@@teruienages962 How is this objectively wrong in any way? For this to be objectively wrong in the ethical sense, the opposing party would have to have been wronged or injured in some way. In many cases, aside from a minor inconvenience of a conversation, there is no physical, mental, or financial damage done. The material isnt being used, and will likely go to waste, causing damage to those interested in it. And on your point on it being selfish, if its putting material in a public light, how is it selfish? To let interested members of the public enjoy something, rather than let it be kept to a few individuals, who arent profiting in any way from it? It sounds selfless from my perspective. And morally speaking, many cultures have seen themselves prefer to help preserve content for historical purposes (and in the modern context, microcultures from online communities count too). And on your argument of it being about hubris or whatever, who are you to comment on who deserves what? What is YOUR place to comment on what is objective and what is not? You would be right on a legal standpoint, but your arguments aren’t about legality. They’re commenting on the possibility (not definite) of the motives of people, on what they deserve as people. And you call it theft, despite it being made public, and not restricted? How is this depriving the original holders of that material? Theyll have it, but now so can other users. In conclusion, I fail to see the validity in your points. And whats your problem? Who are you to decide the moral and ethical fabric of recovering lost media?

i think its very gatekeep-y to say that finding lost media from data leaks is “cheating” or “not in the spirit of lost media”. the fact of the matter is that disney likely would have never released these things themselves, and this was the only realistic way to find them unless someone who worked on the show miraculously had it. i understand youre operating from the perspective of a content creator, but its still a weird thing to say

completely agreed. like would he rather there was a 4-year long search for something lost, harassing various people connected to a project for any kind of thing they have related to it, being let down various times and believing the case to be cold, only to finally get something from someone only indirectly connected to it? which, unless it was the actual company themselves releasing it (in the case of a cartoon pilot), would still be considered a leak as well? THAT’S his right way of going about it??? such a weird moral high ground to take like 😭 sorry you can’t get ad revenue from a good “leak story” for once

Seems a bit silly to say leaks "aren't in the spirit of lost media", tbh. Most found media are discovered and posts unofficially and unauthorized. Many are technically leaked. If you did get Me and My Friends from someone who worked on it, that would be a leak since they likely aren't the official copyright holder. Cracks (the Sesame Street short) was very likely leaked from someone who had access to it but wasn't the owner or copyright holder. Ripping and posting a VHS tape of a lost Nickelodeon short is illegal copyright infringement. The only way to find media completely legally is to either convince the copyright holder(s) to release it themselves, which we all know by now is not likely, or wait like a hundred years for the work to pass into the public domain and then post it which has some pretty obvious problems if you're searching for anything more recent than the 1930s. Frankly, copyright and trademark law are your enemy if you are a media preservationist/lost media enthusiast. I'm not saying copyright law is 100% bad (as a creator I certainly like parts of it!) but it is what allows works to be locked away indefinitely and archives to be destroyed.

While I don't agree with the point he was making (imo it seemed more focus on telling the story for content over the actual preservation) I can see why leaks wouldn't be ideal, as many companies, especially Disney, even when they're not making money from the IPs in question, they will cling onto that IP and by releasing the pilots without their permission, they can make the claim of it being piracy, which, if they wanted, could result in legal action being taken, which means not only would the content become lost again but, it could result in places like The Internet Archive and any platform with the content on it being sued and depending on how big they are, shut down, resulting in even more things becoming lost again
@Zultzify28 күн бұрын
big disagree on your takes on leaks, unless its actually affecting the profits of the creators/companies by leaking (none of those pilots wouldve) its not hurting anybody and is a net good to have that art out for people to enjoy who are interested. it makes me sad how much stuff like that just sits in company archives and because its not profitable they do nothing with them. hopefully the interest in these leaks changes that view slowly.
@CrashGordon9428 күн бұрын
I'm inclined to agree. The point about the "story" of it kind of gives me the impression that his perspective is a little bit skewed as someone who makes videos talking about this stuff - Getting this stuff dropped in our lap is objectively a win but for the KZbinrs talking about what happened, it's less exciting "material".
@EmoryIllustrated28 күн бұрын
It can hurt the creators and companies in one way. Because these pilots are technically the intellectual properties of the creators, any unlicensed use of copywritten music has the potential of landing them in legal hot water. This is especially a problem when the pilot is tied to a show that has been greenlit.

About the Disney TVA leak of pilots and pitch bibles, it is indeed true that these originated from 4chan, specifically in a thread that was intended to stir up a conversation about Martin & Yolotzin, another leaked Disney TVA thing, but seemingly not connected to the leaks of all the other stuff. Now about the ethics about the leaks and stuff, while I can't deny the practice being seen as icky, I did finally conclude that leaks can be separated into three categories; First, the leaks that share content that never would've been released otherwise, much like that cancelled Popeye movie, and Bremen Musicians from prior years (plus from what I've seen, the involved people that worked on these pilots, like Matt Danner on Shred Force and Mega Mega Whoosh, as well as SF's creator Matt Maiellaro, seem to be pretty chill with it, based simply on the fact that finally people are getting to enjoy what didn't get the chance to be seen). Second, the ambassador's look; Depending on the circumstances, these leaks can be good _and/or_ bad; Sugary Spire for example, the devs only intended for Demo 1 to be the only demo build, so at the same time with its slow development this kinda leaves itself with a bit of playable drought, while two playtest builds from 2023 show how some of the levels after Sugarshack Mines are coming along. Primos also falls under "The Ambassador's Look" and the first one, as the first two episodes did leak in full, and with all their original elements intact, which will not be retained for their proper release. Then the third one is firework-smuggling; I saw a 4chan anon share the behind-the-scenes contents of the Glitch Inn, which were only meant to be for paying customers. I'm pretty sure that's only one that truly counts as just a bad leak.

