air dry exopy in some of the squares for extra support and for heat. But they always put the pad back on. Mostly running high boost to keep them from flexing and cracking. On some engines catch can are great for helping the inside intake stay cleaner.

You’ll love the 6.0 is there. Especially if you’re coming from the original 305 or 350 smogger engine. Literally double the power and almost double the fuel economy. 👍🏻

Same with my 04 GTO “LS1” lol it’s a complete LS6 minus heads and cam. The intake the block the bottom end etc. pretty dope def yielded more power than advertised LS1 power.

Looking at a 4" crank (383) redux ITB's, port polish the heads. Very much thinking of getting 862 heads for the smaller intake valve, high port velocity

I would recommend to any LS owner as with most Ford and Dodge owners to run a single or dual catch can. It will help prevent a lot of engine issues, spark plug issues, O2 sensor issues, carbon/oil buildup issues, etc...

A catch cans never a bad idea. Especially in a boosted application or when running excessive ring gap for large shots of nitrous. The oil vapors dont really effect your sparkplugs or O2 sensors as its instantly burnt during combustion, but the catchcan will definitely help with buildup in the intake, intake ports, and on the backside of the intake valves.

@@BadLuckGarage I have to disagree about the oil not affecting your spark plugs or O2 sensors because it has been proven that the unburned oil does in fact foul spark plugs and O2 sensors. Thus also leads to a lot of carbon buildup. But nevertheless a catch can or two should always be used in most applications especially performance wise. Seems it would have been a great addition from the factory, but none of them can seem to get it right yet. Lol

Brother I cant speak for Dodge or Ford engine design because I dont work with them but the spark plugs in these engines go well over 100k miles unfouled without a catchcan. Matter of fact the original plugs are often left unchanged by most owners for well past that out of pure negligence. Same with the O2 sensors. Once again, yes, a Catchcan helps with carbon and sludge deposits. But your sparkplugs and O2 sensors will be fine without. I have yet to see an oil fouled plug in an LS engine from not running a catchcan. Thats why they aren't factory installed. I'm not arguing that running one isn't beneficial, just not in the way you seem to think it is. But you're free to have your own opinion here and regardless of the reason you personally chose to install them, they're definitely a good idea. 👍

The reflection matting will lower intake temps about 15 degrees on a street/strip car and around 25 degrees between passes on a track motor. We tested this with a IAT sensor mounted in a stock truck intake between cylinders 5/7 just bc that was the easiest place to drill/mount...

@@BadLuckGarage We put it under the intake on a 02 Silverado LM7 with factory 706 heads that had mild porting. Truck had a BTR Truck cam... cant remember which one?.?. Long tubes, 3.73's and a 2800 stall. We were just curious to what it would do so we tried it. Noticed about a 13-18 degree diff on 95 degree days in town traffic and 22-28 at the track on 1/8th mile passes with about 30 min between. Far as 50 mile road trips at 75 mph... maybe 5 degrees. Probably useless for a DD but street/strip car I could see it helping a little. Dont know if it would even be noticable on a turbo car though.

Yep, perfect example and that’s the whole reason they had to start using the silicone. Lol. I always take care not to focus the water spray at the bottom of the intake and as long as your mindful of that and the foam seals are in a good state of repair it will be fine. But if you spray water directly at them it WILL get through.....especially if they’re old and deteriorated. GM realized that most consumers wouldn’t know better so that’s why they had to come up with the whole silicon damn thing. There was never anything wrong with the original design under normal circumstances but it was us, the consumers who were creating the problem.

l agree totally on the lube comment. Also if they don't have oil sitting around and their doing modifications to the block they may want the Vaseline for when they drop something down the crankcase. That way it hurts less when it has em sticking a leg out on the hwy trying to get a ride since they don't have a way to replace the oil lol.

Hey there... I have a 98 formula, it has the LS1 with the EGR tube that goes into the top near the throttle body and I've seen some info about chopping the tube short to free up some flow...? What are your thoughts about this mod?

