It would be interesting to add in, or do a separate video on, "what are the clothes that hit the venn diagram of warm, breathable, durable, professional, travel ready" even as subjective as that is. being comfortable is crucial to a successful shoot

The big game changer for me was creating a spreadsheet with literally every component (including tiny things like memory cards and tripod plates) and then two columns of tick boxes alongside. I go through and tick all the boxes in the first column of gear I think I'll need and then tick the second column once it's packed. It's amazing how fastidious you can be and then still forgot some stupid (but vital!) component that screws things up on a shoot.

You know when ads start showing you stuff that was actively on your mind, and you just know some deep algorithm is tracking you? Your video made me feel the same way, as this was exactly what I needed to see this morning. I'm currently prepping gear for the largest and most complex production of my career, and your breakdown of both the actual equipment, plus the decision philosophy was not only informative, but incredibly cathartic. Without a frame of reference, I'm constantly worried I'm under or overthinking each item, but to see literally some of the same gear-for some of the same reasons-in your kit has quite honestly revamped my energy to get some of the final logistics sorted. Much appreciated.

18:30 I just shot a doc for two week in Jan/Feb We flew into literally the smallest airport I have ever been to in the US, the guy who guided the plane to the gate on the runway, unloaded the bags and then went to the help desk (he was the ONLY guy at the airport) Of 18 check bags 16 were lost... Apparently they were left back at the main hub airport and the airline just planned on having it ride in later in the week...cool. Of course this was all not communicated to us until we landed and realized most of our gear and clothes never made it. The executive producer had to call in a favor and have a private jet go pick up all the luggage Either that or someone was going to have to take a rental van and drive 8 hours round trip to go pick up the luggage (that potentially wouldn't all fit into the rental van) On top of that there was a really bad snow storm at the time and our entire lens rental package was delayed by a few days, so we had to borrow cameras from a local college film class so we could film on the first day This was definitely one of the most stressful gigs I've ever done

Gear doesn’t matter… but let me go through 30 or $40,000 worth of camera gear… and this isn’t as much gear as I normally take. Haha 😂 one day I hope I have the dilemma of trying to figure out what gear I want to take or leave behind. Thank you for the inspiration and insight! #goals

Such an underappreciated part of filmmaking. The time, effort, and focus it takes to get prepped for any shoot was genuinely surprising when I started. Thanks for showing us your workflow. There are definitely some things in here that I will use when packing for my next shoot! Cheers!

With the stress and remote locations, this stuff runs through my head constantly. Looks like I’ll be buying some F-Stop bags, lol. Thanks again, and safe travels!

In the future when you have time, would like to hear what your opinion is when it comes to shoulder rig vs easy rig in terms of portable operation in the field. I have noticed you use the shoulder rig more often in your real world shoot broll, I am sure both options yield close to the same results but would be interesting to hear what your opinion is. Thank you.
@LucForsyth
@LucForsyth 14 күн бұрын
I like the Easy rig for long shoots in one location. Events, concerts, speeches or handheld interviews - something where you’re rolling all day/night and not leaving. It’s easier on the shoulders, but can be tough on the low back if you’re not careful. Overall it’s more comfortable. If you’re moving around a lot or getting in and out of cars, then the Easy Rig isn’t really practical and I’ll just go pure handheld. In terms of steadiness, no difference really. The easy rig helps with operator fatigue, not camera stability. Hope that helps!

Hey Luc, thanks for this video. Do you ever get a Carnet for international travel? I've heard that coming back through customs in the US can be a hassle if you don't have proof of owning the gear. Got my first international doc coming up in October in Uganda!

Just sent in my gear list to the carnet office (the chamber of commerce in Canada, different in every country) and paid! It’s easy once you have your list properly formatted, and doesn’t take long to process.

I personally feel you gave too much hint for people to figure out your storage locker... Now maybe it was done in a way to point to the wrong location as well, so good if this is the case... But I would be careful for things like that.

For international travel and this much gear, do you need a carnet? (sorry if you answer this later in the video?)
@robinprobyn1971
@robinprobyn1971 18 күн бұрын
Depends what country you go to , some are part of the Carnet system , some are not. Always check before you go of course :) .. if you go to Europe , unmanned borders can add to the fun of carnets , ie you leave a country and enter another without the stamps and pages taken out, needed in the process.

Hello Luc, when filming on the shoulder for several hours, what is more tiring: the weight of the camera on the shoulder or the position of the right arm holding the camera?

Think tank for the win . Since I changed to the airport series , Ive not had any hassle from gate agents wanting me to check in portabrace camera bag , also fx9 , which would happen quite regularly, same with pelican games , they are such a target for disgruntled security /gate / checkin folk ,with a crap existence , who mistakenly believe you are living the life . Think tank just look like any other bag , and can fit fx3 / lenses . Just have to take off the EVF . Wish I had done this years ago.

That last line is the most relatable thing ever! After gear prepping and going through mental and physical checklists I’m always wondering if I forgot anything. I just travelled for a multi project trip and I had everything……except my smallrig multitool for camera rigging 😅. Luckily I had a spare hex tool in my tripod camera plate and a traditional multitool. This was very helpful Luc! Thank you. Also would you mind sharing what does the crew look like for a project and budget like this?

How did you pack 6 V-Mount batteries? I've always thought you were allowed 2, 99WH or less per person in a carry-on, is that right? Great Video!
@robinprobyn1971
@robinprobyn1971 18 күн бұрын
Under 100WH its as many as the airline or weight allows , so 98,s ,in theory you can take as many thats doable . 100-160WH .. is two , and you could sometimes get away with one on the camera . Over 160 WH NG. I regularly fly with 4 x 98 Mini V mount, never had a problem but they are always inspected . Traveling with non Mini batteries, personally I would never do , now that I changed . D Tap chargers are also good for travel .
