Super Yacht Captain

Күн бұрын

We start a list of the first 5 perks of working on a luxury super yacht. There are many more perks for the crew but we think these are the ones that we appreciate the most.
Captain Tristan Mortlock is an award winning Super Yacht Captain with over 15 years experience. He started his yachting career in his teens and now runs one of the most successful charter yachts in the world. Tristan is currently serving on Motor Yacht AWOL, a San Lorenzo SD122, built in 2009. AWOL is a multi award winning yacht and her crew take a lot of pride in their work.
Captain's Vlog is about educating interested parties on what happens onboard a Mega Yacht, Super Yacht and the yachting industry. To share the life of yacht crew and life at sea. The BIG shipyard refits, paint jobs and marine engineering works. To travel some of the worlds most beautiful destinations.
The first owner of the Super Yacht AWOL was non other than Mr Piero Ferrari himself. The wheel house still contains the original Captain's chair with the Ferrari emblem.

Truth is, you decide on your own reality. The crew quarters are small, but we keep it clean, organised and smelling good. Of course we SO appreciate being home in our double beds, but I love my cabin onboard. It's our space to relax so we make it personal. It's all about mind set. Hahaha, ironing and laundry is actually a part of the day that both myself and the second Stew enjoy most. We get to sit down, while working and enjoying music, singing or a movie on our phones. In the end, it's true that there are some horror stories about difficult guests and hard working conditions but when you have a Captain, Owner (of the yacht) and team that support your decisions on how to run your department, it's a win! I absolutely love my job, in or out the water! 🧜‍♀️

It was not offensive and I liked the laundry room, it looks cozy. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of guests, schedules, jobs and interaction, it's kind of like a hideaway where you can switch off for a bit and be with yourself. At least that's the feeling I got from that room.

I appreciate the fact that you promote your crew. The crew who do the laundry should be praised for doing a good job. I grew up in a laundry and appreciate the work to produce ironed sheets and clean laundry in a hot and humid environment especially in a tight space: two front-loading washers and two dryers as well as a mangle for the ironed bed sets. Professionalism on the crummy jobs as well as the glamorous duties comes through. Hard work creates the magic for the guests. I think you inspire your crew to do their best. Cheers.

When I was growing up as a kid, I was the oldest male followed by two sisters, during the mid-50'-60's in a middle class+ midwest suburb, everyone had a large rotary iron appliance that was called a "mangler" for ironing bed sheets, pillowcases, cloth napkins, some items of clothing such as pajamas, t-shirts etc. This was a regular routine chore done by the kids. We never gave it a thought, just something we had to do like the dishes, pots and pans, washing the kitchen and bathroom floors, vacuuming, cutting the grass (using, of course, a hand pushed lawn mower), gardening "grunt-work" weeding and loosening soil for my mother to be able to insert the plants etc from endless flats of flowers. It was normal to sleep on ironed sheets in ironed pajamas. Those were the days......

Ah the crew life brings back memories... Years ago I worked at a vacation resort on a small island over summers, the development of the crew's rapport was not unlike that shown here. Its been a long time since, but I do miss the close relationships the situation fostered. OTOH I don't miss the personal drama that sometimes unfolded too.. there were a few occasions where personalities overflowed and people were fired and departed the island. The chef also cooked for us; we ate before the guests and had somewhat limited menu in comparison but the crew mess was always a welcome conclusion to the day. I ran the boats, ferrying guests on/off the island, distributing firewood, springwater and so on. The chambermaids took care of the guests towels and bedding, but we were on our own for our personal laundry lol. I also acted as the "engineer" also; running the systems; laundry, kitchen, water heating and so on every day. The cabins have individual propane fired hot water heaters, my job included humping the full tanks up off the supply boat and bringing down the empties... now that was a workout and a half twice a season! I like the commitment to fire safety. We maintained a set of fire pumps & hoses in case of emergency- on an island there is no fire departement. We never had a fire at the facility- thank goodness- but one summer a wildfire started up in the woods on the far shore. We scrambled a fire pump w/ hose- the pump worked but the hose was old and split on us. The owner immediately bought a new set of hoses and nozzles. I earned about 3 hours pay from the natural resources department for helping to fight a forest fire.. that was pretty cool. Always great to see the behind the scenes life- many thanks AWOL and crew!

Great perks and in some ways the crew enjoy the boat more than the owners lol. Re the laundry, I know you all do long hours when there are guests around so fresh laundry is a must and not much time to sort yourselves out for the next day. Reminds me of when I was a recruit in the army same scenario re long hours etc but all your kit had to be clean and ready for inspection anytime..but you had to do it all yourself without the aid of washers or dryers... sleep deprivation was a constant problem. PS I love your very appropriate front cover

When I grew up around age 10+ it was quite common for homes to have a roller iron. Us kids, my sister and I, shared doing the sheets, pillow cases, t-shirts, and as we gained age and skills we would add daily button-up shirts and pants etc. A normal expectation in the 50-60s. The roller iron was considerably larger than the one shown in the video. It was porcelain white and it would be rolled in on small wheels on the corners. It was a big deal to have a downstairs and upstairs phones (black, color wasn't available yet) back then. Microwave cooking was a new expensive way to cook and a dealer would come to your home to explain safe operation (my father was a MIT mechanical engineer and was able to bring home all kinds of electrical cooking aids to field test). Ah, the good "olden days".

@@SuperYachtCaptain I would check your facts before opening mouth. Years ago you could go fruit picking going from 1country to another. You had to be registered as working out of the country for a minimum of 6 months and be able to prove how much your earnt. Either by Wage slip or Check amounts being paid into your bank account. You could even take a holidays. However people got used to this and the U.K Govt suddenly changed it. Minimum time was at least a year and you now have to pay Income Tax on that money. Some people got caught out and had to repay because they were not working out of the country long enough because they also wanted Pre-booked before you left the U.K. The Chefs worst part of the day would be getting up. Normally first up to make Breakfast. Unless you have a Watch Duty. The advantage is that after cooking Dinner he may set up a tray of fruit or something. And other crew members do all the cleaning in the Galley. You would be surprised how many small restaurants the Chef has to Clean Down before they go home and small restaurants they may have to prep Breakfast ready to cook.

Great video as always Tristan!! How do you handle a member of the crew getting sick or has an emergency and needs to leave the vessel in the middle of the charter? Have you ever been sick or needed to leave in the middle of a charter? Thanks

Hi Tristan and Crew.. Great videos. Keep them up. Maybe you made a video on this already, if you did, please point me to the link. What are some of the requirements to be a steward or crew hand on your super yacht? How many languages does your crew speak? Does someone also have to accompany guests on land when you doc? What are average or starting salaries? These last points I only ask as I have a son who might be interested. I already sent him the link to your page. Regards. Stuart from Argentina.

.. like being away from home for months. Not able to be home for special events, like wedding (death of family member, is an event too, right?) cos you are working at some splendid beach front. .. like to be on beck and call the whole time, while on board. ( and some spoilt guests can be hard to please too). Unlike flight crew who can say my job's done when we landed. mabbe there's more, I donno.

Crew Perk #4 for all the crew except your Chief Steward (in this case) as someone still has to do it! 😉 🛳
