You are the number one transfer man,l put one of them ATB in my old lt230 she is fine except when l come of the accelerate pedal she whines because of the new input gear on the old gears. The transfer is 1.003 if l remember not like that fine spline you have there, fine spline l noticed you cant put a PTO on them.

I have not seen a Defender PTO in 15 years! This box was an LT230Q suffix G with the fine tooth count 1:211 Seems as if a PTO version of the input gear is available www.shop4autoparts.net/parts/transfer-box/ftc4850-transfer-gear-38t-12-1-oem/

I replaced my 94 range rover's viscous drive (Borg warner) with an LT230 that was purchased from Ashcroft. I had it built with the ATB diff installed as well as the stainless steel inserts to stop case wear from the shaft. I think this is the best update/upgrade you can get for the LT230. It works fantastic. I only noticed one draw back. If you use the emergency brake with the transfer case not locked, while rolling down a slight grade, it makes a particular sound and acts totally different than the Viscous coupler did when using the emergency brake. I suspect the ATB diff is trying to work at what it's job is, and that's to make the front diff travel at the same speed as the rear diff. I think it is a great upgrade though even with the funny situation when the LT230 is not locked while moving and E-braking.. I added tru-trac ATB diffs to both ends of the rover. It makes the vehicle drive completely differently with the now 3 ATB front, center and rear diffs. I live in California, near pismo beach. on the sand the setup I am using is incredible. there is almost no wheel spin in the sand. in fact trying to throw sand around is almost impossible. The traction is just that good. I decided to purchase these ATB diff's while I was watching a KZbinr channel called "Roaming the outback", who put these on an old diesel defender that he used in Australia. I actually asked him questions about it, and based on his answers bought first the rear Tru Trac diff and then the front Ashcroft version of the Tru Trac-ATB. When I mentioned this to my rover experts who restore Land Rovers I was told I would be breaking front CVC joints left and right. I can tell you that after 4 years of having this setup, I am happy to report that I have had zero issues with any of the ATB diffs. My 94 Range Rover feels very well "planted" on the road and off. I also have traction control on the rear of my 94, which enhances the rear Tru-trac diff by making it activate sooner. My traction control light now has only been activated in extreme traction situations. Th rear diff is just that good. ,Ashcroft is the place to buy this awesome upgrade. And for the record, I had this transfer case built in England without a core, and shipped to the California, USA. this custom T-Case was still cheaper than a rebuilt to stock form LT230 that was for sale anywhere here in the United States.

Last LT230 I did had also worn through the washers, but just barely, and not evenly between the four. Put new washers in figuring they’d all soon wear to an even distance from center. You might already know this but the very early RRs featured a center LSD. I’ve read it was discontinued due to weakness, or due to alarming handling characteristics when transitioning traction surfaces, or maybe both.

It seems the centre diff wears when the vehicle is on a loose surface with the lock not engaged. Because it is a permanent 4x4, many overlook the fact that the diff lock should be used as soon as you get on to loose surfaces - if you get one wheel spinning then the centre diff is running an eye watering speed, not the casual movement on hard surfaces

What about disco 2 with the diff lock delete?

They relied on traction control - locked up the spinning wheel

Hi Mike, have you shared your crush tube replacement with Ashcroft? They could improve their replacement boxes too 😎

No, because they know that setting the correct tube is complicated - hence the wee jig we made - selectable tubes are available from LR, but they are about £15 each - there are 20 sizes from 58.350mm to 59.300mm Hence, do them down it JP's on the jig and then turn to suit We get about 19 tubes out of a 4 ft tube for $50 Every crush tube I have done has been uneven

@@BritannicaRestorations yeah I guess, would take longer for each build but seems a shame not to improve the design when possible 😊

Pity there was not a STD tube and shims - would make life easy - been looking for small shims but to no avail
