I think they are similar enough in what they are doing, to say that Pavarotti is much better. Not just better; the best. Maybe there were others who were better in pre-recording history. But he has no modern equal. His sound is open, and effortless. Domingo's is closed, tamped. Compared to Pavarotti, he sounds like a male Sara Brightman, singing with a duck face. Now the Josh Groban vs Michael Buble comparisons, on the other hand, don't work because they are doing different things -- crooner vs classical. Like comparing Andrea Bocelli vs Frank Sinatra. But between these 2, Pavarotti is so much better.

How blessed were we to live in a world of great voices, recording, and reproduction? Our generation will never really know how Caruso sounded but every generation from now on will know how Battle, Callas, Carreras, Corelli, Domingo, Fleming, Horne, Kraus, Lanza, Milner, Moffo, Norman, Melchior, Pavarotti, Pierce, Pinza, Price, Siepi, Sills, Sutherland, Tercel, Treigle, Troyanos, Tucker, von Stade, just to mention a few of my favorites, sounded. I got to hear Battle, Corelli, Horne, Kraus, Pavarotti, Price, Siepi, Sills, Sutherland, and Treigle live; that would be enough for a lifetime. "O Holy Night" (also known as "Cantique de Noël") is a well-known Christmas carol. Originally based on a French-language poem by poet Placide Cappeau, written in 1843, with the first line "Minuit, chrétiens! c'est l'heure solennelle" (Midnight, Christians, is the solemn hour) that composer Adolphe Adam set to music in 1847. The English version is by John Sullivan Dwight.
