So, just a recap: 1: Short barrel (18-20”) 2: Short stock (12-13” for proper mounting) 3: Mag extension (5-6 rounds in the gun) 4: Spare ammo (side saddle or stock carrier) 5: Sight upgrade (although not essential) 6: Mounted light (for obvious reasons)

I can't imagine life without my trusty ol' Moss 500. I have always just had it loaded with 00 buck. Just recently I made the switch to #4 buck. 27 pellets that are the size of a .22 with an eight inch spread at 10 yards which is home defense range.

Well technically its more closely related to the .240 or the .243 that shoot at 3500 to 4k fps. If you look at buckshot flying at 1200fps or so thats like emptying half a box of large game rounds at someone AT ONCE.

*deep breath* Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. *Four ruffians break into my house. *"What the devil?" as I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. *Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. *Draw my pistol on the second man, misses him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbor's dog. *I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot. *"Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. *Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. *Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Thumbs up for that. I put a 18.5" barrel on my first gun ever a Mossberg 500 AB. The only problem is the length of the stock this shotgun is 44 years old and still like new. The most use was clay pigeon shooting and small game but then she got put away but was kept up with annual oiling and kept dry. I want to buy a tactical semi-auto with pistol style grip and adjustable stock. If there are suggestions would love to hear even if I can get a good used model. Thanks hope to hear. just throw a "gun free and knife free" zone sign up so they can't break into your house with that. Then ask them VERY Politely to leave. Having some sort of flashlight is literally the most important characteristic of any defensive weapon. You HAVE to know what you're pointing your gun at. It's more important than what sights you have. It's more important than even having sights at all. It's more important than ammo choice, grips, stocks, anything. It's literally priority number one as far as accessories. The one and only thing that's more important than a flashlight is practice.

Tw things: 1. Dogs are members of the family too 2. What about a sling?
@LuckyGunner
@LuckyGunner 8 жыл бұрын
I like my dog, but the guilt I would feel if I accidentally shot him would pale in comparison to the pain and psychological torture I would endure if I accidentally shot one of my kids. I understand the sentiment, but I prefer to make a distinction there. I'm not a big fan of slings on home defense guns. First, you probably shouldn't be carrying it anywhere because you shouldn't be trying to clear your own house, especially not with a long gun. The shotgun is a "bunker defense" weapon when you can safely stay in one spot and engage an attacker only if they come to you. If you must move around the house, turn on lights, open doors, etc, a handgun is a better tool. But even if you were to be mobile in the home with a shotgun, the sling is going to be more of a hindrance than a help. It would really suck if you were trying to check out a bump in the night end you end up getting disarmed by a doorknob that snagged your sling.

I'm enjoying the shotgun videos immensely. I was kinda afraid of picking up a shotgun because I'm not a huge dude, and I'm intimidated by the 12 gauge recoil. But... you don't look like a huge dude either so you give me confidence. And the clue about adding a shorter stock. So I picked up a Mossberg 590, put a 12" Hogue stock on it, and I'm ready for my first trip to the range! (I've been shooting for about 35 years, so not my FIRST trip to the range, just my first SHOTGUN trip to the range.) :-)

Australian Eugenics Expert As much as I really don’t want to get into a debate about guns in the US... I feel like alarm systems act more as a deterrent than an actual line of defense. You’re right that a criminal can and has done that. But it’s most likely to scare away dumb criminals and you’re left with the smart ones breaking in. Smart criminals are going to plan out when you’re not home and break in then. A shotgun really has no benefit there. Sometimes yes. Someone will be dumb enough to break in with an alarm system while you’re home. That’s extremely unlikely from my experience and at some point it’s better to accept the loss and have nobody hurt or killed than to pop em’ in the head or chest at short range. But you know shotguns are nice for other uses so I’m not saying no to having one for fun and keeping it for home safety also.

You really only need one thing... a suppressor. No one mentions how deafening and disorienting it will be when you let loose that short barrel 12 gauge indoors in a small bedroom hallway, where ALL of that pressure is bounced right back at you. *mawp... mawp* If you can't own a suppressor, get something like a SU22, so that you can at least minimize the permanent hearing damage you're about to inflict on yourself.

