If Viserys had a head for politics he'd have made sure to be very close to Rhaenyra, since he doesn't have a dragon and as his daughter she's his most powerful and loyal ally. Instead, he keeps alianating all of his dragonriders. That's one of the major reasons why the war happened at all. Viserys and Daemon's relationship wasn't as strong as it should've been, Viserys further alienated the Velaryons and didn't protect Rhaenyra. At the same time, he went on to make a whole new batch of dragonriders with Alicent, and then proceeded to alienated them as well. And when he finally tried to mend the Targaryen-Velaryon relationship through Rhaenyra's marriege to Laenor, he agravated the situation instead by not protecting Rhaenyra's claim well enough. At this point, war was bound to happen eventually.

I was thinking that Vhagar was enormous for her age, but it makes sense that she's having a wild life at this point. We all know that a dragon is not a slave and is meant to live freely, so that is also a reason Vhagar is so huge, not only for her age but also her lifestyle in this last maybe 4 years. It makes sense just as Drogon that she's more dangerous than those dragons living on the dragonpit and/or driftmark/dragonstone! That old lady is a veteran of war and a independent female!

I like to think with all the talk of 2nd sons, Rhaenyra is somewhat of a 2nd son; in a sense she is only named heir when there is not a proper first born son of Viserys. And her taking her dragon to dragonstone is a callback to Daemon talking about Otto (and somewhat himself) when he said he was a 2nd son who has nothing unless he takes it himself

Regarding the talk about Vhagar, I thought it was interesting to know that Vhagar was just out and about somewhere in the world. I don't know why but I never thought of the dragons flying wherever on their own lol Also, I didn't realize that Dragonstone Castle was built on a volcano; very cool, and coupled w/ Viscerys' books about Old Valyria I can't help but think that the Targaryens could do actual blood magic if they got it right

We all know the ancient Valyrians practised blood sacrifice! I’m looking forward to your next videos!

I am at least 50% certain that they broke the piece at the wing for precisely the reason you mentioned. They could have gone for the neck (entirely different symbolism), or tail, or just had it shatter, but they chose the wing. It could have just been for the sake of practicality, but everyone who is working on this project understands that they are telling a story and will want to insert their own intentionality into their contributions.

Nice video, I like your interpretation of the sun in the background during the dragonstone scene, but I think the sun symbolizes something else here, we were specifically told that that egg came from DREAMFYRE, so having the SUN in the background is pretty big clue that, that is the same egg which hatches SUNFYRE, also considering this egg was meant for rhaenyra's first brother who died, this egg will eventually go to her first half brother ageon who was the rider of SUNFYRE, also it's increadibly poetic how the dragon egg that rhaenyra is trying to get back is the same dragon that eventually plays a big part in her fate.

Another thing I liked about the scene with Laena asking Viserys about Vhagar was that, while she was excited to know what it was like to ride Balerion, Viserys didn't reply with any excitement or description of that aspect, but instead commented on the dragon's historical significance - yet another moment that helps define his character and his way of thinking.

Thanks for the shout out! As you know, in the books the Dragonkeepers look different but I really love the more grounded rugged look they have in the show. It makes sense that they would be more rugged as oppose to fully armed knights. Unrelated, I realized that I would be part of the Black faction. I get the Great Council and precedent but I also think the Targs missed an opportunity to expand the doctrine of Exceptionalism. Even though Jaehaerys was alittle sexist himself I find it odd that no one asserted the rights of Targ ruling queens. Especially, since both Rhaeny and Visenya ruled in their own right. If I were the Targs (thinking of you Alysanna) I would have worked with Barth to change the histories so that the first ruling three Targs would have been styled "The Conquerors" (not just Aegon) as all three conquered Westeros with collective and individual actions. I would have named it something cool like the Prerogative of the Dragon which derives its authority from the rights and privileges of conquest and in line with the nature of valyrian Exceptionalism. I know GRRM based alot of this on medieval Europe but the middle ages have alot of complex, structured, bureaucracies. As a matter of fact several of the most powerful medieval empires (looking at you Byzantine Empire) were extremely well organized and structured. I feel like Aegon was in a rush to unite the 7 kingdoms (which he and his sisters did in 3 years) but didn't do much to organize it afterwards.

Two great set up and character building episodes before episode 3 when things really seem to kick into gear. I’ve seen some people say it’s boring but it’s doing exactly what peak GoT did and we loved them first 4 seasons and hated the last 4 when they went more Hollywood. I think it’s because most people watched those first 4 seasons later on into GoTs runtime or during lockdown when you could just binge through them in one and so the slower episodes didn’t seem so slow when you had an episode 9 coming up in the same day. But the weekly episode format is better than all of them in one so I’m glad and I hope people are mature enough to stick with it especially as we know how it ends.

