Sped it up to the correct speed, and got it to fit to the video...hope you enjoy, and sorry for the poor quality.
Had to play around with this clip for over 2 hours before I finally got it right! I hope my efforts were not in vain.
Not a big fan of Pavarotti's heavier roles, but have to admit that this was quite a good performance.

@@toivonencresto I have, and although Corelli had a great voice, Pavarotti far surpasses him in clarity, tone, and natural musicality. His voice might not have been quite as big as the dramatic tenors, Del Monaco or Corelli, but it was by far the most beautiful. We also have to remember that a proper technique should make the voice last a lifetime. Corelli was finished at 50 because of vocal challenges. In contrast, Pavarotti was nearly 60 at the second Three Tenors concert in Los Angeles in 1994. Listen to his Nessun Dorma there. It's amazing, as were all his arias there. He continued to perform live up until a year before his death at 71. For me, the big three will always be Pavarotti, Corelli, and Del Monaco, but Pavarotti stands head and shoulders above. I also wish Corelli had lasted longer.

Indeed, Araiza did end up returning to the Met in the 90s but by then he was past his prime. If you have ever heard that man sing, you will understand why Domingo was so jealous...the best tenor for Mozart since Wunderlich in my honest opinion, and the best tenor produced by Mexico to date.

This great performan includes to terrific high "C's" of the kind I remember driving audiences nuts when I heard him,(as I( often did at the Met, and also frequently next door at " Philharmonic Hall" ) live. I have been amazed and disappointed to find else where the utterly false and idiotic assertion that Pavarotti's voice was small. His voice was mid-to large sized but had an incredibly vibrant, intensely resonant and exciting presence in the hall.

esolean7 I think Pavarotti must have had crisp overtones and a very cutting type of voice. The microphones always pick up his voice quite well. He not only records well on record, but he seems to record well even with a distant mic in the theater. That is an interesting phenomena regarding him. The only sure way is be in theater, but perhaps he is emitting overtones that are not readily picked up by the ear but more easily by the mic. I have no idea.
@absdyna
@absdyna 5 жыл бұрын
Pavarotti almost certainly did not have a large voice. Certainly no bigger than a standard lyric tenor although he started out lyrico leggero. This is of course in terms of volume. However, it was a very free and ringing voice and he also employed very good compression. When he sings C#s with Dame Sutherland, there is no doubt about who the bigger voice is, however, Pavarotti is very present. His C# cuts through Dame Sutherland's. This is the case in all of his recordings as well, never very loud but always very present.

I was interested in going to see it, even though I don't think much of Villazon, I still want to see him before his voice is gone completely. I decided against it though. I heard that Domingo did something similar to Carreras... Can't remember where I read it, I think it was a was a quote. But it was something about Domingo unseating Carreras in order to get the performance. It didn't help that Domingo got on well with the management at the Met (not surprising with the amount of money he was bringing in for them). The 1977 Rigoletto that is widely praised by Domingo's fans (with the shouted high B in La Donna e Mobile) was supposed to be sung by Pavarotti.

I think that this is 1978, Vienna State opera (not La Scala as I previously thought) Von Karajan conducting. The beginning of his transition to heavier roles. He first sang Cavaradossi that year I think. He sang an OUTSTANDING Cavaradossi at the Met in 1978, the 'E Lucevan le Stelle' was wonderful (It's on KZbin if you don't have it yourself).

I can't see how the results of that poll were instruments of mass marketing. They were voted for by the viewers. They are of performances that were broadcast live. Pavarotti tenore leggero? mai stato : ha debuttato in Bohème non la vedo molto competente in materia di canto...

They did make a big mistake. The 1981 Rigoletto at the Met four years later was a massive triumph. In fact, the 'La Donna e Mobile' from the 1981 performance was voted the 11th greatest televised moment at the Met. Pavarotti took 2nd with his 1977 Che Gelida Manina and 5th with the 1981 Una Furtiva. Regardless, no matter how much he 'got friendly' with the management and pushed other singers away. The fact still remained that while Domingo's acting was good. The singing wasn't so great.

After taking a closer look at the video, I knew that there was no way that was one of the Vienna Il Trovatores with Price. It's outside, so that must be the Arena di Verona, which certainly explains his standing at the front of the stage. He did a series of performances of Manrico at the Verona Arena with Ricciarelli and the existing recording of a performance does show him doing this stretta with the B. He did it with C in San Francisco, Joan Sutherland called it 'magnificent'.

Villazon has some sort of collaboration with Domingo doesn't he? You'd think it would help having a veteran tenor looking after you. But with Domingo's technique, I guess not. It's hard to tell whether he's wrecked his voice completely. He had nasty cracks in Don Carlo, but the rest was OK. He hasn't gotten to shouting high notes yet. So maybe he can save his voice, I doubt it.

Apparently Domingo tried to cripple his competitor's careers by singing at the houses they were engaged to sing at. Apparently he pushed Araiza away from the Met and did something similar to Carreras's career. I have no proof though. That's why Pavarotti said 'He is a good artist, but he isn't a good person' Something like that.