From my experience with lights, using a surefire for end dedicated light would be a better choice than adding a separate light to the forend. Reason being, if you have ever shot a 12 gauge with a light as close to the forend like shown in this video, the recoil will make that rack come back and dig the light in to your hand, which is painful. I've done it to myself more than once when I practiced at the range, bought a surefire dsf and never had that trouble again. Just my .02
@contention100

I had an old 50 round bandolier laying around. I cut that thing down to 10 groups of 5. I went out and bought a roll of velcro. I glued that to the back of the bandolier. I even put a few pop rivets in just to make sure that it didn't separate. I then put some velcro on the side of my mossberg 500, works great. They have lasted over 3 years. None have gotten loose. It is a piece of cake to drop a couple packs of shotgun shells into my side pocket.

I love your videos. I am trying to refine my home shotgun defense. Your videos have been extremely helpful! I have a Mossberg that I bought with a pistol grip at a gun show, Merica! I'm trying to refine it into a home defense weapon. I love the look of the Magpul furniture on your gun. My barrel and magazine are a a bit long for my liking but I'm off on the right track. I have a mossberg 500 tactical with a 26 inch barrel setting in the closet. Now it might look a little funny with a short adjustable stock and the side saddles for extra rounds. Now in about 10 minutes I can turn this gun back into a pretty decent hunting shotgun. I had an old bandelier laying around and I chopped it up into 5 round segments. Went out and bought a roll of velcro. Glued that to the bandelier. I now have 50 rounds of shotgun shells pre-loaded onto the side saddles and stored in a box.

Most burglaries don't, some do, and if you're unlucky enough to have that, or, alternatively, you miss, having more rounds. The entire point of the gun is to prepare for the worst case scenario, because if you have to pull a gun in the first place, it's already a pretty bad situation. It also gives you more room to fire warning shots if you deem that a good course of action.

Richard Lamoreaux That is a good consideration. I have never shot slugs in low light. I would prefer a red dot probably, but I don't think I would benefit at all in that case from ghost rings. While optics would provide a benefit, ghost rings would not (for me).

Bead sights are trash. I switched to ghost rings and they’re tremendously better than the antique beads, which all but disappear in low light and are next to useless in a CQB scenario, and are laughably ineffective when using slugs. Ghost rings rock and are the only way to go on a true tactical shotgun. Great video!

Which delivers more stopping power? Slugs or Buckshot?
@LuckyGunner
@LuckyGunner 8 жыл бұрын
+Jake Norden Both have a very good track record for stopping attackers with a single upper torso shot. Two in some rare instances. Slugs typically have more recoil and tend to over penetrate, so buckshot is preferred for home-defense. Slugs are better when you need to reach past 25-35 yards, which is more relevant for hunting than for personal protection.

Good info. Sounds Iike I've got my bases covered pretty good with my Remington 870 tactical magpul express. 6+1, streamlight tlr1s, mesa tactical 6 round side saddle. I learned not to keep it fully loaded all the time, my magazine spring lost alot of tension. Just ordered a heavy duty spring and will only load it with 7 before bed and keep 5 loaded otherwise.
@abc456f
@abc456f 8 жыл бұрын
+westmichile88 I can only relate my own experience but after keeping it fully loaded for months the spring lost all its tension. Used to be when I'd unscrew the mag cap the spring would fly out. After several months I'd unscrew the cap and the spring didn't move. Replaced it with a wolff heavy duty spring. It's all moot now because I'm keeping an m and p sport 2 ar 15 by my bed at night. After doing alot of research I discovered that the 00 buck pellets from a 12 gauge will over penetrate more than .223 hp from an ar. Plus it's much lighter to handle and I have 30 rounds instead of 7.
@FLippssalot
@FLippssalot 8 жыл бұрын
+srg914 I think Mike lamb recommends #4 buck for home in regards to over penetration. One could say it delivers enough penetration to get the job done without being too insignificant. If a shell can't penetrate a wall at house distance, might be questionable whether that'll get the job done.
