I don't remember too many people owning Bandai's original DVDs. RLJ Entertainment's (As their former name "Image Entertainment") marketing of Bandai's more obscure anime hadn't helped either. How Image/RLJ would market Bandai's niche anime was to make spots for it to place between runs of more mainstream anime, usually when Universal cablecasted their anime through Syfy, which was subject to regularly being programmed in graveyard hours before an abrupt end in summer 2011. Now most of the anime licensors that Universal/Syfy would sublicense their anime from are gone, save for two licensors (or three since TV Asahi directly supplied Tenjho Tenge), but that's something for another time.

There's a reason I still use a Konata avatar after all these years. Lucky Star is more than just my favorite anime series, it's the series that changed the course of my life all those years ago. From the very first episode, I was instantly captivated by the show's charm, wit, and humor. Finally, there was a series that actually got me and seemed to deal with issues that no other show at that time did. Not issues about saving the world, battling your inner demons, struggling with one's morality, or trying to rationalize the human condition, but "real" issues. Issues that mattered to me. Finding friends, going to school, cramming for tests, having fun, and living life. These characters were more real than any other characters I've ever seen anywhere else. You're not going to know the favorite foods of the characters in most other anime series unless it serves a purpose to the story. The brilliant thing about Lucky Star is... there is no story! Just like life itself! But more importantly, there were two things that Lucky Star did for me that I will always be thankful for. Firstly, it opened my eyes to the fact that there was a whole new world out there for me to explore. I didn't get any of the references, but it made me want to learn. What's this SOS Dan thing Konata keeps talking about? It made me feel like I was losing out by not watching these shows, and boy was I. From Haruhi to Code Geass, my anime repertoire grew from there. I found that anime was my "true calling," and I will always thank this series for leading me down the rabbit hole (in a good way). In addition to anime, it also introduced me to otaku culture. Lucky Star can be seen as a celebration of otaku culture (while still acknowledging and poking fun at its dark side from time to time). While I have gained a much deeper understanding and fuller picture of otaku culture over the next decade with shows (like NHK, Genshiken, Otaku no Video, etc...), books, and journals, Lucky Star is one of the few shows that truly has fun with it and makes it its own. Comiket? That was the first time I heard of it, and I was fascinated by the concept. Imagine my surprise when it was exactly the same as how it was portrayed in the anime when I finally managed to attend Comiket years later. I was living the anime. Lucky Star also introduced me to Japanese culture in general. School trips, New Year's festivities, festivals, customs, school system, etc... Again, I'm not going to claim that it was a totally accurate portrayal of Japanese culture or anything, but it was just as fascinating all the same and spurred me on to learn more by myself. From reflecting my life, it became a slice of my life. I made anime my life's passion. I picked up Japanese, dabbled in freelance translation, and through my intensive course of study in college, made a ton of friends with similar interests who I can say will be with me for life. Now, I have a postgrad degree in Japanese studies and have just passed my JLPT N1. I literally wouldn't be where I am today without this show. While the references in Lucky Star are dated, the characters, anecdotes, and vignettes are just as sincere, timeless, and relevant as they were back then. In our quest to be elitist, intellectual, and analytical, perhaps somewhere along the way, the characters cease being human. Even if Lucky Star is not your cup of tea (watch K-On! for that), if any genre is going to teach us about being human, I think this is the one to do it.

Awesome news all around! Lucky Star is the anime that got me into anime, and even after all this time it's still in my top two favorites! I think it's practically criminal that VIZ hasn't printed the old manga volumes yet, and completely absurd that nobody has brought over the last volumes ever. The new spin off sounds amazing, I just turned 31 recently, so reading about Konata being 31 would be particularly a treat!

Honestly, the strangest feeling I had around Lucky Star coming back was when I mentioned it to someone else who wasn't _that_ much younger than me, and they had no clue what it was. The idea that one of the first shows that got me into anime in general (and also probably made me a little bit more comfortable with "girlier" things through the inexplicable powers of moe) is over a decade old, and has just kinda rested itself into the past enough that people might not even notice it is so strange. It like, _is_ anime/manga to me, in one of its purest forms.

I love that they are having her age 31 for that spin off manga, which is how old I am now, idk I just really like that! Especially I got to enjoy the lucky star anime, an anime about high schoolers, as a high schooler, while it was airing. I'm nostalgic for that era of anime in general, waiting each week to pirate the next fan subbed episode, it was something to look forward to in those simpler times. It seemed like most new anime I was watching back then, I start watching them near the end of the school year and got to follow the rest of the season through summer break. Those were also the years when I discovered Vocaloid and Touhou, downloading so much of the music and started my image collections of the characters, that I still have going today, kind of a massive digital hoarder. I guess those years really defined much of my hobbies and interests, and to see a character I enjoyed from those years as having grown up to the same or around the same age as me, like life continued for them as well, that is so nice

I've seen a couple of chapters of a manga called "I Don't Know Much About Garage Kits." It's a little on the risqué side, but it's got a slow pace to it that's weirdly well pulled-off and a subtle, dry sense of humor, so it's pretty nice! Literally just a cute girl (I don't think she's in high school, but she's got a really cute design in a mature sort of way) working on garage kits and talking about the process. It came out in 2021, but it looks like it might be a bi-annual release, so there's probably not a tankobon you can pick up yet and I don't know who publishes it.

Honestly one of the best videos I’ve watched all year. Work was pretty rough today and this was exactly what I needed. I absolutely adore Lucky Star, it was the anime to get me back into anime (It also has Tsukasa Hiiragi), and seeing the manga get to continue again with a new spin off on the way in a magazine with an Urusei Yatsura 2022 article and an ad for Sonic Frontiers is so freaking cool to me. I loved how you went into detail about what the magazine is like, the other manga that’s in it, how you got it and the process of getting the magazine pages scanned, And then you incorporated a cooking video in here! I loved that, and I’m glad the dish came out good. If you made another video like this one when the May volume of the magazine comes out I wouldn’t mind at all! I didn’t know a video about a magazine could be this fun! Thank you so much for this video and I hope I’m not being too weird 🙏

Was this video purposefully supposed to mimic what that variety magazine had to offer? A little bit of manga, cooking, slice of life, and random thoughts. If so how wonderful and cozy this was.

I'm so excited for Lucky Star to come back! It was my go-to "cozy for the season" anime whenever I needed a pick me up, haha. I apologize if you get this question a lot, but do you know Japanese? I'm fairly new to your channel and appreciate the effort that goes in each of your videos. I'm hoping to teach myself Japanese someday

This one's a fun one to have on in the background while playing a video game or something because every time you shift your attention back to the video it's like "wait how did this video reach this point, she's making rice?"

Listening to you gush over things you love is always a joy and I will never tire of it. ♥ Also, if you incorporated more cooking into your videos, I would not be mad AT ALL. As I, too, love to cook, when the spark hits me.

14:40 the Santa Claus thing is apparently a yearly event called “Santa Con” where people dress up as Santa to go out on the town and do bar crawls. I know this because at my work thousands of people came in throughout the day out of the rain to be loud and crazy and clog up the toilets. I have no idea how people organize this stuff or find out about it

If you think about it the whole video is an homage to the way the anime storyline worked a bunch of stories or fragments of stories mixed in together with no coherence between the parts
