My father felt like LT Dan did when he came home, he had his knee cap shot through and was unable to keep going in the army. He felt like his title and everything he was working towards was gone. (he was a good man who struggled) It wasn't till my mother said to him you're still that man. People will always remember you for that. So does your family. That he felt better about himself.

To regain hope after all that Lt Dan went thru, now that's truly a great feeling. I broke my spine at 27, thought my life was over, it was.. But today, i have HOPE again. Agony turns to simple discomfort over the years.... And I won't give up. and that's a feeling I thank God for. " We all have a destiny , nothing just happens " - Lt Dan.

@@botdavid323 : Gosh, how are you and your broken spine now, have you got healing help and managed to help yourself? Was/is your psyche/thinking/ self-esteem OK, I mean , are you good at managing social contacts and get your needs met in health care f example? I'd like you to answer, Because I got a spine disease at 18 and have never got the right treatment, despite it being an ardent goal and effot´rt to seek help and help myself. Due to childhood developmental trauma (C-PTSD) and being a complex, Aspergers, sensitive, tense and nervous Virgo, it is not possible to heal alone on my own. At least not so far. i had not given up, but as they took my home, honour, legal rights and money 8 years ago, after breaking my life-energy and spirit down for decades, I am pretty given up, in sleeplessness too, because without personal assistence, I have no or little chance of even living. And I want my chance of a real life, like Lt Dan, who got healed well enough on his legs. I don't wan´nt to kill myself as I believe Dan did. Didn't he? Please tell me how you got better/well!

Lt. Dans arc is so real to me. Even before I knew it. My back problems put a stop to my gym bodybuilding passion. I was great, now I'm just average. Gotten a bit overweight. Have bad sleep due to inflammation and pain (before I slept like a baby). And overall felt like shit for 1.5 years. I really wanted to end it all. I had no love interests, no passions, except gym through my 17-22 yo. Now I'm 24 and went through all stages of 5 stages of grief (you may find it laughable, but if you have one strong passion in life, and suddenly ripped off of it, you'll understand. I got up at 5 am to go to the gym. I was doing it 6 times a week.). And just like Lt. Dan I've come to terms with it. And it feels like I found another passion in life - programming. I loved maths in school and Uni, and always liked logical stuff. Programming is what I do all of my free time. Sure I can't do bodybuilding anymore. But life moves on. As did Lt. Dan. As did I. If you feel like shit, and want to take the final decision - trust me. You always can do it, just say: I can always do it tomorrow. And tomorrow say the same. Move day by day. Week by week. Seek passion. And you'll prevail.

It was part of his character. When he was a kid he wore leg braces because he had weak bones. He also had some form of learning disability. He got stronger and overcame his physical disability. He can carry people cause he can run quite well at that point. His learning disability made him a bit literal and child-like in thinking but helped him become good at stuff like Ping pong and made him famous etc. He doesn't overcome the learning disability but we see him grow through it. Later in the movie he runs the entire US coast to coast a few times. (in case you haven't watched it yet) It's a movie about overcoming your disadvantages. Great movie. =)

Lt. Dan may not have thanked Gump for saving his life, but he sure showed it in the last scene of the vid here; by swimming away like that smiling for Forest to see was the only true "thank you" he could given to Gump and a nice one at that...

McNamara’s morons had an IQ between 85 & 80. Forrest was below 80. The morons were shown to be worse than useless as it took more effort and men to mind them than they provided help. Some were useful in cleaning or cooking situations, but they were very dangerous in combat, as they were as likely to kill their own men as the enemy. Forrest, because he never thought about using his gun, was not that dangerous. He was also actually not a moron, as he could remember and obey simple orders, which is more than the morons could.

Since the whole movie was the resemblence of modern American history, what happened to Lieutenant Dan was the resemblence of Vietnam trauma over Americans. A guy that comes from a family history of fighting with victories, he was furious not only losing his legs but not having a chance to die. While it was seen that he was blaming Forrest because he saved him, he was also blaming himself inside for the defeat. The whole depression process evolved later into being angry to life at all until it ended with the ship scene. It was really satisfying to see a good ending for Dan, having a peace finally.

Lt. Dan is a fine story arch to follow because he teaches about redemption for the imperfect, which is all of us; we're all imperfect. We all get angry and say things in a mean spirit. If we can find the people who look past that, we can get out of the pits we place ourselves in to.