Hey, David; I've just noted something! Have you noticed that the Iron Throne and the Tree Cave of the 3-eyed raven look similar in terms of these twigs/tentacles/branch kind of visual effect? Sort of giving this vibe of an "as above, so below" type of appeal; meaning that a Targaryn shall sit upon the Throne (above) that you, and the Throne (below) that you don't see. I could be out of my got-damn mind, but it does strike an interesting detail.
@curtiswfranks2 жыл бұрын
About the wound which never heals: You mentioned the Fisher King, so you of course know this, but the Fisher King also has a wound which never heals. It is said to be in or below the abdomen, depending on the telling, and often is interpreted to be in the groin (via euphemism.). This obviously has symbolic implications for virility and fertility. While Viserys' wound is on his back, perhaps indicating a looming danger which he does not see, I think that the connections to the Fisher King's wound are impossible to ignore. Ironically, though, at least some of the trouble caused by him is due to his fertility (not lack thereof) arguably coupled with an insufficient virility. (Daemon might be a mirror character in the show: He is hyper-masculine in some senses but is speculated by fans to have fertility problems. If so, then it is almost as if their average would have made the perfect ruler). I also think that we need to consider the (in my opinion somewhat misogynistic) ephemisms of the never healing wound referring to female reproductive organs due to the vulva/vagina looking like an open wound in some sense and bleeding monthly. The first episode had a lot of emphasis on sexual symbolism (shape of the tourney arena, Alicent giving her favor, etc.) and, obviously, the 'female role' in reproduction. Even the misogyny of the phrase really ties into the themes of the series. Importantly, if Baelon had lived, then most of the future conflict in this show would have been put to bed. Thus, both Viserys and Aemma have 'never healing wounds' which, through reproduction, will end up killing them or spelling disaster for the realm. The difference, of course, is that Aemma did nothing wrong and was, in fact, doing her supposed duty to the best of her capacity, and beyond. Viserys is trying, but he is making grave mistakes.

Daemons "occupation of Dragonestone" is an affront to Rhaenyras claim to being the heir to the Iron Throne. Dragonstone is considered the seat for the heir, especially in the minds of the citizens. He claims to be taking a second wife in the tradition of old Valyria, he steals the dragon egg chosen by Rhaenyra for her dead brother and claims to be placing it in the crib with his soon to be child. Daemons intent was to provoke Rhaenyra into visiting him. He is fully aware his brother most likely won't come, be it from cowardice or advisement from Otto. If in episode one, Daemons spying on the small council when Otto recommends Rhaenyra as heir, is symbolic of him knowing the "secret passages" of the Red Keep. Daemon would be fully aware of what is happening in KL in current time and likely has suspicions of a Viserys/Alicent marriage. It was all a mummers farce with the intent to open Rhaenyras eyes to defend her claim knowing Otto is likely plotting against it behind the scenes. Otto believes he can control the heir and that is why he recommends Rhaenyra. This play Daemon put on, shows Daemon that Rhaenyra has no desire to being controlled by anyone and is willing to risk her life for it. The bonus, Rhaenyras looks the part of a proper heir resolving the situation and gains confidence in her ability to lead own way.

If we're discussing foreshadowing, how about Rhaenyra's behavior when selecting the new member of the Kingsguard? She's spent her entire life at court and still must be reminded to thank people for their service. Nor did she interview all of the candidates, of which there were only about 7. It's not that her reason for selecting Ser Criston was unsound, it's that she can't be bothered with basic courtesy or to treat the other candidates respectfully.

So far I haven't seen anyone call this so I'm calling this now before the episode airs- I think Alicent and Rhaenyra had some romantic tension, I could be looking too deep into their scenes together, but their scenes seem a little more intimate for being just good friends(in a "tension" kind of way), and I think that's part of why Rhaenyra felt extra betrayed.(it's not just her friend, it's someone she was developing some romantic feelings for). Rhaenyra mentioned breaking the wheel, I wouldn't be surprised if she also had in mind being queen and queen with Alicent...tho yes, I'm aware that in this system biological heirs are important, so it wouldn't quite work if there were two queens, and Rhaenyra might not be that drastic in her wanting to change things and further upset the rest of the weastros.... But still- I wouldn't be surprised(or rather- I would be, but I'd feel there was some hidden set-up), if it is revealed that Rhaenyra had some feeling for Alicent (I think it would definitely deepen the complexity of this situation, in a way that seems fitting for the show.)

You and the critical drinker should do a review of GoT together....and it would be epic, both with the dark glasses

@DavidLightbringer In the art work behind Rhaenys there’s a depiction of a woman being intimate with a man/serpent. I wonder if it’s a clue to the Targaryen DNA.

Caraxes should have eaten Otto and Ser Crispin. Would have saved them from a lot of future problems.

Laena is so sweet it's just such a shame she dies young, she has a care for the Dragons, especially outcasts like Vhagar that the rest of the world seems to not give a dam about

Can they give us a twist we don't see coming? You have to wonder with the series ending with the Others so far away if they have something magical or lore wise. Great vid david!

I mean I think they’re doing great. The letter from Daemon dropped like a bomb. And Mysaria not knowing his plans was a surprise.

I could just imagine some ancient blood magic adepts in old Essos seeing an endless Long Night decided that only dragon fire could prevent that, so they cast a spell which led to the Targaryen Dynasty. That knowledge and those practitioners still exist in Asshai and the Shadow Lands I believe.

I have a question: I’m reading fire and blood and I’ve gotten to the part where Alysanne urges Jaehaerys to enact laws that would protect widows and etc. but in addition to that law he also established one that forbade men from disinheriting their children from their first wife in favor of their children from a second wife. Would that law not also apply to Viserys when he names Rhaenyra heir? If he were to change the succession in favor for Aegon. I hope that’s not a stupid question
@DavidLightbringer2 жыл бұрын
No that’s a good question actually. It might only refer to sons, but it’s still an interesting point!
