DIY SKID STEER. Part 2. Boom arm. MINI LOADER.

Cleaning snow, digging, loading, transporting, and possibly many other types of work - doesn't matter, the loader is an indispensable assistant.
It's a very interesting project, but the most difficult one I've done so far. The lift arms build has literally blown my mind, but I do like how the result looks. And what do you think?

This is a common technique for KZbin content creators to play music during time Laps. However I have seen another creater continue the shops sounds (such as a lathe cutting) during time laps but allow the sound to be normal speed. It's actually a pretty interesting affect and a nice option. I actually like the music but I can understand your feelings about it. For me I enjoy seeing a variety of options during the videos. But one thing is for sure. She is excellent at her work. 💯👏👏

Lucia, I love the design of your skid loader and I am a welder fabricator and heavy equipment operator and mechanic. First, metal is weldable and replaceable. You can always fix design flaws and that's all part of the learning process. My concern about your Skid loader is basically your pins and bushings. Those components have to be made with some very hard material or they will gall or wear out very fast. I don't know if you are aware of this. Also you must put grease zerts to do daily maintenance on the machine. All friction points need lubrication points that won't get damaged in the operation of the machine. Brass is also an option for wear parts and bushings. It is always good to be able to replace bushings and pins easily. So you would basically make a place to press in a bushing that can be removed and replaced along with the pin. So where you are making heavy duty welded in holes to pass your pin through,those should be much bigger to resist excessive wear. Because sooner or later somebody will over load the machine and try to pick up something very heavy and it will cause excessive friction in the hinge points and they will grind together and wear out fast. I would recommend that you go find a construction site or heave equipment company and ask to speak with the mechanic. I would recommend also you go to Caterpillar and look at one of their skid loaders and take thousands of pictures for reference. Now you may make this for yourself and be the only person using it to move potting soil and dirt in your garden, but the next thing you know, your neighbor comes and borrows it and they use it like a "communal donkey and overload it". Also the steel plates and your reinforcements are very good and I like the way it looks. The rear plates should be much heavier in my humble opinion. The reason is they must resist excessive twisting forces. Because you will get a scoop of rock or wet dirt and turn the machine quickly and the inertia will make plates twist and they will break welds and it could cause a failure that could injure you or somebody working with you. I don't knock you for building this machine, you are doing great. Everything must be overbuilt because of the stresses and constant vibration.

+1 on the replaceable bushings. it's going to be virtually impossible to think of everything without a team of engineers behind so you will provably modify and upgrade your design during the process and even after years of usage. Very interesting to watch the process.

I have used a lot of skids and I am not sure if the bushing are harden steel. I have a feeling they are just mild steel and grease is applied. As we have had to replace bushings in an older machine that someone used and never used great on it. We pretty much cut out the old one using a hole saw and a board to keep it in place. He milled up one that was the about the same size and then welded it back on by using 5 foot long round stock to aligned both bushings. As long as you use the right carbide hole saw and you think about it all they are pretty easy. It did not take more than a few days to do about about half on an old loader machine. In the end the machine work quite well and after fixing everything, spray and pray, new rubber it was a very nice small loader.

Well said Jimmy, Just a couple of other little points I'd like to add for Lucia to consider. Grease nipples or zerts are easily broken off during operation so it is always worth putting a protection collar around them or locating them where they are protected and this is why so many manufacturers bore a passage through the center of the pin and recess the nipple in the end of the pin. Early skid steers were a real pain to work on due to the frame being made and then the engine shoved in from the rear with no consideration given to accessing anything. If the cab can be set up to be tilted with all the controls pivoting on the same line as the cab then it is so much easier to replace a failed part.

As someone who has done a lot of fabrication over the years, but never anything this complicated I can truly say you are doing a fantastic job. Stopping everything warping as you weld it up is hard work. What you've designed is very complicated, a lot to get your head around, and it's all too easy to forget about something, but it can always be fixed one way or another. Great to see the progress on this.

Not that you have the time, but there is a fellow in Australia, Curtis of Custom Edge Engineering, who does great videos of repairs on mining equipment. He goes into detail about the failures of equipment, and how to avoid it, like where to place grease fittings. Keep up the great work, and kudos to your photographer and editor.

There always are errors made in a project. Parts that we are sometimes blind to for some reason. Sometimes we catch them early, sometimes later. It is upsetting but we have to tell ourselves that it is okay, nobody is perfect, and we will just resolve the problem and move on. This is such an ambitious project. You are doing a great job.

Nice work! As an equipment operator and owner of a similar sized unit I would expect a 700 +\- LB safe lifting ability out of such a machine. As to echo some previous comments Adding the ability to be greased in the joints is very important. Necessary if you intend to use the machine often in dirty conditions, as it could wear your joints prematurely. One current solution could be to use the heaviest grease possible on your joint pins apon final installation. Regardless excellent work thus far, I’ll be looking forward to seeing your machines completion! I have great faith that it will be a winner

Not sure how much weight your looking to lift with that skid steer. But it's looking amazing. And to see it being built is awesome. I know these are normally expensive to buy. I was blessed finding one in the junk yard that I bought for $$600 spent another $200 on wheels and another $200 having the flywheel machined to work with the skid steer Hydraulic pump adapter. So to me a $1000 for a running and operating skidsteer was a great deal. But the fact you have the skills to build this. Is amazing and something money can't buy. Keep uo the work

A skidloader is a great thing to have around, I've got a little Bobcat M371 that must be over 50 years old. It's so handy for small jobs, I did a little restoration work on it about 5 years ago, it got new hoses, a set of cylinder seals and I made a new bucket for it. I must make a tine bucket for it when i get some time. I'm loving this build, that's a big project to tackle and there are always going to be modifications and improvements as you go, don't stress about the upper cylinder brackets too much, a solution will present itself, I would say don't rule out a redesign of the arms, if you're not happy with things it's best sometimes to bite the bullet and remake it.

It looks really good, compared to the skid steers here in the US. Your design of the arm’s, are truly unique. Upon completion, it should be able to handle fairly heavy loads. You’ve definitely implemented art, craft, and design into this build. Great job. I can’t wait to see the final result.

Watching this, you can see that the most space efficient machine is absolutely and without question the sleeping cat. It basically fits anywhere and does pretty much all the work.
