As a plane captain at pax river naval air center in 1960-63 we at that time were required to pull flight time each month. Beleive me i took advantage of the back seat of the F-4 H PHANTOM we were testing. I thank the test pilots who gave me the ride of my life!! At 81 i have never again experienced anything like it!!!

Thanks for the memories. I was a crew chief on the F4-D @ Torrejon AB "TJ" from 1980-83. Gotta love the unique sound of the J79. Also the unique anhedral and dihedral of the wing planform. Those German paint schemes of the Phantom Pharwell are just gorgeous.

I became the crew chief on Phantom 69-370 when it was assigned to Zweibrucken, Air Base in Germany back in 1974. Lots of responsibility given to a 21 + year old kid, back in the day. I loved getting the pilot and navigator out to the plane, strapping them in, and launching them out for flight. A great aircraft.

When I was a kid they would constantly fly over our city, sometimes passing in low flight directly over our houses. We were taking so many photos back then. This beauty really is my most beloved jet of all times.

I have a cousin who is a retired colonel from the Air Force. One of the jets he flew was the Phantom. The pilots had a joke: If you put a jet engine on a brick you can get it to fly. To me the Phantom is a work of art. It has such beautiful lines and it has a natural flow even standing still. Beautiful plane.

When i arrived at Korat RTFB, 1971, my first reaction, the F-4E reminded me af a sports car. The Thud, F-105F/G models, they looked like a fighter, sitting high off the ground, long sleek, and you knew what it was for. I worked avionics on the Thud, but we had three squadrons of F-4Es going in and out, out full of bombs, in with nothing coming back, sometimes holes in them from ground fire. Our Thuds flew the Wild Weasel missions and a lot of them never came home. We lost good men on missions. Both fighters have a spot in my memory, a special spot no other aircraft will fill.

I love F14's, 15's, 16's and 18's. But as a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's the F4 Phantom will always be the baddest. It just looks....terrifying. "All shall love me, and despair". I've always thought they look like a flying shark - the archetype of modern fighter jets....

Good to hear F-4 guy , I remember hearing of the stories of you mechanics working there with open air revetments . We had the "Tab-Vee's" , hardened area shelters, to keep our aircraft in and covered against air attack. I am sure you have good memories of RAF Alconbury as do I . I was a sheetmetal mechanic with the 10th AGS sqdn from 85-88 and sadly we were the last RF-4C squadron because they were being retired and replaced by RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge A-10's .

I was waiting for a C-130 ride back to Okinawa out of Danang in early 1967 to rejoin the 9th Marines Amphibious Brigade stationed at Camp Hansen and had the privilege of seeing about 30 of these return from a mission. It was very impressive to a young 21 year old Marine corporal. My how time flies by.

Best plane ever built Got to see it in action in Vietnam. Was stationed at Cua Viet in I core. At the mouth of the Cua Viet river and the ocean. When bombing up in the D M Z they would hug the ocean until they get to our base . Then straight up in the air they would go and do the bomb runs and back to DaNang or Quantrie. Was in Namm 1969 thru 1970. God bless the pilots and navigator. They had balls of steel.

When I was growing up in Birmingham Alabama there was a reconnaissance wing based there. Our house was directly under the landing flight path about 5-6 miles from airport. These beauties constantly came over in pairs wingtip to wingtip. During the same period the sky would glow in the evening from a pour at U S steel in Fairfield/Ensley. Was 50 years ago and I can remember it like yesterday. God I miss those times !

my best duty when I was a crew chief on the F-4D was EOR or end of runway. When they landed and turned onto the taxiway they would jettison the drag chute. We would scurry out and recover the chutes.

I saw a brittish one crashing in Germany in the 80s and wrote the pilot when my son was becoming 5 years old, as he kept asking me about this crash. The pilot wrote us a long email. Luckily he and his co where ok and kept on flying for many more years on different models. He is an airshow pilot since he was retired and is the pilot who should have flown the Hawker Hunter that later crashed in Shoreham. On that day he could not fly it and so another guy crashed it due to pilot`s error. Phantom was always my favourite plane when I was staying at the fences of RAF Wildenrath when I was about 10 years old. Now I am 52 and the plane is long time gone….Sad.

I was aboard USS Midway from 70 to 72 and we had two squadrons of F-4s. VF151 and VF-161. My favorite planes of all time. The pilots of the Vigilantes and Chargers had a well deserved swagger. They were the Best!!!

Started with gliders at Torrey Pines Glider Club & flew the club's Piper Cubs J-3. Cost me $2 hr. for the gliders & $4/hr. for the Cubs. I was a lineman during the wk. & flying club a/c on weekends. I liked airplanes then & still do today. I was in VF-161 Chargers. Went fm. Demons to Phantoms in the navy. Love these videos of the old airplanes.

