Most people cannot understand why they react as they do, but they know they are listening to something that has transported them to a different place that barely touches this place we inhabit. Great music and the vibrations of the orchestra combined with his voice feel like a direct connection to the angels and to God. This is what produces the chills and tears nearly everybody experiences but cannot explain.

Luciano Pavarotti was a student of the voice all his life. His father was a tenor, and a pretty good one, but not a talent to go the distance. I remember reading a story about him that he met a hero of his. A major tenor of the time, and when Pavarotti saw this tenor, the tenor was doing scales. Warming up his voice for the day and putting in a lot of effort to be precise and exact with the notes he was singing. Pavarotti asked him about this, and this tenor said that he was studying. That as a singer he was an eternal student of his craft and held on to the discipline that this was what was important to be a singer. Pavarotti, who was still pretty young, took this to heart. He always thought of himself as a student, always learning something about his voice and honing his technique and how the human voice operates as a musical instrument. That is how Luciano Pavarotti could pierce the hearts and souls of millions of opera fans while he was still alive, and how he still looms like a colossus over operatic tenors today. He was blessed...but he worked at it as well, with passion!

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life. curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

I think you speak to a generation that hasnt had the luck yet to understand or hear the beauty of it, so thanks for that. Spread the word. Art IS important.
