A scale-house operator in Indiana once told me that they'll pull almost every heavy-haul for a check just to demonstrate to their bosses that their efforts are showing "compliance" with the Regs. It's just a "numbers game."

"Open" like truckers have a choice to use the scale. In Norway we have flashing lights 2-3 times before the scales, so its easy to see if there is a control from a long distance. Many places there are alternative routes if you are overweight, to avoid the scales.

It is pretty common practice at most scales in the USA. The bypass lane is 40 mph and they are worried about not being able to merge properly. I showed the sign in the video to show it wasn’t my idea. I don’t make the rules, I just follow them.

I hate permits. I hope they are smarter people back east than we have out here in the pacific northwest; they don't seem to understand when your dragging 100-plus feet and wide, they can not run you on some dinky back country road

My experience as a driver years ago Virginia scales were always open. Can’t afford to close them too much of a cash cow… they claim safety truth of the matter. It’s all about money?

@luckybananaheavyhaul3407
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 Жыл бұрын
Most places the pilots go around but in Virginia I’ve been told the pilots need to cross the actual scale with the truck. If the truck gets called around back for inspection the pilots follow because they are eligible for inspection also.

in 2023 you still have to get out of the truck to deliver paperwork to authorities ? They dont know about emails ? what a waste of time for something that should be doable online prior to your departure with the load and communicated trough states.

Considering that they have to take a partial weight of the front and then a partial weight of the back due to your length, I wonder if they do some mathematical wizardry to figure out the actual weight, or do they consider oversize loads an extenuating circumstance and just call it "close enough"?
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 Жыл бұрын
No they can be very picky. If I’m over on any of my axle groupings they will make me order a new permit. Even when you have multiple grouping like with jeeps and boosters it all needs to balance within the permit.
@johnwiesner6534
@johnwiesner6534 Жыл бұрын
Most state scales are set up in sections according to axle groups and the truck always approach's them on a level surface. The scale master can see if you are completely on the sections. If not, they record the correct axle weights for the good sections and instruct the driver to move as needed to put the improper axle group onto a section for a correct recording. Then all the correct recordings will be added to show the gross weight. The larger problem is that when a driver goes to get a check weigh from the CAT scales that luckybanana showed, those scales are sometimes elevated above the parking lot itself. That will show improper weights on axle groups based on the angle that the truck and trailer would otherwise show based on the lean of the elevation. But this doesn't happen when the truck is legal length. Then extra length is added to the permit application as needed and normally measured bumper-to-bumper.

@@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 Thanks for the compliments. I noticed that the front corners of the trailer were cut to a 45 degree angle. Is that for relief when your pin on axle is mounted?
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407

Temisko trailers just like to be different. You wouldn’t normally load a mini deck up beside the gooseneck so I guess it saves a bit of weight.

Lots of trucks have PrePass. Its a subscription wireless device up on the windshield thats tied in with your company info and gives you bypasses based on your DOT standing. Good standing means you have less infractions and weight issues. 8/10 times youll get a green light on the prepass and dont have to pull into weight stations.