No clue brother. I never try to modify the egr system. I usually just buy a $10 block-off kit, take all the egr crap off the engine, and disable all the codes in the tune. Of course depending on what state you live in that may not be an option for you. I’m that case I would just look at it like this....the small disruption in airflow from the protrusion of that line probably isn’t going to hurt as much as the egr system itself is powerwise. If it doesn’t look like it’s going to hurt anything and you just want to tinker with something then I say go for it. Lol.

They get oil in the intake easy because the PCV valve exit at the top of the valve cover has oil splashing up off lifters and it's vacuumed to the throttle body go to open the throttle body out and sucks oil right from the PCV valve to the throttle body

You’re partially right. It does draw oil vapor in through the PCV but not from rocket arm splash( which is what I believe you’re referring to since the lifters are actually in the block below the heads). LS valve covers actually have a baffle directly under the PCV nipple that prevents the splash, but you’re still going to draw oil particles in regardless. That’s just the nature of the PCV system and the reason a catch can with a good air separator setup is always a good idea on ANY vehicle.

I’ve actually been looking at those brother. I was actually thinking about an eBay intake as well but future plans for this build would make spending money on an intake manifold a poor decision. After the eBay build is finished.....intakes aren’t going to be an issue for phase2. 😈

Yeah I have tinkered with a few of those Dorman intakes and I'm very impressed for the price. They are a bonded two-piece intake. But it doesn't take much to separate the two. There's quite a few areas to be ported and improved upon. The lower half of the Dorman intake bears a part number that is shared with the 90 mm fast intake lower. So it appears as though Dorman bought lower intake manifold mold from fast I guess. And the upper half of the Dorman intake manifold is like a much bigger LS6 design. All this team with a 90 millimeter opening makes it a great Buy.

The main point of what I was trying to get across was somehow Dorman ended up with a fast product. 90 millimeter fast intake was out a long time years before the Dorman 90 mm intake came around. I didn't really give a lot of thought as to who was buying from who. My mind was on performance and price and product. Throw that adapter away and put your stock throttle body back on. It’s pointless to buy a larger throttle body when the opening of your intake is still stock.

I don't see any bad advice here. I replaced a lot of knock sensors on C5 Corvettes due to water intrusion 20 years ago. I left the GM dealership in 2001 and honestly I do not remember if they had the foam on the intake at that time or not, but every time I replaced them I put Ultra Black on the rubber caps to seal them up. I had the intake off my 99 Camaro at 40k miles and they were clean. I think the Corvette guys washed the engine bay more than most at the car wash. Camaro did not have any foam.

So I can’t really see an application I would use it on when I could just get a NBSS intake used for 1/3 the price. Now if I was building something that have minimum hood clearance, then I would maybe go that direction.

The LS1 intake is the absolute worst intake power wise. You can fit a truck intake under the hood of a nova. But if you're worried about looks as well as power and dont want to spend a grand on a FAST then the Dorman intake would be the best way for you to go. your cam isn't really going to be a factor when selecting an intake unless you're running a huge cam thats gonna have you revving to 7500+ rpms. Intake case you could start looking at sheetmetal or holley high ram intakes.

Hi, I am getting ready to add a GPI Ported with Rod Mod OEM LS3 manifold onto my 2014 Camaro with the LS3, I am going to add the heat shield as well but does my car come with the foam pads? If so should I put them back on and on top of the heat shield I am adding? From what I am reading I don't believe the Camaro LS3 comes with the foam. Do I want to put O Ring lube or something on teh intake gaskets? Thank you

The LS3 is a gen4 engine. The knock sensors are on the side of the engine block, not under the intake manifold so a water intrusion isn’t an issue.

An LS6 would be about the only factory style intake upgrade that you could fit under the hood of your GTO but it’s very doubtful you’ll find one in the junkyard brother. The NNBS Truck intakes are the best flowing factory cathedral style intakes but again, you’re not going to fit that under the hood of your GTO.