I don't think leaking is inherently bad. I think intellectual property is a dubious concept at best and I don't really see why you would get that upset about someone leaking the pilot to a show. "It's using someone else's content without their permission!" I mean I guess, but if the missing pilot is just rotting in vault, the artists and the rights holders are earning absolutely nothing off of it anyways. The only time I would agree that leaking is bad is if it is a security risk; leaks sensitive personal material such as nonconsensual nudity, a person's death, or something else the creator is not comfortable sharing; or the leaker uses it for immoral purposes, such as profiting off of it or claiming it as their own work.

This is great year for Lostwave especially. Just a Game, Back to Bed, EKT, and several others being found gives me hope that CIA and TMS can be found, too.

We might've not gotten "Uncle Gus," but we got Uncle Grandpa, who so happens to be friends with a guy named "Mr Gus," so.... coincidence?

EKT is actually still only partially found, not only because of the messy audio, but also the song played in the film fades abruptly, meaning there's likely more to the original master audio not included in the remaster.

Just say the full name Ulterior Motives

EKT being from an adult movie reminds me of Caravan Palace's first work as a bad, which they did for an unreleased French adult movie. The band has said that they probably still have a copy somewhere, but not a lot of people seem interested in raising awareness to get it released

Car Screamer and Mario 64 in the same sentence is wild enough let alone being lost media.
@MichaelRacer28 күн бұрын
Wouldn’t you believe that an entire Ulterior Motives album is being released this year with remastered audio?
@mrrockinboppin70728 күн бұрын
Also what about the original Backrooms photo? That find is up there with The Boondocks pilot and EKT for being the most legendary find of this year.

I disagree about leaks. For me ot doesnt matter how lost media is found, as long as its found. Sure a big search can be interesting to cover on youtube, but if the media is never found then a leak as just as good for people who actually want the media found.

I can't wait to see the yearly recap of stuff that was found in 2024, it's already gearing up to be one of the best years for found media!
@IndieTrashe20 күн бұрын
Honestly I don’t agree with your “cheat code” argument regarding the leaked Disney shows. Just because you didn’t have to take ten+ years searching or harass multiple people to find a lost piece of media doesn’t mean it’s a cheap find.

I’m surprised you didn’t include the back rooms image, but that is somewhat of a gray area to consider it lost media.

Better get used to things being leaked. Its an easy way for a company (or individual) to bypass the otherwise tangled legal status that can often accompany lost media like pilots or banned episodes, even though philosophically the creator agrees with releasing it.

What about the new content we got from the early version of Foodfight? We got new clips of early animation as well as a workprint. That's another significant highlight of this year IMO. Kudos to Ziggy Cashmere for uncovering that.

20:23 it was a remake, not a remaster. The synths, guitars, and vocals were redone. The version Carl92 wanted is still unable to be heard without the background noises or some ai filtering.

Earlier this year 2 of 3 lost episodes the original 1963 Astro boy anime were found! Apologies of you’ve covered this already, if so I haven’t seen that video, but as a big Astro boy fan it’s something I was very excited about.

If old deleted jumpscare videos are considered lost media, I have one. It was a man holding a small dog and trying to get it to say "I love you", but then after a few seconds, a man with a painted face would scream at the viewer. I've been trying to find this video but my guess it's been deleted. r/tipofmytongue was no help, they found another doggy jumpscare video, but it was much longer, much less scary, and lacks the painted face man... On another note, I recreated a lost video myself recently on a channel I operate for myself and a few friends. The original video was called "Hypnotiz'd" and it was a series of sorts that was deleted at some point. I recreated the first one using a reaction video to it as a reference.

I'm hoping more foster bumps get found. There are some I wanna dub as "interview" where this was around the time of its first airing (if I remember correctly). One in particular I remember is where Edwardo is in like a forest or dark setting and the female narrator says something only for Edwardo to go "Who's there?" and the narrator speaks again only for Edwardo to get scared and run off with the narrator saying something about watch foster's on cartoon network I think in a whisper. There were several of these. One was Walt, one was Coco and I think Duchess had one as well, one of the rare promos with her in it. I loved these bumpers since it was the most realistic. It is similar to the style of the ones recently found with "where's bloo".

There was someone in Reddit that says that there was a crossover bumper for the Powerpuff Girls first episode premiere in the UK 1998, and said it had Thomas the Tank Engine in it. I don't know if this is real, but they say that they remembered it and was deleted in KZbin.

I’m never rejoining the lmw server, I did my own research for the breaking bad game, and actually got a lead, believe it was a new one. Contacted them, went well, they said they might have the game(s) in some office in a drive or so. I told the server then staff was like shut up only we can do leads, I get why, since they said that they lost a lead for big star secret or something because people bothered the lead, not sure. If I ever find lost media, it’s a vigilante effort.

Just thought itd be cool to share since i recently found out about it

I can say that the later stages of the hunt for Everyone Knows That had captivated me during a stay in the hospital awaiting a heart transplant. I spent days trying to search and combing through the reddit page, hoping something would turn up. April made 6 months post transplant, and I had just gotten back from visiting my grandparents for the first time in a while. I came back home, sat down, opened reddit, and there it was. Lost my shit. Was and is definitely THE find of the decade.
