I find there's so many people on KZbin covering the tv show, you end up having to sift through a lot of videos that have the same content to find the little gems like this channel. I do love the show and am glad it introduced me to the series, but the history, lore, symbolism and mystery is what I find most fascinating about it all. Man, revisiting this video has me more and more convinced Lightbringer was absolutely not an actual sword. Its tuff tho because the layers of symbolism are so deep. Was Lightbringer the first dragon? Or was it the comet? Was the comet Lightbringer and the meteors the dragons? Then what on earth is the origin of dragons, and where do the Others fit in? My brain hurts.

Way late to this, but that's definitely what I was getting as well. That there was never a Lightbringer, it was just the comet being described, again, as a bloody sword, and the 'scream' being the sound of the impact with the moon or...I dunno, would a comet passing that close be audible? Either way, it sounds like the myths coming together means the comets return will hit the (other?) moon, cracking it too and showering the earth with more meteors, causing the second Long Night. No Nissa Nissa or Lightbringer, just a comet and moon impact and a reoccurring astrological event

Some crazy shit must have happened in our sky back in thw day according to Titanomachy and similar stories (the war between the Aesir and the Vanir etc). And I'm not convinced Lightbringer is a true comet, and not a relic from Planetos's advanced pre-interegnum past.

An actual astronomical event being at the root of many of the myths grounds the story in a brilliant way. (And is reminiscent of our own history. i.e. Pompeii with Vesuvius being the home of Hephetes) Wasn't sure where to ask this question, so I'll just do it here... Have you read Preston Jacob's series called, "genetics of dragons and war"? It grounds the Targareyn ability to hatch & ride dragons in basic Mendelian genetics. It also hypothesizes that a greenseer gene could be substituted for a "dragon" gene, explaining the importance of Lyanna's Stark.

I think Nissa Nissa and Lightbringer also take a lot from Michael Moorcock's Elric novels, a huge inspiration for ASOIAF. Spoilers for the Elric novels to follow. The eponymous Elric wields a magic black sword named Stormbringer that is sentient (and most definitely the real entity in charge rather than Elric) and devours the blood and souls of its victims, like Lightbringer is said to do with Nissa Nissa. Stormbringer causes Elric to kill his first love, Cymoril, in a blind rage, and Elric also uses the sword to mercy kill his second love and eventual wife Zarozinia after she's been turned into a giant worm by a sorceror. Now Stormbringer was already powerful before it was used to kill its wielder's loves, but I think it's still important. Elric's more or less a doomed hero who's destined to be a magnet for tragedy and death, which probably means bad things for any reborn Azor Ahai if the Elric parallels hold. (Look at how Martin's outright Elric ripoff character, Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers, turned out. Never gained his love's heart and wound up sent to the Wall and stuck in a tree.) There's more Elric influence in the novels, like the Dragon Lords and the focus on the duel between Chaos and Order rather than good and evil and so on (Martin is a HUGE fan of the books), but Stormbringer and the killing of its wielder's loves are the important bit here.

I've come back to your videos and essays and just wanted to make the Arthurian connection. Geoffrey of Monmouth explains that Uther Pendragon was named because of a comet in the shape of a dragon that appeared in the sky before a battle with the Saxons in which his brother Aurelius dies and the dragon is a sign of Aurelius' death and Uther's accession. This is so similar to the dragons as comets, in your theory.

Well, about two and half years ago I was in my garage, preparing to move, and it occurred to me that dragons coming from the moon are probably meteors, and that meteors would be a good backbone for a Long Night type event. A few months after that, I was hanging out on Westeros.org writing progressively longer theory essays, then I made my own blog... essays grew longer... and so I decided to podcast to make them easier to consume. Now here I am with a short (for me) video to make the main ideas more accessible, so they can work their way around the internets and find wonderful folks like yourself! It was meant to be! ;)

The fact that Melisandre believes Azhor Ahai was born on Dragonstone to wake dragons and does not consider the last living Targaryen who was actually born on Dragonstone and doesn't just live there is really odd to me. She must know of her existence, even though she obviously does not know of her dragons.

