The market seems hungry for EV engineering info. Just look at the traffic the Munro channel gets. Here we get the data dump straight from the engineers themselves, from physical principle, to design intent, to mechanical design, to manufacturing. This is phenomenal. *Nobody* does this, laying out the "secret sauce". Bravo Lucid!

Reprehensible to present this as an educational video (not a stock pump) while omitting to mention the most important engineering fact: Lucid is running its motor at DOUBLE the Voltage of the Tesla Plaid motor. No they didn’t miraculously double the power density with neat wires and magnet placement. Chances are if one applied 924V to the Plaid motor it would out-perform the admittedly nice-looking Lucid contraption. Plus the Tesla doesn’t need a rear differential at all. It has independent motors for torque vectoring.

@@Miata822 Not impressed. These doubled motor performance figures are a function of doubled voltage, see physics. if you honestly believe Rawlingson can out Elon Elon and break the laws of physics X 2 with nice prefab motor coils alone, then I guess from you at least he has earned his Swiss watch.
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 Жыл бұрын
@@juliancox3229 electric motors don't work that way, or even close. Maximum available voltage is only used to drive the motor at the highest end of the operating speed range, to overcome the back EMF which is proportional to speed and magnetic field strength, so having more voltage available would make no difference to the motor over most the speed range. At low speed power is limited by torque which is limited by the current and the magnetic field strength which the motor can withstand, as well as the current limit of the inverter. In the middle of the speed range the limitations are usually in the rest of the system, such as battery discharge rate and inverter power limits due to heat dissipation, but can also be limited by motor heat dissipation; this is the constant-power region explained in the video. If you applied extra voltage to the Tesla motor you would just get excessive current that it can't handle. Even a motor designed for higher voltage doesn't have much of an advantage: to use the twice the voltage it would have twice as many turns of wire with half of the wire cross-sectional size, carrying half the current... for the same magnetic field strength resulting in the same torque and power, and using the same electrical power. The upper speed limit doesn't change because with twice the number of winding turns it needs twice the voltage to reach the same speed against back EMF.

@36:07 No, the accelerator input does not control the motor drive frequency. The motor drive power is synchronized (that's why it's a "synchronous" motor) with the rotor position. The accelerator signal is used to determine motor current, which determines motor torque output, which causes the vehicle to accelerate, which is a change in motor speed, and the inverter follows that speed.
@andersemanuel

I wish Tesla would disclose a peak HP figure and I wish both Tesla and Lucid would disclose peak RPM. I suspect the Tesla motor is actually capable of more peak hp and peak RPM. Though overall the lucid motor is clearly better.
@beforebefore
@beforebefore 2 жыл бұрын
@@bob15479 Tesla with Peak RPM... maybe the carbon fiber wrapped one, but remember that the only reason they had to do that is because of the rotor laminate design, which has floating laminate sections above the magnet "V" - that are essentially non-supported - and would detach at high RPM. Not so with the Lucid design.
@michalfaraday8135
@michalfaraday8135 2 жыл бұрын
@@beforebefore That´s not the only reason for the carbon wrap. Any rotor will expand at very high rpm. Meaning you actually need extra distance between the stator and the rotor with the traditional design. The Lucid laminate shape is what you´ll find in other rotors. Chevy Bolt laminate is almost the same. One thing I disliked about this video is that they make these things sound like Lucid is the first that realized where to put the magnets or cooling. Nope, everyone knows closer is better. There are always compromises that influence the final design.
@beforebefore
@beforebefore 2 жыл бұрын
@@michalfaraday8135 Tesla designed a rotor with basically a floating segment that sits between the magnet pairs... bad design choice. This required the carbon fiber wrap, which is far more "increased diameter" than just material expansion at the nominal 20k RPM... no steel alloy material would expand that much at that RPM and survive. This allows Lucid to run much tighter coupling between stator and rotor for much better efficiency and power.
@michalfaraday8135
@michalfaraday8135 2 жыл бұрын
@@beforebefore If that was really the case, why would they do that? If you look at Model Y, the main magnets have the same position as Lucid. Chevy Bolt is even closer and has almost the same design as Lucid for all magnets. There is nothing special about the Lucid laminate profile.

That said, I am confused by the Peter's inference of achieveing 11% efficiency improvements over the competitors. When I look at the closest Tesla S model with 100kWh battery and the Air at 112kWh then the kWh/mile makes the Lucid just under 4% more efficient. I realize that isn't apples to apples, but the design improvements demonstrated are best proven through improvements in efficiency, lower costs and/or improved reliability.

thanks to this production and the carbon wrapped motor of the competitor! it appears to me that Lucid's motor is more expensive to make and they achieve higher HP/power by reducing the radius of the motor then compensate the loss of torque through gears. Competitor's motor appears a lot cheaper due to conventional design. The reason they are forced use carbon wrap is they have to reuse that existing conventional motor design, but since the rotor radius is slightly larger, the centrifugal forces are too much to reach higher RPMs/Power. in short, electric motor design pretty much a compromise, no one is significantly better than the other!!😁

The series of motors which started with the Model 3 are smaller than the old Large Drive Unit motor - so much smaller that two of them fit in the Plaid's rear drive unit. You can't reasonably compare the output of motors of different physical sizes. Also, the old induction motors overheated almost instantly when used at the those high power levels that Tesla advertised to look good; the current permanent magnet motors (including the variant in the Plaid) produce less heat in the rotor (because they are PM instead of induction), and all of the current Tesla motors are better cooled than their old motors.

By removing luxury, sticking to items that are easily mass produced, like these motors, there is no reason to doubt that Lucid can beat Tesla in price and performance. Elon has alienated the very best engineers on earth, sticking only on obedient and hard working engineers. This is the price of Tesla's egos.

The comments about torque starting @15:47 are excellent. Despite the claims of so many auto enthusiasts who don't understand what they are saying, motor (or engine) torque by itself really doesn't matter.

This is what I call HEALTHY COMPETITION for the Consumers benefit in the years to come!!! Thankyou for sharing. I am excited when the prices are more affordable for the working class. Working class spend more in Volumes then the smaller number of Wealthy that can afford these now.

Another great tech talk and I am impressed. I’ve seen a few Lucid running around the Bay Area. Can’t wait to see more. Best of luck Peter. It’s nice, particularly these days to see a CEO that respects his team and customers.

These Lucid tech talks are brilliant. I truly hope that Lucid survives this stage of their growth. They will need to make a less expensive EV that includes all these technical innovations. I can buy nearly three Model S Plaids for one Sapphire with minimal advantage. I'd rather own the Sapphire but can't afford it. Having the ability to manufacture the Plaid so efficiently is an upshot and perhaps a benefit of an imperfect engineering solution. In contrast, the Lucid team is focusing on technical perfection with the downsides of cost. Hopefully, their technical innovations will include cost efficiencies in the near future.

Oh my god WOW!!!! This has to be the best video i have ever seen about electric motors i really loved that!! It is sad that this technology in not appreciated enough and it is not already mainstream, imagine have a collaboration with Tesla it will be huge! At the same time i realize much better how many things we can still improve about electric motors! Extiting video thank you from Italy!! 🇮🇹

Please god let this company make it. It's so rare to have engineering knowledge at the C suite level like this. This company is one tracked in their thinking and execution (in a good way). Amazing! Hope to have a Lucid at some point.

Sir you had missed something , you are using 900V system rather than traditional 300-400V system which already cuts down current to half and I²R losses to 1/4 , more than 75% reduction in heat losses.
