This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from September 22, 2011, features an interview with retired Lieutenant General Russel Honore conducted by Beth Courtney. Honore, a native of Lakeland, served in the United States Army from 1971-2008. He is best known as the commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, the unit responsible for coordinating military relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He discusses: growing up in Lakeland; the importance of education; the leadership opportunities provided by his high school extracurricular activities; his success in the Army; what it means to identify as Creole; his military assignments in Korea; the impact of the reduction of the military budget; working in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; his retirement in Louisiana; and the empowerment of creating a business that identifies a problem and fixes it.
