I honestly don’t know how a person can sing this beautiful, haunting song about such a terrible loss without just falling apart. And Lucinda sings it apparently without any anger. Her explicit focus is entirely on the loved one who left. The music is beautiful, the lyrics tender and loving, and I can barely stand listening to it because of the hidden agony.

@@ventedvoice for a different perspective on love from Lucinda, listen to Essence. If this only scares you a little, that should do the trick. This live version is my favorite, mostly because of Doug Pettibone’s fantastic guitar playing and use of fuzz, etc. but the lyrics are amazing - as always. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHzHZIxjltOFoq8

My mom left just 6 months ago. I feel this music as rejoicing in her life. I had the privilege to care for her preceding her death and now restoring her home. These are all gifts to me from her. I am grateful she called me home for her last days.

It's wonderful to see Lucinda here, in her prime. I was so excited to see Lucinda at the Byron Bluesfest in 2023. But I think it's fair to say she was really struggling with her voice, following her health problems. But nothing will take away what she had 🤩

I first heard Emmylou Harris's cover of this in 2002 while visiting my father in SF. he was in his bed. i was sleeping on the floor of his one room apartment filled with chameleons, leopard geckos, parrots, and other wildlife. he was 2 years clean and sober. when i saw him before in 98 i thought for sure id never see him again. this is song is beautiful. i know Lucinda from Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. All he really lost when he left this world was my company, my jokes and smokes and subway tokens, and the look in my eye looking up to him for guidance in this (sweet old) world.

Had no idea what this song would be about. It touched on many thoughts I've had, in my recent state of mind. My lovely daughter died in early November - presumably not by suicide, but possibly due to her choice to continue to take Adderall, to which she was addicted, & occasionally Lamotrigine, which badly affected her sleep, & may have caused her to black out & fall to the floor, unconscious, about a year ago. When she took that 2nd drug, she had scary sleep apnea, snored horribly, & moaned with each exhalation, which she was too conked out to be aware of. Drugs like these are prescribed liberally, which I feel is a mistake & irresponsible. When I read the side effects, I sure wished she'd taken natural approaches instead, to deal with anxiety. She had so much potential. Tears are still rolling down my face. I lost my best friend ever & wish I'd been able to intervene & steer her away from such potent, destructive, lab created drugs. Even if they didn't cause her death directly, they do damage the heart, so, may have been the cause . She had just turned 33 yrs old...days before, and I still don't know why she died. Many prescribed drugs - if you read the side affects, make people more prone to suicide. Many troops are prescribed strong, addictive drugs & are killing themselves. Most of the mass shooters in the US were on psychiatric drugs which may have moved them to become murders, & yes...this side affect is also among the symptoms listed. I keep on recalling things we we'd talked of doing together, & had put off. It seemed we had plenty of time ahead...She had so much creative talent, & was wonderfully witty. Her friends are missing her, too...It hurts to think of all the things she never got to do. I am deeply grateful for the time we had. She was a gentle soul...She would've loved this song too.

Beautiful, melancholy song sung by the composer herself. Love, love the cover by Gram Parsons with Emmylou Harris (with Lucinda singing background vocals).
@patricias51224 жыл бұрын
Thank you; there is a lot of misinformation about the author of this song. One person, in particular, keeps posting that it was Emmy Lou Harris. E.L.H. sings it, beautifully, but Lucinda Williams wrote this song, in homage to the brilliant young American poet, Frank Stanford, who shot himself in '79.
@crazyarms4 жыл бұрын
patricia S Thank you for this information, I knew this was a Lucinda Williams song, I have loved her music for a while now, that it was about Frank Stanford I did not know, and do not know his writings, but it does figure, giving that Lucinda’s father was a poet and writer. I will investigate further, best wishes, Rob.
@fancifulfilly4 жыл бұрын
Emmylou did cover this beautiful and sorrowful song herself, but It wasn't humanly possible for Gram Parsons to have done so with her. He left this world himself in 1973, and Lucinda released this song first in 1992, so it was likely written shortly before that; in any case, many years after Gram Parsons's death. It is pretty likely though, that Emmylou chose to cover it in memory of the tragic loss of Gram.
