I play bass, but when I was learning a song, I would always get distracted by trying to "continue" it with random improvised scales rather than learn the real song. Meaning I would always end up making my own song while trying to learn existing ones. It kind of ended up working until I got real lessons.

I found the most complete musician of all youtube my god. I have not stopped watching your videos. Aside from being among the best I've ever seen, his acting skills are absurdly good. Did you take acting classes? It is surprising how many characters you can do so brilliantly, and it shows that you just play and have fun. Best youtuber 2021, by far.

The "lets-only-play-wonderwall-dude" actually was my first TEACHER. God, 4 months into playing and still just strumming along chords. I guess I would still strum basic zombie chords after 3 years.

Was he like teaching you new chords? Cause I don't think there's anything wrong with only strumming chords 4 months into the journey.
@ssm445
@ssm445 2 жыл бұрын
@@spreadwuvokay Knowing your open chords and being able to change them with confidence is crucial, I agree to that! But it took me the first 2 months of self teaching to achieve that, before I took lessons. Sure, I was not 100% there, not playing and changing them with confidence, and strangely struggling with the D minor chord, but there was no point in doing one open chord song after the other. The confidence came with time (as did bar chords). My second teacher taught me songs that needed techniques I find more important to learn early on (at least on the electric), like palm muting, alternate picking, string skipping. That was in the first couple of months (I am a late learner, my free time for practicing is limited). No open chords only songs because I could show him these in the first lesson. I guess the first teacher doesn't even know about the stuff I got taught in the 2nd and 3rd year, like the CAGED system or 3NPS scales. I am in my 4th year now, and I am quite sure I would have stopped playing after a year or so with the first teacher. I think a good teacher should always teach you something you have to struggle with, but is not out of your reach. This struggling kind of frustrated me at times, but I have been open about that with my teacher, so he could always come up with something that could build confidence before revisiting what I was struggling with. Sorry for the wall of text 😏
@spreadwuvokay
@spreadwuvokay 2 жыл бұрын
@@ssm445 Thank you for the wall of text, it was very informative and made what you previously said make a lot more sense. I was just thinking that open chords are or at least should be a pretty big part of the beginning of the journey, 4 months is pretty damn early still. I wouldn't think that everyone would have it down perfectly that soon, especially when it comes to arpeggios and hammer on's and pull offs and things like that.