I have a 6.2 ls I put on my airboat I installed the fitech 70011 intake kit with the fitech 50019 intake fuel pump.the trouble I'm having is after I run about a half day and come from cruise to a idle then step back on the throttle the fuel pressure will drop to all most zero with the throttle pushed and back to 58 psi at idle until I shut the engine off and restart it sometimes get the pressure to stay up and off we go .I have replaced the fuel pump under wty and the fuel regulator once that is what fitech said to I'm at witts end. Anybody have any idels??¿??

What’s the fuel tank setup? Sounds like possibly fuel slosh or aeration uncovering the pickup.

Got to add one more thing. This guy did a good job cleaning everything before being reassembled. Can’t count the number of videos where guys put back on some of the most nasty looking stuff. It just looks bad and possibly works bad. It’s a sign of a sloppy mechanic.

The heat insulation thing sounds good, but wasted money. The air passes through so fast, it doesn't suck any added heat when passing through the intake. Concentrate on getting cooler air before it gets to the intake.

Probably is. Try using carb cleaner on your screen. If that doesn’t work then try sandpaper.

Back when I was building Small Block engines, everybody said to put 2 beads of sillycone on the ends of the block to seal the intake to the block, Well, never had the money for the sillycone for the intake to block and always ended up using the oem seals. Guess what, never leaked oil, LOL.Never.

Yea when it comes to small block Chevys you can do either or but if you do both it’s gonna leak for sure. I’ve done it both ways and never really had issues with either.

Good tips but I’m going to say if the foam was such a good idea then why does the knock sensor still fill up with water I’ve been messing with these engines for years I’ve found pulling the foam helps moisture to escape I always replace knock sensor harness and RTV the grommets in its not let me down since engineers fail in the real world

Since there are no “natural” water sources about the level of the valley cover, there are really only 2 ways for water to be introduced into the knock sensor reliefs. High pressure water being sprayed directly at or under the intake, and submersion such as flooding or off-roading. GM realized after so many failures that the end user was causing these issues and that was the reason for the TSB to start using rtv “damns” around the knock sensors that I mentioned in the video description. “Customers washing engine with pressurized water” is actually listed as the reason for that TSB. After the TSB was released, people started simply removing the foam seals as well using the logic that they were no longer needed since they were now sealing the knock sensors with rtv. This is technically true, but again, it would also be unnecessary if people would just use common sense and not spray high pressure water at the foam seals in the first place. This is why I used it specifically as an example in the video of people having to come up with solutions after causing a problem.

Well it sounds like you’ve already done everything I have planned anyway except for brake upgrade and rear suspension upgrades. I’m primarily trying to make mine a little more tow-friendly when I’m pulling the other cars to the track. The self leveling suspension does NOT like the weight of the cars on the car hauler at all.

How about KY jelly? Works great in the bedroom? Guess not it’s water based. Don’t cheap out on seals and gaskets guys and gals. Not worth it. And gasket sealer? Well did the manufacturer use it? If not then don’t use it. I’m not saying that the manufacturer always gets everything right but they spent millions of dollars to test this stuff and Joe Bob down at the trailer park doesn’t know WTF he’s talking about. And why would anyone remove the ribs off of the bottom of the intake? It’s not on the inside affecting air flow and it doesn’t weigh anything, leave it alone.

Nothing wrong with a little rtv around your knock sensors. Doing my ls swap now and gm techs made that a point to tell me even with the pads they've found crud and water caused corrosion around the holes

I think you missed the point I was trying to get across brother. The point was, as long as you're not doing something you shouldn't be doing to the engine(aka spraying water directly toward the underside of the intake or in truck applications burying your truck in mud), then building the dam out of silicone is completely unnecessary. Under any normal conditions there is no way for water or dirt to get past those foam baffles. GM started having their techs "build the walls" because they recognize that most consumers are idiots and try to do things like powerwash their engines witth high pressure and end up blowing water and contaminants past the seals and into the knock sensor sockets. Don't be one of "those people" and the seals will be all you ever need. 👍 I already clarified this in the video description. That being said, its your engine so if you want to do it then do it. Nothing wrong with being too cautious. 😉
