I got a 1050 display model at HD for 1/2 price 3 weeks ago. All my LSS Mods came in this weekend and today I installed them. Firebox, lid cover, manifold shield ash box grate... seasoning now for the 1st time to prep to cook in a few days. Installing firebox was easy since everything is new. Your demo got me to buy the LSS Mods. Also got a Larger middle rack. My 1st smoker was a little red bullet.... used it weekly and Thanksgiving turkey was done in it for 15 years! Graduated to a 6 burner JennAir($2500 retail... paid $500 scratch'n dent special) . I've rebuilt it 3 times in the past 20 years... still using... wanted to get back into smoking... with the upgrades, the MB1050 should fit the bill..😅😅😅

Awesome video, HNY from Australia! I bought the mods from Luke @ LSS based on this and your advice and instructions made it a breeze. A piece of advice to all tho, make sure the heat shield on the back (facing the smoker) sits OUTSIDE of the hopper when you reinstall, not inside the top lip, or you'll have a very wobbly heat shield that won't screw back in and forces you to do the reinstall job twice! Love your videos mate!

Bought my 1050 a few years ago when they first came out and bought Luke’s fire box and manifold hood. The firebox liner may not rust, but it did bow, inward. Despite the somewhat unsightly appearance on the inside of the hopper, this bowing has not affected cooking in any way. I suppose there’s no way to get around dealing with that heat. The hopper lid liner looks nice, but I don’t see how that is going to stop the creosote collection under the lid. Unfortunately, I think this is the trade-off of cooking with charcoal and I’m willing to live with that. The manifold hood helps with the cleaning process because I can scrape off grease from it rather than the manifold, but I still had the problem of grease dripping down into the bottom of the grill causing grease fires. What he didn’t have two years ago were the holders to sit a drip pan or pans under the grates. Now this will be a game changer to battle grease fires! Another upgrade I haven’t heard you talk about is a higher grade temperature probe on the door. I like the addition of this probe, but to be honest I don’t look at it that much. I rely on the temperature setting on the controller and my remotes more. I know you have your Blackstone griddle, but Masterbuilt now offers a griddle for these grills. Perhaps you can talk Masterbuilt into providing you one to do a review on it.
@TKCL

The theory on the hopper lid is the gasses that rise cause some sort of reaction with the painted metal and increase rust out or wear. The stainless is supposed to eliminate that. Whether that's true or not, I can tell you that I no longer see any leaking at the lid now, where as before I always seen some smoke exiting.

Glen Smith , Andrew, excellent video. I just purchased my Masterbuilt 800 and knew i need the mods up front, so I just purchased the full kit like you installed and know i am going to love these mods since im installing them before i even use my 800 for the first time. I do feel like they need a mod for the upper chamber where the charcoal is sitting because I noticed your grill had signs of extreme heat as well. It would be sweet to make sure the top end is covered like the bottom end is with the mod. The only negative i can see in the grill itself is the cheaply stamp fire grate. Consumers would be happier if the fire grate was thicker stainless because the factory grate is not going to last as long as it should.. . . your thoughts?
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
Mine is still doing well, they do offer a aftermarket grate I believe. As for the heat in the upper chamber. That's just creasote and not much heat up there. The upper lid seal in the kit helps with that heat as well.

Andrew you really did an awesome review on this. I was looking into getting this smoker/grill, but I did forsee some of these problems, hence what led me to this video. Huge shout out to Luke! @lssmods But as I think about this I'm really disappointed in Masterbuilt for not addressing clients concerns, such as the fire box. This leads me to the conclusion that if they are not concerned about their client's needs then why should I even give them my hard earned money?

The damper has its place. If you plan to cold smoke anything in this smoker, the vent is too large and does not allow the smoke to penetrate the protein in the chamber evenly. I use a smoke tube and DO NOT run the smoker while cold smoking, mainly use it as an enclosed chamber to cold smoke in. The damper does wonders to keep that heavy smoldering smoke in the chamber and get an even cold smoke.
@ShaneZettelmier

Pretty cool. I probably would’ve tried to put foil over the bottom of the grill but this is pretty cool can we can just put a drip pan in which also gives you the option to recover those drippings. Throw some veggies in there or use it for brazing but you keep those drippings for gravy or whatever. Being that the heat box is on the side it’ll be nice if you found foil tray that would just fill the whole thing basically like having a cookie sheet or some thing on there. It might slow your heat exchanger inside but if you keep it closed on a slow cook it shouldn’t matter. The water box option was pretty cool too. These are some pretty cool upgrades.

@@TKCL I was thinking about it last night, instead of having a little feet that you can put a drip pan on I would just make a drip tray with feet kind of like a deeper cookie sheet where you can just remove the grills put the whole thing in and out of there at once without setting up all the little feet and make a grill it just lays on top of it that sits a little lower over the drip tray kind of like they have on the upper grills just lay one on top instead of the big thick grills for your slow briskets and pork butts they’re gonna drip a lot of fat. And when you’re done you can just yank those two pieces out Empty your drip tray and hose it all off. That would be easier than pulling out the foil drip pan and picking up those four little legs because it would just be two pieces. You could also use that as a brazing pan. lol. Great, now I’m hungry 😂
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the feet once installed never have to be touched again, just put a fresh pan on top.
@ShaneZettelmier
@ShaneZettelmier Жыл бұрын
@@TKCL yeah but they’ll probably get moved around and if you pull it out to clean it and you’ve got a pull it out to dump the drip trays. I’m guessing after pulling it in and out he’ll probably slide around a little. I was just thinking if it was all one piece you could just pop it out and dump your drippings and hose the whole thing off and then it only have to clean the bottom if it got past the drip tray. I think the damper might be kind of cool. I was wondering if you put a smoking insulated blanket over the top where the exhaust would come out, the newer pellet smokers in this don’t really have a chimney they just kind of let it go through the back I guess. I’ve also always wondered on these since the charcoal sits above the firebox how does it keep the rest of the charcoal from igniting?
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
Because air can't flow up, I'm assuming lack of flow and oxygen in the hopper just keeps the bottom side of the charcoal lit as air enters the cooking chamber.

I ordered the 'fan protector' slide, and the manifold cover.......... The one thing I also did, was drill a 1/4" hole on the 'hot side' of the manifold. I added a 1" x 1/4" dia bolt, w/ nuts, to raise the 'hot end' of the manifold cover, up 1"......... The channel of the LSS mod, helps liquids flow towards the grease trap.

@TKCL would it be possible for you to measure the distance between the middle rack and the bottom grates for me with the LSS middle rack installed, I've seen videos on the 1050 that look like they have about 6 in of clearance between the bottom grate and the middle and Im wondering if it's the same on the 800.

All great info! I bought the 560 last November and now just pulling it out of storage to fire up. But seeing so many logical mods, it makes me think the unit is a poorly designed product? Tell me I am wrong! I have seen a damper that is a slide type of open and close. That one seems more practical than the damper you show from LSS, have you seen that one?

Ahhh I see, the top plate is factory correct? I had to grind a tiny bit off of the top of mine when I first got my grill. It was barely rubbing and hanging up. They made those dampers a bit too large. The one that came in my kit with holes in it fits fine.

Yes, the manifold mod shown in this video supports a drip pan on top. Between the mod a d the pan it acts as a heat deflector.
