Great news is that my loader has a bucket and a Bob-Tach now! However, I figured out a serious problem with hydraulics that I have to solve. In general, you’d better see how it was 😉

There are bolts called "plow bolts" . They have a circular conical head that wedges in a conical hole and a hardened nut is used on the other end. Perhaps that is something that may save you time on future projects. The shots of you welding with the exhaust right above you show how strong the exhaust is, very interesting. I had already seen it before on the other channel, I could not resist 😅 Piston seals are very easy to replace, you can soak them a few minutes in oil heated to about 60ºC to soften them a little. Rod seals can be tricky on those smaller diameters, there is a tool that bends them into a "pretzel" shape so that they fit through the hole.

I used to rebuild hydraulic cylinders. The cylinder leaking down is most likely an O-ring that has failed and fluid is seeping around it. The easiest thing to do would be to find a local place that sells gaskets and just take it in there and match it up. Make sure the O-ring does not stick too far off the rod as it will "slice" part of the O-ring off when the rod is inserted back into the barrel and cause the same issue. Loving the build so far👍.

As a heavy equipment mechanic this is just amazing, i hope you plan to build a cab and boom arm stabilizer to keep your boom from moving sideways while you’re loaded with the boom up. it’s very important to consider that, as to not roll the machine over on its side.

Really remarkable work. My only concern is that the bucket looks likely to bend under a heavy load. I also find that bolt heads that protrude in to the bucket tend to have things get hung up on them. Perhaps consider making a plate with holes for the bolt heads to recess in to and add thickness at the cutting edge. I'm really loving this build and can't wait to see the finished product.

Brilliant work! I do believe the bucket may not be reinforced as well as it should be. The impact of a bucket against rocks or hard pan earth will take its toll on the sides and top. I believe I would look at some significant edge reinforcement. This is a great project to watch. Both the engineering and production is enchanting...

I have to watch this entirely. That cat looks like a beast. I like everything inc. the design of those chubby tires. I never seen those on BobCats before but sizing and all are well suited. Don't forget to take us for a test dig. Holy smokes, great job.

One step forward, two steps back. At least you found the problem, without having to scrap and redo the whole hydraulic system. I thought it might have been in the proportioning valve, causing the cylinders to leak down. It’s probably bad o-rings in the cylinder, or a crack in the o-ring sleeve.

Usually skid steer tires are blocky and strong to handle the continuous skid. Those tires are not typical. Well maybe they work at snow.

I've really enjoyed watching this series. I would guess that the cylinder repair will be fairly easy. Normally just a couple o rings and a couple teflon rings if I remember right. The teflon ones are more rigid, but you can work them by hand and stretch them to get them in the groove. The will normally shrink back down if you put a hose clamp around them and slowly tighten it taking care not to tear or pinch the ring.

Like many others, I admire your guts to tackle a large project like this and it looks great. It all depends on the intended use, but 3 mm sheet on that bucket thickness may prove to be too weak, regardless of your structural reinforcements. If you're just scooping dirt or using it like a large wheel barrow, it might be fine but if you're using it like other skid steers I've seen, it has a high chance of wearing out quickly or buckling. This is obviously just my opinion but 6 mm would be more of a thickness I'd be comfortable with while anticipating abuse.

I think she is not even aware how crazy impossible it is to build a thingy like that for the first time , and building it with such profession! She could have propperly went to engeneering doing Machinery Diploma! Very talented. I love how she takes on stuff, besides it is scary. maybe a shopdog would help to decompress stressy situations as they always demand potty time or playtime when they sense you need a break! We always think they demand time from us, when in fact, they help us relax and get a good work/play balance in life!

replacing seals in a hydraulic cylinder is a piece of cace-it can however also be the overpreasure-valve(if there is one)in the cylinder that is leaking thru

the leak should be a fairly easy fix once you get the cylinder off the machine again, the progress looks great!