Grazie per queste immagini stupende. Sono innamorato del Phantom. Fa parte della mia infanzia perché abito a 10 km da Aviano, base dell'USAF, e per i primi anni della mia vita ho visto e sentito Phantom dappertutto. Tipicissimo su Pordenone era l'ululato caratteristico dei J-79 quando i piloti toglievano progressivamente gas per avvicinarsi alla pista, o il rumore potente in decollo. Qualcosa di molto diverso dal rumore degli f-16 basati qui adesso, ormai da anni. Trenta o quarant'anni fa ci si poteva fermare alla rete di recinzione della Base, su quasi tutto il perimetro, quindi decine di volte ho visto da vicino ogni ben di dio. Non posso dimenticare tutto il lavoro del pilota in fase di atterraggio col Phantom. Non si parla di f-16, niente fly by wire, all'epoca gestire l'aeroplano era un gran casino, e soprattutto in caso di vento era spettacolare vedere le parti mobili della coda muoversi per le correzioni che i piloti operavano a pochi metri in alto, davanti a noi, sentire come giocava sulla manetta. Al passaggio dei jet in atterraggio, a pochi metri da suolo, si può avvertire un secco crepitio nell'aria. Sempre. Non ho mai capito a che cosa fosse dovuto. Spettacoli indimenticabili. Infatti li ricordo perfettamente dopo quattro decenni.

Se ci andava da piccolo e da ragazzo (sarebbe esattamente come me, che son del '62, e ci andavo col papà, soprattutto nei dì di festa...), Lei sa a che immagini mi riferisco, quando dico che il pilota agiva visibilmente sulle superfici di coda, soprattutto nel passare sopra la strada o sui campi dove eravamo osservatori. Ho sempre pensato che, malgrado una sicurezza (che pure oggi è pazzesca sul perimetro della Base) un malintenzionato potrebbe fare fuoco con qualsiasi cosa (un AK-47, ad esempio) molto agevolmente su quello che vola sopra il campo. A parte questa remota ipotesi, posso dirLe che oggi se uno (lo dico perché è accaduto) va a sbattere per incidente sulla rete di recinzione, questo innesca immediatamente una procedura di sicurezza per cui nel giro di un minuto tu ti trovi con lampeggianti ovunque e attimi dopo arriva anche un elicottero. Quando tu sei lì che ti chiedi se sei intero, e che danni hai, loro ti sono già addosso. E ribadisco: vedere un f-4 che atterra è assai più emozionante che vedere gli f-16. Ogni bene, e grazie ancora per questo bel montaggio.

I remember back to when I was a kid growing up near the AZ border, I used to love watching these jets doing practice bombing runs on the Barry M. Goldwater missile range. I wasn't born until 69 so I missed Vietnam, but I had plenty of uncles and cousins who didn't. In the early 80's they still flew these jets at Luke AFB and at the Gila Bend AFB, but they began phasing them out. When I look at the F-4 I see the muscle car of jets!

Coolest looking nose/canopy. The huge radar dish behind that nosecone not only did swept search but target tracking and then continuous beaming (illumination) for the semi-active Sparrow to home in on. A big dish mechanically swept and tracked. Incredible technology for 1950's/1960's, and modern radars are fundamentally the same.

F-4s are my fav, i remember back in the late 80's at March AFB in Riverside California when they used to break the sound barrier multiple times a day but eventually stopped cause stupid people that moved to the area complained and bitched and eventually they stopped doing it in the area, was glorious while it lasted though.

We really did make a fine aircraft in the F-4 Phantom. Wonderful fighter bomber. Withstood the test of time and battle for many years. Was sad to see it retired. That music sounded like the music from the 1983 Air Show at Spangdahlem at about 4:30 on another video.

my first experience with the F-4 was in 1969. I was a crew chief on T-38s at Laredo AFB. my first duty station after tech. school. One saturday morning the silence was broken when the Thunderbirds, flying the F-4 flew low over the base in afterburner. They emptied the barracks with everyone running out to see what the heck was that. I got to work on them later in my four years with the Air Force. I worked on F-100Ds in vietnam then F-4Ds when i got back stateside. Fond memories for all the planes I crewed.

Was a Crew Chief on USAF F-4D 50714 at Hahn AB, Germany in '67-'68. Plane later on static display at Carswell AFB, Texas and later a drone for target practice. So SAD!

Today we still have these but they are only seen at many airshows around the world and in the USA too.Its doubtful they will ever be airworthy even for combat not in this century but they have served us well and will be a favorite by our men in both the USAF,MARINES,NAVY for years to come every year and the fond memories attest to the ruggedness and being able to survive a few combat missions in the years of the wars we fought until the 1990's then by 1998 they had to be retired and sent over in the ARIZONA sun to be on display for good.

I. Was at GA 77 to 86. 21st , 561st TFS. Got 2 incentive flights and a high speed barrier engagement . My oldest DCC Aircraft was 66-6333. 253, forgot the others. Did you know the road into Ore Grand, town at the bottom of the road is part of the original Route 66.

One of many favorite jets RF-4(C) ECS mechanic @ Bergstrom AFB, 12th AMU, Eglin AFB, 3211 FMS. I've had the privilege to work on every model except the "Wild Weasel"G model. Cope Thunder TDY @ Clark AB, Philippines, Osan AB, Korea for Team Spirit, Nellis AFB for Red Flag. Stationed from 82-83 at Kadena AB, Okinawa 9611 AWACS. Home base at Tinker AFB. Once you get a code for fighters, it's pretty much a wrap you're going to be stuck on fighters for the rest of the enlistment.
