If he couldn't handle one person changing their order and moving one table over, he had no business being a waiter anyway! He sure wouldn't survive TODAY the way people act!

@@retroguy9494 He was wearing bottlecap glasses so he had trouble with his sight. Lucy continually changing tables was driving him nuts. I've been a server and rarely had anyone behave that way, they may ask the hostess for a particular table but once they're there they don't get up and move. I did now and then have issues with people changing their orders but once the order was given to the cooks it was too late. I'd say, "Sorry, but the cooks are already working on it" and they listened to reason. Of course my experience was 40+ years ago and I know people are much less reasonable now. When you read that someone was murdered over cold fries and attacked at places like Chipotle because the order wasn't to their liking or sauces cost extra, you know you're not living in a sane world anymore.

@@alondralabute2310 Yes, he was badly nearsighted. That was part of the joke. I'm nearsighted myself so I know what it's like when one has trouble seeing. I agree with you. Once the order was placed and the chef started on it, it would be problematic to change the order. But that wasn't the case here. I, too, was a waiter about 35 years ago and my experiences were far worse than this clip. I will give you 2 as an example. One time, a large party came in right in the middle of Sunday brunch. There must have been 20 people. They were sat and I told them we were very busy and it might take some time for their food given their large party. The order was so big I literally had to tape multiple tickets together. When I put them on the wheel in the kitchen, the chef said to me 'are you SHITTING ME?' He said they would have to wait as he was already backed up. I was attentive, kept apologizing, etc. At one point, the ring leader of the group actually came into the kitchen and said 'excuse me...do you need help in here? Should I cook my own food?' The chef said to me 'get her out of here NOW!' Even though they KNEW it wasn't my fault, they took it out on me. The bill came to over $300 and as I recall, they left me a $2 tip. The other example was one night, a family of immigrants came in. The father seemed to take pleasure in running the white American boy back and forth all night. He would ask for something and I would say 'is that all sir?' When I brought it, he would ask for something else. I would say 'NOW is that all sir?' When I returned with the item, he'd ask for something else. Finally, I said to him out of exasperation 'I wish you would have told me that before so I don't have to run to the other side of the restaurant again!' He said, in a very thick accent 'I was trying not to overburden you.' I replied 'you don't think it's a burden when I have other tables to keep me running back and forth when I could have brought you everything in ONE trip?' Needless to say, I didn't last long in that restaurant.

@@retroguy9494 Oh, boy, brother, I hear you! About large parties, they ought to understand they will not receive the same quality of service as small parties. Especially if there is only one server! Once I was with a group of about 10 and I and another lady helped out the waitress by pouring coffee for the group, getting them more napkins, etc. Then the restaurant had the temerity to force a 20% gratuity onto our bill simply for being a large group. While I think more patience is called for, dunning us 20% for worse service (though no fault of the single waitress). I never ate there again. And I know all about the one item at a time game. I hate to say this but it seems that blacks did this way more than whites. This was the early 80's and when this happened to me the first time, my floor supervisor said, "Oh they're playing the "make whitey run" game. Always one item at a time. I would deliberately let them wait longer and longer between items. Teenage boys seemed to like this game too. They'd laugh when you asked "Anything else?" knowing good and well they'd be wanting something else when you returned, and it was always stuff you couldn't add to the bill. Napkins. More coffee. Another fork because they dropped the one you gave them. More water. And on it goes! But the worst was this one lady who came in a few times a week just for coffee. She liked it piping hot so just pouring it from the coffeepot wasn't good enough for her. You had to take her cup all the way back to the kitchen to get it directly from the urn. Every. Single. Time. And she would sit there and drink it down immediately so that you were only a few feet away when she called you back for more coffee. I had other tables to wait on and an order was up for a table of 4. I told her I'd be with her in a few minutes as I had to deliver a food order to another table. She actually expected me to let their food get cold while I got her more coffee! When I took the food order to the table she told my supervisor that I had REFUSED to give her more coffee. My supervisor asked me why I refused to give her more coffee. (she was smirking, she already knew). I asked if she'd ever waited on this woman. She sighed and nodded so I knew she wasn't serious with the question. I told the woman that you don't get your own personal waitress when you come into a restaurant. We all have sections to wait on with 4 or 5 tables. This woman never tipped though you might have to run back and forth to the kitchen 10 times to bring her yet another cup of piping hot coffee! Coffee was only 40 cents in those days. I have always felt that tipping should be based on how much the server does for you, not how much the bill is. Many times those with a low bill (like 40 cents!) made you work far harder than those will full course meals and even desserts.
