When you realize that you can understand almost everything but cannot speak, that's an invitation to start opening your mouth and try out what you know. People think just because they understand what it's said they will miraculously speak, it doesn't happen like that. Speaking is putting into practice what you've been collecting through your ears, and yes, you'll be making lots of mistakes, so have fun.

@@salvatoxgraziaaldo3573 I'm just 13 and my English isn't so good but if you want I can try to explain: "ci mancherebbe altro" means "of course" for example if someone tells you something but ask you don't tell it to anybody, you can answer "ci mancherebbe". "col senno di poi" it's a little more difficult to explain but I'm trying: literally means "in hind sight" and it's really like if I could know i could make an other decision. I'm not really sure of what I wrote. I hope you understand 😅😊

I talk out loud to myself as I do mundane things around the house. Sometimes I describe what I am doing, like when I make dinner I pretend I am on an Italian cooking show lol. When I don't know how to say something, I do a quick search in my phone. Usually, it will stick. Or when I am driving, I will try to describe my day. But yes, forcing yourself to speak it out loud helps a lot. I still speak like a caveman, but I feel myself improving!

This happened to me even when I was learning English, and now I feel it is at the same level than my native language. My advice is, try to narrate things you do, translate scenarios/conversations you live throughout the day, or try to write a journal or about something youre inspired on in the target language. The trick is to put yourself to produce and practice, even if it feels impossible at first, until your brain starts doing it automatically :) Good luck, everyone!

@@paigew2044 I will say 5 years (max) using my university years as reference; the difference between how I started my first year and how I finished the last one is HUGE. But it could have been less time probably. I think it will depend a lot on how frequent you try/practice. Your brains starts doing it on its own later when it gets used to it.

The best Italian audio and text to listen to and read are these fantastic lessons from Lucrezia themselves! Switch on the Italian subtitles and repeat out loud everything she says as you read it, it has really helped me so much! I also do the same with shows on Netflix by choosing Italian audio and subtitles.

I started learning italian three month ago without a special reason "per divertimento". Right now we are spending a three week vacation at Sicily. I didn't expect to speak any italian at all. But to my utterly surprise I am able to comunicate on a low Level but at least I do speak!!! Che gioia!!!!

It also depends on the language. I know with Russian my "silence period" has been probably about 2 or 3 years! I have not done this yet with Italian, I am still in the passive phase of learning. But I know that I usually try to speak either in the car (alone), in bed where no one can hear me (at night when no one else is awake), or else in the shower (but not as often there). Another thing you can do is to imagine saying the words but not actually say them aloud (obviously it doesn't help with pronunciation, but if you've done enough listening it should be fine). In other words, to try to think in the new language. This has worked for me in composing new sentences. You could do this while commuting for example...

I really love the method of "shadowing". It's when you repeat everything after the speaker 3 seconds after. Smth like a simultaneous translation but in the same language. For example, I was repeating this video trying to mimic the intonation. It really helps

It is indeed very much like simultaneous translation and allowing the language to enter you and to teach your palate to readjust naturally. It is almost like you become your own native speaker. I've been half-heartedly learning Spanish for decades but I met a Spanish speaking girlfriend a couple of years ago and the fact that we can practice together without fear of being judged is fantastic. I've gone from essentially A2 to B2 with hardly any effort, just reading and listening mostly but occasionally speaking and writing as well. We are both starting to learn some Italian as well which is why I am here. I can't recommend reading at your level in the target language enough. It's brilliant.

It is very true that when you talk to yourself or do "monologues" it is easier to learn how to speak a certain language. I did this when I was learning English (I would pretend I have a YT channel and I would present to my "fans" my day, cooking or anything else). I am doing the same now for Italian and I hope that one day I'll speak like you. Thanks Lucrezia!

I personally experienced that when learning other languages as well. I could understand far more than I could speak at first. Over time, my speaking ability started coming together as I practiced with native speakers.

It's so interesting. I'm not currently learning Italian, but somehow youtube recommended me this video, and as a Portuguese native speaker, I understood barely 80% to 90% of what she said without the subtitles. I'm now feeling curious to learn this language. Never thought about how similar it sounds to Portuguese. Great video! Subscribed just now! Edit: I also learned Spanish (and English as you see), and I've experienced that frustration of understanding the written and spoken language, but being unable to communicate properly. It helped me a lot to practice alone at home, imagining you're talking to someone or imagining a future situation. Seems a bit crazy but it truly helps!

I just got this randomly recommended(maybe because im learning italian) but i have an advice for anyone who is reading this. One thing my english teacher always used to tell us is: talk to yourself out loud. Speak it. Out. Loud. Start making sentences and respond to them. That is the best and fastest way to learn a language.

