Just got back last week from my first time ever in Mauritius and i have to say i loved it. Normally i travel to the caribbean islands Dominican, Jamaica, Barbados and Mexico tulum ect where i have been going for years but this year i decided i wanted to try a completely different region and Mauritius was the place that caught my eye and the other reason i chose Mauritius was due to it's location in the southern hemisphere because i wanted to escape the freezing cold UK winter and wanted to go south of the equator where it is summer atm and Mauritius ticked all the boxes. I love it really hot and humid as well and thats another reason i chose january. I have to say i felt i could cope with the Mauritian heat better than the Caribbean heat though, because even though it was just above 30.c everyday in Mauritius i felt the heat wasn't too intense... If you go to places like Jamaica or the Dominican Republic in june or july the heat and humidity there can just get to unbearable levels and it makes the temp feel like 40.c in the direct sun and you have to retreat to the shade but in Mauritius while it was still very hot it didn't feel crazy blistering hot and i could cope with it. And best of all i didn't get one mosquito bite in Mauritius which is a first for me in a tropical location... in the caribbean i get savaged by them especially in the Samana Peninsula region of the Dominican Republic that has a lot of jungle and nature. The highlight of Mauritius for me was deffo Le Morne beach it is breath taking and that whole south western area with the waterfalls and rainforest ect and so much natural beauty. I'd deffo put Le Morne up there amongst the best beaches i have been too. I have been to a lot great ones and le morne is in that top tier bracket for sure.

Hi Lucy, please would you compile a video about the existing tax regime for expats in Mauritius? Happy New Year to you & the family!

Agreed, its a bit of a confusing one - I sent an email to the tax authority a couple weeks back hoping to get an answer. As best I can tell you are looking at 15% on income derived IN Mauritius and I read 'income derived from outside Mauritius is taxable only to the extent that it is received in Mauritius' at KPMG. To me, that is 'remittance tax' basis aka if you make say 100k in an offshore investment account and remit 50k to Mauritius, you would be liable for 15% on that 50k remittance (give or take) but I am not a Mauritius tax accountant! What I would like to know - when you buy your 1 million dollar luxury villa, is that a remittance and staring at 15% on top of any other taxes and fees aka making buying property quite lumpy in taxes.

@@yellowwducky I suspect that Mauritian tax authorities have intentionally maintained a vague & ambiguous tax code for expats so as to maximize tax revenue using 'gotcha' techniques.

Hi Lucy, I like your video s about Mauritius and was just wondering whether you had some more practical info video’s. What I’m still wondering are the monthly medical insurance costs. Now we pay 130 euro a month for me and my son under 18 and my wife has insurance from work. I was also wondering whether it is easy to do a 6 month check up with a dentist and whether you have found a nice dentist. Other questions I did not yet have an answer for are costs like communal tax and waste disposal tax. Thanks for all the great videos you have made

hi Lucy, have a cyklone quesrions. Any news on the Alvaro case? Forecasts indicate that it will possibly hit Mauritius on January 11-12. Do they usually cancel flights to Mauritius? we should land on January 13 at 7am.

Hello. At the moment windy isn’t showing any concern. I’d check forecasts 2-3 days before as it’s way too early now for reliable info.

Hotel/Grounds are very nice, but a recent refurb destroyed what was a nice restaurant area, last one of our four visits (Feb 2023) was a desaster, untrained/clueless young recruits, confusion in restaurant/kids running around etc, you get the drift, Pirogue next door much better managed, staff in pristine outfits etc
