Mallaby has written a brilliant and clearly written analysis of Greenspan and his talk here is a great synopsis of his book. It is well worth reading as the author chronicles how Greenspan's economic practices as Fed Chairman deviated from his early economic philosophy wedded to Ayn Rand, how he consolidated power, and why he allowed the changes in financial markets to get out of hand. Others here have taken an opportunity to excoriate Greenspan. This talk, and the book itself, is by contrast thoughtful and offers a more nuanced assessment of the man, his strengths and his misjudgments.

The more I learn about this man, the more I'm disgusted with him. What an utter stain on humanity he is. Not only is he as contradicted as the system that he presided over, he essentially hedged himself all the way along with the insider information, all to make a personnel profit when the system inevitably crashed. Some would call this smart, it's just pure individual greed at the expense of the masses who lost their livelihoods because of his actions.