Hey LML, i just wanted to add some things about what you said about quetzalcoatl. In Aztec mythology, Quetz has a twin brother named Xoxtol. His titles include: "Xolotl, the Twin, the Shapeshifter, Venus as the Evening Star, the Lord of the West" a polar opposite to Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent, Precious Twin, Venus as the Morning Star). The day and night respectively in this mythos, as Xoltotl guides the sun through the underworld ever night. The duality of these two is something I've always found interesting, and especially being that their titles relate to Venus. I thought I would add a little tidbit in there for you. Might be something else to explore. And as a side note there is a third aztec god called Tezcatlipoca "the Smoking Mirror, Enemy of Both sides, Night wind.." Him and Quetzalcoatl created the world, bringing together polar opposites.

I'm probably late on this one but Dany and Drogo call each other 'sun and stars' and 'moon of my life'. Their child died and according to Dothraki myth went to ride in the sky as part of a star-khalessar, and he was prophesied to be the 'stallion that mounts the world'. So the child of the sun and the moon will be a star that leads a sky-horde that 'mounts' the world.

I'm starting to believe that the Long Night was in a sense a War of the Titans. Many gods, real gods, fighting over different realms. The River Ash, which flows through Asshai and the ancient city of Stygai, is IMO the River Styx. A border between the Realms of Men and the Underworld and the variant spelling for Styx is Stygian. It is known.

Hey LML quick question: I've been thinking of how Myth and Mythology is used to explain that which we cannot in today's world (ie East Asian dragons causing tsunamis etc). But in this world of Ice and Fire there are magical and unearthly things like Dragons. How could there be both living breathing dragons AND a symbolical story explaining astronomical events? Thanks!

Basically a symbol of birth and rebirth, exactly. Thematically it’s home, but of course she can’t go home. Her mission is to become the dragon and make a safe place for other people, I would say. Think of the dream where she throws open the red door and sprouts wings, becoming the dragon

If it means she grew up at and calls the mouth of the dragon home, could that mean that though she grew up in bravos as a small child, the red door is what she remembers (somehow) from dragonstone? that doesnt seem likely, but the entire idea of the roar or mouth of the dragon would seem to allude to either a deeper truth about Bravos, or perhaps even (and i know this is overdone and banal) growing up somewhere else. I also am curious about how different you think the bond between a dragon and dragonrider is from a warg and their animal. It sounds as though it is somewhat similar, except its almost like the dragon is warging into the human or a bit of each into each other because they can only ride a single dragon at a time, whereas a warg has tons possibilities to build a managerie. If this is the case, could the red door or other recurring symbols from dani's dream have something to do with a different perspective or some sort of dragon-net (i mean if wargs are connected to the old gods and prophecy, you would think that the dragon-dragonrider connection is something similar, an indication of something larger). I know this is pretty tangential, but the idea of the symbolism thats ascribed to the red door in this video set me down thinking on this path. Finally, do you know of anyone in the lore that is both a dragonrider and warg? or is it exclusively one or the other up to this point?

I think there's a glimmering of a point here, but I had to laugh at some of the stretches you made, like Nissa Nissa and the word Nisse, implying her to be a helpful elf. It's akin to saying Arya sounds a bit like Araya, and he's in the band Slayer, famous in part for the song Raining Blood, so her name hints at bloodbaths and murder. Absolutely! It implies they are mere ants to be lapped up by your long, raspy tongue. It also reminds me of a great scene in ADWD which just happens to foreshadow Dany slaying the Others at the Wall: "The next morning she woke stiff and sore and aching, with ants crawling on her arms and legs and face. Dany, our moon maiden, who recently wandered too close to the sun, was scalded by the fire from her dragon, causing her silverish-moon colored hair to be burned away, leaving ants (red ants, we later learn, like fire ants) crawling down her neck and back...see where I'm going with this?
