I only listen to vintage groups and singers and classical/opera singers, so the stuff today is an assault on my ears ( well except Sigur Ros- they are in a class of their own!)

OldDogNewTrick, how your words have reminded me of those days...as a teenager I was" into cars" and all that went with it. I bought a 1957 Chevy BelAire with a "Four Pack";......meaning it had a 4 barreled carburetor, dual exhausts and a Powerglide transmission...aka; "Powerslide!" Of course it only had an AM radio which really didn't have much range...but that didn't matter since it would pick-up all the Local Rock & Roll stations....music by Buddy Holly, Elvis, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets......on and on!

I grew up as an intense rock and roll fan, addicted to all the original Founding Fathers because of my very hip babysitter, and then the Beatles took over my life. But at every step, The Platters and the Drifters crept into my DNA. Tony Williams might just be the greatest, most awe inspiring male vocalist of my lifetime. And whether the 8 year old boy or the 67 year old man, this song just leaves me with my jaw hanging open. I was SO lucky to be born when I was.

Dont mean to argue but Tony Williams was a parking lot attendant in LA when Buck Ram took him under his wing and trained his voice, and brought him onto the Platters.. He also sang in church but there is no documentation of him being an opera singer. If there is, Id love to see it. He's my favorite singer, by the way,
@knightrider17557 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I do remember awhile back someone suggesting that when he left the group in 1960 that he went off to study classical musical. Not sure how accurate that is. But it is uniformly acknowledged in most circles that he was a parking lot attendant when Ram recruited him.
@Awf.lately5 жыл бұрын
@@hillcresthiker he's my grandfather and no he was not a trained singer. however; buck did come across him in a parking lot because him and others would sing all the time... and buck loved his voice. but yes, definitely an amazing singer.. not saying that because i'm his kid's kid. =)

All these years later, they can still summarized in one word: talent. Tony Williams was an outstanding lead, and Buck Ram was extraordinary as writer, arranger and manager. Herb Reed, the bass, kept the group going for decades. Didn't realize he was 5' 10", the others being relatively tall, until they appeared on American Bandstand.