Great project!!! Obviously you are still in the middle of the project. However, most skid steers have a lot of added weight in the rear end. My Bobcat has about a 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch thick rear door behind the engine, both as an engine cover, as well as a counterweight. Anyway, it will help a lot once you start using the bucket. Of course it wouldn't hurt to try it out and see how tippy the skid steer is, and how the traction feels.

5:43 recommend making a sleeve for the bolt the height of where you want that spring tension, or possibly some green or purple lock tite to keep the bolt adjustment where you want it.

When working with hydraulic oil you can put on old vacuum on the inlet of the tank (not in the oil). The "vacuum" that is created can reduce the amount of oil that leaks out when working with the hoses etc.

As a farm boy who learned to operate a skid-steer when I was like 5 years old, I have thoughts. One... this is such a cool project. Two... I know a poor abandoned skid-steer sitting in a barn for nearly 40 years because its 28 horsepower Kohler twin cylinder was ruined by an overtightened, too-long screw into its cylinder block. There must be an easier way... haha, it's funny because I follow other channels where they try to restore junk to a working state... and Lucia's probably right to build her own from raw materials than go that way. But my real question is, once it is done, what do you plan to do with it?

You should ignore all the comments telling you the bucket is too small or not heavy enough. Your skid steer is not heavy enough and your hydraulics are not strong enough to be able to put enough of a load in that bucket to damage it. You did fine.

Ran into this issue when I rebuilt a front loader on a tractor. I had welded on the ends of the cylinder while it was in the compressed state and the heat from the wielding had damaged the seals on the piston.

cylinder is very easy to rebuild. it iwll have a piston attacked to the bottom of the rod (large round disc) if it is ot welded on that is. and it will have seals attached to it. you will also need to check the cylinder walls to ensure there are no gouges onthe walls. the end cap has 1-2 seals in it to keep fluid in. when the piston rod goes in and out.

I would recommend using a high carbon hardened steel for the cutting edge of that bucket with plow bottom bolts. and use some hardfacing welding wire on the leading edges where regular steel is at. I wondering if some check valves would solve your hydraulic settling issue.

The bucket is beautiful, but I really think you may need to add a stiffener along the lower lip to prevent it from bowing. I have a John Deere bucket made from similar thickness steel and the blade has a stiffener that is at least 12mm. Even at that I've managed to bend it in use.

And a tube across the top edge to stiffen and mount three grab hooks for chain. I believe this will get bent up. I have a heavier one and it still bends.

Yes, chain hooks are a must. @court2379 She already added stiffeners though, and the hydraulics are not strong enough to pick up anything that's going to bend the bucket.

You may wanna make a hard stop for the bolts to run up against for the detachment handles springs. The ones that keep the handle tight against the body. Or the bolts will end up backing out even with the spring tension against them. Nice work.

Great video as always Lucia. If you haven't already pulled the cylinder off and apart, it may be worth you bleeding it in case there is some air in there still. Other than that it will be a piston seal or the o-ring between the piston and ram shaft. Good luck.

9 times out of 10 when you have a hydraulic drift issue it's the packing on the piston. Usually an easy fix unless something was inside the cylinder and damaged the bore or piston itself. Awesome work! It's really looking good! Are you going to build a cab for it or some sort of roll over protection?

you could test the hydraulic rams with a ball valve in line to cut them off. i think it to be unlikely since they are new. My neighbour had a similar problem with his mf50hx loader and it was the valve chest controlling the ram direction that allowed the leakdown.

Impressive! The attachment feature you made is good, but your handles are too thin to use. In time, most people stand on those to push them down. Hurts your hand if too thin. The best choice is to let a hydraulic piston do all the hard work and never touch them with your hands at all! Look at a Takeuchi TL12V2 to see how to do it!

I guess a small metal piece have entered the oil and torn a seal, jus hope the cylinder bore isn't scratched. You need an oil filter if you don't already have it

Probably just the seal on the piston, or backup ring is damaged/missing. Could also be the o ring under the piston to the rod. I have seen it before, no big deal its an easy fix.