I'm a veteran language learner just starting on Italian and to progress to the stage of forming sentences and gaining oral competence I have learned: Don't worry if you're speaking "Tarzan Italian" Instead of .. posso venire con tu invece di riminare qui? ... " Io vengo con tu. OK? Qui, no!" You're not committing yourself to having to construct a whole paragraph, you break it up! Also, and this is very handy, remember that in words like leggere and Bella the double letters are pronounced separately. Es.sere. bel.la etc

Hello! Thank you for making this video. It's very useful. For those who can, I can recommend putting yourself in the position where you have no other choice than to speak Italian. For example, a few years ago I went to Sicily with my aunt (who lives in Italy for 11 or 12 years). We were staying in a small village where no one, but really NO ONE was speaking English. I was really forced to use Italian, even though I had very little experience in learning it.

Forse perché vivo in un paese dove ci sono tre lingue diverse, non mi ha creato problemi a "sentirmi" in un'altra lingua. In ogni caso, è un esercizio che consiglio a tutti: raccontatevi la vostra giornata, spiegate una ricetta, fate una lista delle vostre attività..... ad alta voce. Don't, please. You can find 'everyday italian' in the comments, that's true, but believe me when i say that they are full of grammar and syntax mistakes!!!! Just to give you an example: facebook is not the best place when it comes to learn the "congiuntivo", since most of italians still don't know how to use it in a sentence. Unfortunatly, most italian people don't show their best on social networks when it comes to written italian language. So please, don't use discussions on facebook to learn. I know what i am talking about since i am italian.

I want to learn Italian as my third language. I can talk in English C2, Spanish C2 and I realized that for Spanish native speakers as a romantic language we can understand almost everything but we can't talk at all so I think grammar and vocabulary is hugely important to comprehend completely the structure of the language

When I was learning Spanish, I studied for 2 months but didn't speak very much for the first month when I arrived in the country. I agree with the concept of a period of silence as you absorb the language. I really think that you need to be around native speakers and have a reason to learn. Most people understand, are patient, and helpful.

I work 12hours a day. Have to keep my house clean, cook, support my parents. I have so so little time to learn italian. Can’t afford to travel and learn Italian. It is really a privilege to have freedom and even the internet. Thou I may take 5 years to understand C and 10 years to start speaking.?

If you really want it, it's not bad if you take long to learn. Especially with your lifestyle, I could never actually have that lifestyle (my working day is broken up, but I sometimes start at 8-10 am and finish my day at 10 pm. Right before the quarantine I taught one group in the morning, from 11 am to 2 pm, and my preparation for class started when I came to work at 10, and the second group from 7 to 10 pm and sometimes I stayed at the office during the break because I needed to do so much work that there was no sense in going home. 2 days of that and I would snap. So I genuinely think you're awesome for working like that and still wanting to study a language.

Hi Sarah. I am Italian. I am learning Japanese without teacher .... It is super hard ... In 1 year I can say only few sentences ... In 10 years maybe I will be able to understand something .... I was just saying this the other day. I was so frustrated. I try to use my words when I text my husband or when we're home. But putting a sentence together is not easy. It helps that I took spanish in high school. It helps me understand sentence structure and verb conjugation. Thank you for this video. I thought I was the only one. I love your videos.

Yeah I’m the same. I’m much better at listening and reading, but feel very pressured when I speak it in front of someone and I tend to forget everything I’ve learnt 🤦‍♂️

I’ve been taking Italian lessons for about four months (once a week). My concentration has been on grammar. I have seen a marked improvement with grammar and writing, but can’t carry on a conversation; or, speak with any confidence. I’m hoping a bolt of lightning hits soon, but it’s good to see that others share the same issue as I’m having.

It was also a bit stressful when going to Italy and speaking with Italians as I found that most spoke very fast as any other national in their own country, and I struggled to comprehend what was being said...that and the fact you have to consider dialect and slang too. It was tricky but after a week I felt a little more confident saying the odd sentence and phrase here and there, but overall I still struggle speaking.

😱 una cosa simile accade a me poiché io ho imparato a leggere e scrivere in italiano abbastanza bene utilizzando dei libri di grammatica . sono anche capace di capire 80% di tutto che ascolto . leggo vari notizie su euronews per poter ottenere un po più di vocabolario , ma quando si tratta di parlare io non riesco a parlare quasi nulla 😢😢😢

Prova a memorizzare brevi dialoghi in italiano e ripeterli ad alta voce ... Tipo un dialogo al ristorante, un dialogo al cinema, ecc.. vedrai che poi le frasi ti usciranno automaticamente senza pensarci !
