Nettles: I think she stands in for the children of the forest and shows us that they have dragon blood. It fits with my wider theory that there had been a war between greens (greenseers) and blacks (dragonlords) in the past and the greens needed a dragon of their own so they "crowned" one dragonlord as green king and had him make many babies to spread the dragon connection (Garth legend related). This also fits the many sorta-democratic crowning rituals on Planetos and, in my opinion, even the crowning of Aegon II, who didn't really want to be king and had his crowning be decided for him by the green council without his input (completely opposite of Maegor's usurpation). The Cannibal: The scene with Corless probably just makes the dragon a sea snake symbolically. This might relate to the first idea if we ever find out that prominent sea dragons eat other dragons or fight on the side of greenseers (Naga?).

Your comparison of the Greens/Blacks fits with the themes GRRM has in his writings and the theme of history repeating just with different faces. Hotd we're getting the human version of blacks vs greens but I 100% can see the ancient version being between children and dragons. And the wights came along and messed up both sides 😮

I would love to see Deep Ones much more closely but I think it's too much of a distraction - there's too much else going on! And like many things they help the reader understand the Others, as a parallel. Although as David and Tim are showing, they have a lot going on in their own right! That is something I hadn’t thought about. The phrase of “ Targaryen dragons bred for war” is interesting because maybe other families had dragons bred for other activities? So dragons had like a caste system like ones for war and then others for road building and like different sectors

I wonder if the ancient Starks knew their magic bloodline wasnt going to be enough to defeat what was coming down the line (the north remembers) and thats why they collected as Tim said, all the magical power ups with the marrying of other powerful family I feel like we all know the North forgot to remember sometbing and specifically, the Starks and i think we know the mixing of magical bloodline wouldnt be done by GRRM randomly and haphazardly. idk about the 'any valyrian can ride a dragon' theory. house velaryon had been around a long time, but no riders till they marry with targaryens. definitely something more magical going on, especially when considering Dany's fire proof body.

Velaryons never rode dragons, but I can totally see the family using them for navigation and exploration purposes. Maybe Cannibal and others come from those dragons.

Regarding the original Valerians and how they made the first dragon bonds, don't forget that another way to forge the bond is to have a human child sleep with a dragon's egg. It's possible that the Valerians used sheep gifts and Pavlovian training to get close to the dragons, and then stole an egg or two to put in their babies' cradles (how they knew to do that is an interesting question...). After all, we know that dragons aren't particularly protective of their eggs because we see multiple instances of people (Daemon, dragon keepers) taking them away. They seem to be more reptilian in this respect: lay the eggs in a protective 'hot mound' (like a crocodile) and then walk away. Maybe when those dragon-bonded children had grown up, led their lives and grown old, they would then be blood-magic sacrificed so that their souls could live forever in their dragons, in a process analagous to a skin-changer's 'second life'.

Perhaps most of the warrior bloodline dragons are "knightly dragons" or bodyguards to their riders, but Cannibal (and perhaps Nanna) sre war dragon, fhe full WMD and cannot be bound EXCEPT by a warrior rider (which is why the dragon keepers couldnt bind Cannibal).

A lot of things like that can be really helpful. I like getting valerian roots and making really earthy "tea" out of it. It's an acquired taste and some come to appreciate the bitterness. The key is to add a lot of dark honey to it. Buckwheat honey is good once it melts a bit

I don't often leave comments but wanted to say what a great stream! I love how seriously and closely David Lightbringer reads GRRM's text. But I often chafe about how sure he and Tim are that D&D are the worst villains in the history of villains (for ruining their favorite show!!). Thanks, Tony, for bringing some realism about the show to this channel. Also, PS, Tim, there's lots of great beer in the Central time zone. I usually love Tim, but Modelo? and PBR isn't a frat boy drink, or it wasn't in the late 90s when I was in college. That was Natty Ice. Or the bar where I worked sold the frat guys Coors, Miller, and Bud Light. PBR got sabotaged by the hipsters later, but it was for poor working people back then. Anyway, great work and thank you for all your thoughtful insight David, Tim, and Tony.

i agree with you dave about the velaryon theory and the cannibal! been thinking about it since i first read fire and blood in 2019. to elaborate more on my thoughts is cannibal coming to corlys’ funeral means that cannibal was meant/felt a kinship for him especially since addam and alyn are def corlys’ bastards and not laenor’s which means addam got the dragon riding genes from corlys! and we know house velaryon comes from valyria as well and might have the blood of the dragon themselves.

Hi David! I have a question: what do you think the correlation is between greenseer-raven connections and dragon-rider bonds? Do dead dragon riders live on in their dragons the same way the singers live in the ravens? It would be a cool explanation to why Vhagar dies along with Caraxes instead of defeating him. They fought with tooth and claw, the way it’s said they do on the ground, instead of burning each other senseless the way they do when they fly. Could it be that they fought so conservatively because Laena (supposedly in Vhagar) knew the only way out was to die together? Or did old Balerion take Aerea to Valyria and get injured because Aegon I or some other Valyrian in there wanted him to die at home?

Loved this livestream even on rewatch...but the bittersweet taste I have about TWOW lingers in me. The problem I see with the book is quality, not quantity. What I mean is that GRRM has probably rewritten Winds of Winter three or four times. And it doesn't end up looking the way he would like. That's why it's taking so long to come out, there must be a deep structural problem that prevents it from being 'perfect' as he would like. He may surely have internal coherence problems that seem impossible to solve. The devil is in the details, he may have one or more imps blocking his path, leaving him stuck. I believe one of them is the long journey for Daenerys from Mereen to the Wall/Heart of Winter. I'm thinking of his initial idea of ​​the five-year time jump between A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons; an idea that he ultimately discarded and forced him to divide A Dance with Dragons into two books... I think that by not making that time jump, he ended up weighing down The Winds of Winter. Although the act of not doing the time jump left us with memorable moments.The work advances at two speeds, there are plots that move very quickly and others that must necessarily be developed more to be credible (for example the growth of Daenerys' dragons, learning processes of Arya, Sam and Bran, etc.). I think we will get aemond admitting he lost control to aegon after hes burned OR two helaena because she "cant" tell anyone and he does care for her. I wouldn't be surprised if he tells both at one point. Privately i think the set it up that he will be very introspective and even a tad remorseful when he realizes this game of war....isnt the game he thought it was and no one is safe. Again he cares for he, so seeing his inability to control Nana vaghar cause her such anguish, I'd almost bet he admits it to her. I absolutely love this episode and definitely look forward to the Winds of Winter: Kings Landing predictions episode. I hate to say this though, especially as someone who use to say “WHEN GRRM finishes WoW”, but I’m starting to doubt more and more that he will finish. I’m not saying that because of his age. I’m saying it because he keeps announcing these side projects he’s involved in that distracts him from WoW. If he’s not going to finish, I just wish he would tell us.
