I still don't know how she didn't rise to greater heights in film, she was really talented, beautiful, could dance well, could slink around the stage well, and had nice legs. In those days, with those attributes, she should have become an A-lister. Almost nobody actually sang for their parts, so it couldn't have anything to do with that.

Actually there is a Hollywood rumor that she went out with a famous director or producer (his name is out there) who was married with children. When he wanted to leave his wife and marry her, she broke it off. He was in a huff and somehow his wife found out about their liaison and between the two of them Lucille Ball was blackballed from getting A List parts. If I were the wife I would have concentrated more on my cheating husband - rather than his mistress who broke it off when he wanted to leave and marry someone else.

Lucille was real-life friends with Van Johnson and you can see him in some of Lucy and Desi's home movies that Lucie has shown in retrospectives about their lives.
