It looks like the documentation for this SoM has been greatly improved since Gierling made his video. Seems like a reasonable option for building a cyberdeck or something similar.

Yeah in the last 6 months they've REALLY fleshed it out. The team is pretty much non-stop!

Nice. I did a double take when I saw the notification lol. Looks like this setup is working quite well. My friend runs a techie non-profit out of Arkansas focused on cyber security (I was a guest speaker at the conference in April and gave a talk about blockchain primitives). He likes to make badges, and this year he used 2 Waveshare products in the badge: the RP2040 Pi Zero and the 1.3" LCD hat, but also it was designed to work with a regular RPi Zero/W/2W. There was some funny business about the pins being different enough that the RP2040 Pi Zero had to be mounted baclwards/rotated 180° compared to the RPi Zero or something like that.

Hahah yeah I thought that might get you 😋 Oh very odd re the Waveshare product. I know they do sometimes have 180-degree variants. Eg some of the HATs I've used are designed to mount backwards. The one I have in-stock (ePaper) is actually one of those I think, and I have in my personal collection the normal orientation of it. The wiki just says something like "be ware of direction" hah

The biggest advantage RPi still have... you're not relying on the OEM to drip feed you compatible OS and kernel builds... when they feel like it... for however long they'll support it... Linux 4.19 says it all! Debian from 2022... Ubuntu from 2020... Why do I want to pay $100 to live with that?? The broadcom chips by far and away have the most FOSS kernel support and biggest third party OS and software support. 95% of people offering an IoT OS... they have a build for RPi that you can slap on to test out. That said some of the Rockchip SoCs (3588 and 3399?) have the best chance at catching up, they're getting some mainstream kernel driver support these days. But boy do they still have a long way to climb.

I guess it depends on your use case, though tbh I lack the imagination to figure out a scenario in which I would use this since my current focus is on building a mesh networking system with ESP32. Edit: it looks like the target audience for this product line is devs who want to make products with the CM4 embedded but at a lower price point for the performance.

Brother check out the Reborn os review video by Eta Prime for arm, particularly a rk3588 board. The linux (reborn) os has relatively good hardware acceleration, meaning actual Vulcan support and other apis as well. So the gpu can finally be properly utilised. Although I'm not quite sure if it (gpu driver) gives full performance, it does so relatively well as seen in the video by eta prime.

Yeah you're absolutely not wrong at all. That's the one thing that others are aiming to get to. The 3588 is looking very popular, same as the RV1108 over 1103/1106. Only time will tell I guess!
@PlatimaTinkers

@@yasirrakhurrafat1142 Yeah RebornOS is very interesting, but their ARM support is very new and actually a bit broken right now. It primarily targets RPi, so not a huge use here, and the only two other variants are the Rock5B and OPi5 Github repos. Those are RK3588 though not RK3566, so very different kettle of fish. Working on an updated image myself right now, as a newer kernel would allow a more recent Mesa build, which should have Panfork working nicely. I did it on my Rock 3 and Zero 3 previously, as is running next to me now 😊

Was curious if you make more from YT adsense or from the shop. :)
@PlatimaTinkers
@PlatimaTinkers 3 ай бұрын
Not even close. Yt pays something really sht like 6c per 1000 views. I think maybe I get paid $150 every few months from AdSense, but I don't really pay attention to it. The sponsorships and the shop at what make the income, but personally I've never taken any income from either - currently still just building out stock, branding, etc.
@Crftbt

@@PlatimaTinkers that AdSense rate doesn't sound great. The sponsorships bring in more than the shop? Wondering if you've considered having your own boards made. :)
@PlatimaTinkers
@PlatimaTinkers 3 ай бұрын
@@Crftbt it's actually a pretty good rate. One of my mates gets less and his channel is way bigger. I've turned off ads on most of my videos though as I don't need the money and Yt can eat a fat one IMHO. Comparing the sponsorship revenue and the shop revenue is pretty difficult. Depends if you're talking about gross or net, and both vary based on how much time I put in. As it is, I do this for fun and make no money from it, but one day when I need it I may start taking income from this entity. As far as boards go, I do make my own. Some of the products on my shop are my own, and I have two new boards that shipped out from PCBWay all assembled last week that I'll be doing videos on in coming weeks. Again, the capital required to get good production costs on boards, along with the time it takes to design them, makes them not hugely viable for my limited scope or demographic. I make the boards/products that I personally want to use, and then I sell the rest 😅

@@Crftbt Yeah same haha. Hoping it works. I really enjoy PCB design, as I think it combines my history/passion for both electronics and programming. Was just an idea I had laying in bed medicated and list listening to a podcast one night, that when I googled I couldn't find had been made! Thanks for your positive words and support too - appreciated.

Looks pretty awesome! The included STM8 is a nice treat for development. If they send me one I'll definitely try it out and make a video about it. Linux 5.4 or 5.15 kernel is nice too. 6 would be better, but beggars can't be choosers 😅
