I would be hesitant with some gems (amber opal, pearl, coral anything that is porous) going into an acetone bath. Have you had any bad experiences with softer gems and acetone Lucy?

Great video. However, I would be very cautious of suggesting to put Acetone in a sealed jar (especially if someone chose glass) and then placing it in a warm ultrasonic. I know, you know what you are doing, but for some watchers they might not be aware of just how flammable Acetone is and that it only requires a low concentration in air should it come into contact with for exampel a soldering flame, and more importantly with such a low evaporation point the jar could easily become over pressurised and break or react violently/release a large cloud of acetone when opened. Obviously, not if you keep the bath tepid, but many people crank up the temp of their sonics so it would work almost as well without heat but just take longer. Hope this helps 🙂 Also, would you use thermoplastic as a backing support for a fragile stone permanantly in a setting or do you have other suggestions for something permanant behind a stone please?

I'm not in the jewellry trade but I've had some thermoplastic in my cupboard at work for years and never used it and certainly never thought to use it to hold a small object to work on it easier. I wish I had thought of this 30 yrs ago.

Thank you for your demonstration. For those who are curious, Rio Grande JETT Basic thermoplastic contains 2-Oxepanone, polymer with 1,4-butanediol. These are the same ingredients as in Aquaplast. However, rather than in coming in the form of pellets as with JETT Basic, Aquaplast comes in the form of a thermoplastic sheet. Aquaplast is then cut into smaller pieces which are soften by heat and shaped into medical splints which are used for physical therapy.

Thanks so much for these instructions! I've used thermoplastic a couple of times before but was frustrated by how it turned out. I'm going to use your tips!

In always worried about putting my set cabochons in water to take it out of thermoplastic … won’t I potentially get water under the stone?

Once the thermoplastic is completely hard and in a block how would you then soften it enough to work with it again?? I find it difficult trying to heat it through with the boiled water. Maybe I should have certain shapes for certain shapes projects???

Hot glue sticks might do the job. They can be found with different melting points.
