AMC Spirit AMX Starter Replacement FINALLY! Powermaster Starter Upgrade!

It's been a few months since the 1979 AMC Spirit AMX has been on the channel, and that's been due to a cooked starter. Over the fall on it's most recent test drive it gave up the ghost, and refuses to get back to work. So out with the old, which is only a couple months old, and in with the new Powermaster 9000-15 starter.
These AMC Gremlins and Spirits are a challenge to work on, especially with headers on them. As you'll quickly see a simple starter replacement can end up being quite the adventure in parts replacement!

Had a AMC Matador back in the day. One of the nicest running cars I ever had.

I wish I lived closer to your shop Rich. I`m in York Pa, 402 miles away 6 1/2 ish hour ride. Would love to have you give my 91 C1500 a good look. Odometer broke @ 212.200ish over 11ish years ago, so I bought a digital dash from Jegs with covid money that`s still in the box. Was my SIL`S truck I got for a steal 6 years ago. In 2013 she replaced the bad 350, truck has no cancer, and bad 90`s paint. I drove the snot out of it until the 700R4 gave up the ghost and puked the fluid. Saving to replace it. I love the old AMC`s too, would daily Austin`s AMX if I had one. You guys have some really cool cars and work on some awesome cars like the old Barracuda, Austins Pontiacs , your Buick. Cool 😎 ! I run the Summit Racing Protorque , Nippondenso starter . I keep two on the shelves just in case and no problems yet . I did have the Hitachi type before and are just a waist of money .

Not ideal, kinda like a 70 Mustang 351C with headers. My 1st car, had to do it 2 times. It was a job both times. I used a mini starter the last time, it was four times the cost. Much easier to install it.

The starter is captured inside the header which in turn is captured by the front suspension crossmember. It's very difficult to put a starter in one of these on your back with long tubes on it.
