@@aaronbummmanbehindthescene4931 Aaron I like to qualify my opinions sometimes, so as a time served toolmaker who worked at Ford Research & Engineering (UK) for 40 years, I am seriously impressed with your work. One thing I will ask is if the side rails can still flex? When I was an apprentice I helped one of the fitters doing a chassis twist test on a fully loaded 20 ton dump truck. There was nothing fancy about it. We jacked up each axle one side at a time so the wheel just cleared the ground, and measured the side rail distance to the floor with a tape measure at a number of points along their length. It surprised me just how much those rails flexed. At one point the jack slipped off the beam axle onto the tie rod, putting a serious bend in it. I thought we were in trouble but the fitter took off the tie rod, straightened it in a big press, and put it back together and said nothing about it. This was 50 years ago and that fitter died years ago. Anyway, I'd like to think that your mods have not created a stiff joint that will focus any bending moments on the weld locations. It's that “The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.” thing.

There was only stretched more Lt. Dan...... your smile !!! 😁😁😁😁 So far, so good you two !!!! This was my first job after leaving school, I worked at a coachbuilders, learned how to weld and cut and assemble and mount various truck bodies, really enjoyed that job until they put me onto vehicle electrics...... Hated it then, they got shot of me and off I went to work on civil engineering sites and got to play with heavy plant and made great money in the process. At the time I was only 18, and only supposed to take home a training allowance, but stuck in and ended up taking home over £300 a week!!!!

You might be concerned with comments about a frame splice like that not being sturdy enough but back in the 90’s one of the locations I delivered propane to in Toronto was DEL Truck Bodies and all the frame stretches I saw in their shop were straight cut stretches. When you have a flat straight frame rail you can line it up like you did. When you have a frame rail like a pick up truck then a notched stretch or shorten works great because you can rely on the cut for alignment when you weld it back together. Back then to drill chassis holes they had a monster drill jig that they chained to the frame rail. Such an improvement now to have mag drills and annular cutters.

I worked at a company in Carthage ms for years we used to cut and roll the center axle and center tandem of trucks weekly anything from F350 fords to quad axle drops, we always made a straight cut and put fishplate on the inside of the frame when we welded it back, also a little helpful tip for the future if you ever do this again weld heavy duty turnbuckles in the inside of the frame to help with tweaking it. Keep up the good work we love the videos
@aaronbummmanbehindthescene49313 жыл бұрын
Yeah Tom I will have to keep that in mind

We have always just used 3”x 3/8”thick angle clamped to the front and rear, top and bottom of both sides (bridge the gap) when cutting chassis to line the old rails and have a place for the new metal to snugly fit in. Everybody does different and usually end with the same results so its fun to watch different methods.....whatever you do that final welds is always where i get massively paranoid of if its moved any way or not.
