The cat in the beginning is called a maneki neko (招き猫) which translates to "beckoning cat" but is often referred to as "lucky cat" or "welcoming cat". I heard that they are usually placed in entrance ways to welcome people inside. I have also seen them outside of some Japanese restaurants and stores. In America when we want to tell someone to come towards us or motion "come here" we move our hands with our palms upwards towards ourselves. But in Japan they motion their hands with their palms facing down, which I think is what the maneki neko is symbolizing. Because while many of the cats are shown in the same pose as the girl's cat in the film, there are also some figures that are battery powered and make the cat's arm move up and down, and because the paw is also facing palm down I think it means that the cat is telling people to "come here" or "come on in!" as a way to welcome people. I might be wrong, so please feel free to correct me if anything I said doesn't seem right.
