Time to dive back into our "Booger" Ford Capri revival or restoration or whatever you want to call it. We're trying to make an old forgotten about car run drive turn and stop again! In the last video you all saw with this car it fired up and idled with the newly cleaned fuel tank and timing setup, now it's time to see if it will move and importantly will it STOP!
What we have here is a 1974 Ford Capri 2000GT powered by the ever popular Ford 2.0 Pinto 4 cylinder engine. Here in the states this is definitely the most sought after setup for a the MK 1 Ford Capri as it is bone simple, takes abuse, and can turn out solid power and not cost a crazy amount of money. This car was originally purchased as a parts car for the Junkyard Digs Capri we picked up a few months back but it's just in too good of shape for us to tear it apart. So, 2 project capri build cars going at the same thing. Yeah we know we're nuts.
In this episode we work on some of the fueling issues and start getting into the break system before running into one of the stupidest snags possible. But that's how old cars, hot rods, muscle cars, and project cars go... rarely according to plan!
Also included in this is a little bit of the background situation behind what went on with the Old Man's Garage Malibu when it was here last. The pinion bearing challenge and how Mark at A1 in Buckeye lake stepped up and found us a solution! So kudos again to Mark for the extra effort. Norm at Team Blitz, without you we would have NO idea what direction to go and what is possible with this... and no where to find parts! Glad to have you on the team!
Lastly as always we want to thank all of our fans, subscribers, and supporters who are helping this channel grow and improve. Without you folks coming to watch our shenanigans we would just be some weird Ohio car guys doing cool stuff by ourselves, sharing some of it with you all makes it much more fun. Special thanks to the SRC / Street Racing Channel / SRC Garage / Old Man's Garage family as well as the Junkyard Digs folks for the huge support over the last few months. You all have been incredible and we can not say THANK YOU enough!
We hope you enjoy this video there are more parts on the way and we'll be back to wrenching on Capris! The next Capri video you see though MAY be with the Ford Capri Racecar that's sitting in storage and the engine build we have moving forward for it!

In 1975 my then 18 year old girlfriend who is currently my wife had a 74 Capri with a V6 and 4 speed. I believe it was also badged on the trunk or lower front fenders Cortina. I was familiar with the Cortina name because my brother drove a 68 Cortina GT and his joy was giving fits to Porsche 356 owners. The Capri ran very well and was a lot of fun to drive.

We are VERY much hoping to channel some of that 70s fun back into the world with bringing this little green thing back to life. Everyone we've talked to has stories and comments just like this and we absolutely love it, that kind of stuff is exactly what make all of us LOVE our cars. This one will stay 2.0 4 cylinder but the race car is going to have a built 2.8 V6 which is the biggest baddest motor we could get here in the US, fun times ahead for sure!

Last time I broke free a clutch on a Capri, I simply jacked the rear up a couple of inches off ground via the diff, gave it about 3-4000 revs in second gear and dumped the jack. By pressing the clutch pedal while you are doing this, as soon as the clutch free itself, you are good. This is a two man job. That saved hours no end. If second gear do not work, try 3rd gear as more torque applied should free the clutch. My 74' Capri MkII with 3 litre started no problem in 32.8F after being sitting for 3 weeks. But it did take one hour before it was sweather temps inside the car. This was back in 99'.

In Canada these were sold as Mercury Capri's in the day. I had 2 of them when I was in my teens. Both were 2.6L V6's and one was a complete built engine with racing pistons high rise manifold hooker headers and a Holly 4 barrel carb. It had way too much power for the drive train and blew out the rear end. But both were and are still one of my favorite cars. Too bad I don't still have them.
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 2 жыл бұрын
These were sold in The States under the Mercury name as well, which always seems to get into confusion and arguments. Built by Ford of Europe and imported here, no Mercury badging anywhere but sold at Mercury dealers. Same with the Pantera also, Ford just didn't want them on the Ford dealer lots stealing thunder and sales from the Mustang I guess? The 2.8 V6 we are building for the racecar should be a pretty stout little motor. We are going higher compression, intake, 4 barrel, headers... should be a fun little ripper as long as we can keep the other pieces together!

It really is extremely unfortunate how far modern cars have gone to take away the casual wrenchers ability to work on their own stuff. Even something as simple as oil changes require removing shields, clips, sometimes specialty tools... say nothing of the diagnostic tools needed to communicate with these things. Want a shock? Look up what the modern Snap-On full service scan tool costs to buy... and just to use year after year. Wouldn't recommend doing it on a full stomach though!

Blew 5 diffs in it, couldn't handle burnouts. 2.0 Pinto engines were great, plenty of aftermarket parts available when they first come out

I have very fond memories of the Ford Capri. I never had one, but a couple of my friends did. I had the little more pedestrian Escort (73). The Capri like the Escort was a simple car but a lot of fun. The handling taught you all you needed to know about oversteer. The Capri was always that little bit quicker off the lights, gearing, I guess. The South Africans had the best engine, 4l V8. Here in the UK, we only got the 3l V6 as the highest spec engine.

Ford sold the euro Capri in North America as a unique import, hence the lack of Ford or Mercury badges on the cars. Most of the advertising carried Ford branding and the cars were sold via Lincoln-Mercury dealers. The later Merkur brand was kind of the same idea a decade later.
