Might also be worth noting - the fact the 10A tail draws 8A and the 15A tail draws 12A is due to issues with the US power standards, and Tesla not being aware of how the Australian standards differ. In the USA, their standards dictate that a device that draws a sustained current (such as an EV charger) for a long period should only draw 80% of the max. Australia doesn't have that restriction (you can draw 10A from a 10A and 15 from a 15A outlet for hours without an issue) but the designers of these tails didn't know this. Maybe you can get "custom" 10A and 15A tails which are rated at the amount? Not sure. The effective difference for anyone comparing at home: 8A x 240V = 1.92 kW (rounded to 2 kW on your screen) 10A x 240V = 2.4 kW 12A x 240V = 2.88 kW (rounded to 3 kW on your screen) 15A x 240V = 3.6 kW

Having owned a Tesla 3 for 3 years I have used all the cable options Tom has well demonstrated. However, I would add that a long, say 20m, 10 amp cable is essential for occasions where a motel or other site may have a 10 amp socket but outside the reach of the UMC. This I have used on several instances. Also, I carry a 20m 15 amp cable for the same reason but haven't found the need for this yet.

Great educational video, Tom. It helps to make sense of all the charging options which are somewhat baffling to new users like myself. Incidentally, yesterday I used the brand new charging station at Nabiac NSW, provided by the NRMA. It fills a large hole between Tesla charging stations in Port Macquarie and Raymond Terrace when driving up the mid North Coast. I have decided to rejoin the NRMA as a thank you for their provision of this additional infrastructure. Amazingly, it is free to use for non-members as well as members.

Absolutely brilliant Tom! This is a paradigm shift to trip planning - like here in Aus if someone just looked at PlugShare maps / Chargefox / NRMA / Tesla Superchargers, they'd be grossly limited. As an electrician, my question is, how does the mobile connector know what amp rated circuit you are plugged into? My concern is that the mobile connector will try to draw 32 amps from your 20 amp circuit and trip the circuit breaker. Let us know how you go!

@@stevenclarke7777 The tails have a small microprocessor built in about 8mm x 8mm. This tells the car the maximum amperage that can be drawn. It can be adjusted down but not up. Theoretically if you cut the 32mm plug off and wired a 15A plug on it would overdo it but you’d probably cut the microprocessor off when doing it and at least in Qld only an electrician should be RE wiring plugs.

If the wiring is good a 15 amp tail can be plugged into a ten amp outlet using an Ampfibian adaptor available from Bunnings. Charging is then 50% faster.

I agree, however, I will not that the time you leave your UMC in the garage is the time you will need it. If you want a cheaper install, buy a 2nd UMB and get a 32A socket installed in the garage. Saying that, the actual wall connector is only $200 more, so I'd still go for that. And if you are ever upgrading your mains or building a new house. Just get three phase power.

Buy a 15 amp extension lead and modify the end to a 10 amp plug. Cut the pin down. It is safe to pull 12 amps from a standard power point. Try it at home.

Or get an Amphibian from Bunnings which includes an RCD for a bit of safety. Even if you dial it down to 10A it's still 25% faster than the 8A of the "10A" plug.

Yes there’s always the risk that any adaptor can be removed at the outlet end. Most EVs will be able to lock the charger into the vehicle

I’ve done a few videos where I’ve used a Type 2 EV cable. I haven’t seen a Type 2 tail for the UMC. There are 7kW and 22kW Type 2 cables so yes if you have a charger that’s 3-phase capable then you can achieve a higher charge rate with a 22kW cable

Hi Tom, nice demonstration of charging options. A couple of questions: 1. I noticed that you plugged the cable into the car before plugging the other end into the socket and turning the plug on and also you turned off the plug before unplugging the cable from the car. This seems to be contrary to the advice in the manual: "If you are using the Mobile Connector, plug it into the power outlet before plugging it into the Model 3". Is there no issue doing it the way you did? 2. Why did you only get 7 kW on 32 amp 3-phase? Shouldn't this charge at the maximum rate of the onboard charger (11 kW), since P = V x I = 240 x 3 x 32 = 23,040 W = 23 kW?

Thanks Michael! Your first question is a good one - not sure to be honest - I’ve always done it this way with my mobile connector whether it be with my Model S that I’ve had since 2016 or with Joy’s Model 3 as you saw in the video. If someone can demonstrate that this is detrimental to the long term health of the car, I’d be happy to change my habits. With your second question, the Gen 2 UMC can only receive single phase hence 7kW max. I believe Gen 1 UMC (pre 2018) was three phase.

1. 3-phase power output uses a different calculation method than single phase. The formula for 3-phase is: P = √3 x I x V 2. The 2nd gen UMC is single phase only so even though there's a 3-phase tail, only a single phase is wired to the UMC. Using the single phase formula: 230V x 32A = 7.3kW

Tesla often states this clause as a blanket statement to cover themselves against third party charging equipment and accessories. There are many examples of both AC and DC charging for Tesla vehicles on social media and I’ve personally not come across any problems with this particular charging tail. This 3 phase plug adaptor is actually a hard choice given there are this 32A 5 pin, 20A 5 pin and 3 pin standards. For the cost of each option, it’s impractical to have all 3. Question is, which standard is most common out there?

I’ve heard of some people getting their electrician to wire a 32amp plug to the HPWC that comes with the car and take that away with them. That way you can actually use all three phases. I think Tesla doesn’t look on this favourably though as it hasn’t been designed to be portable... Is your charger at home three phase Tom? What would the charge time be for you at home with 46%?

The max AC the model 3 can take is 11kW (so it will be 2/3 the time of single phase 32kW). More benefit in an S/X which can do 16kW

@5OO846 Yup I think I know which photos you are referring to with the HWPC rigged up to 32A 😉 I have the older Gen1 HWPC so it’s 40A Single Phase which can deliver 9kW ... so at 46% SoC, it would be probably a touch over 3h to reach 80% using table napkin maths

Tom, your great input to my last query, has lead to another thought bubble. With model 3 mobile connector the charge limiting issue is the 7 kwH max on the type 2 mobile connector - so with a 3 phase 5 pin solution as you demonstrate in this video, the most that can flow via the 5 pin 3 phase tail connector is 7 kwh, yet a Model 3 can take 11 kwH (as you would see with a tesla wall charger and 3 phase). I went looking for a direct. 5pin to type 2 cable (which could offer 11 kWH of charge) but cant find such a cable - there are mobile charging units for around $2000 with this config - why not just a simple cable and let the tesla manage the power input?

Hi Tom. How often do you use the 32 amp tail? Did you have any problems with it? My UMC started playing up recently - it would only charge with the 10 amp tail, but could not get any current through the 15 or 32 tails. I had used it for a few weeks every week, charging 40 kWh each time before it happened. Tesla replaced my UMC on warranty no worries, but now I'm wondering what cooked the connector. Was it just one faulty unit and I was unlucky, or the UMC's spec of 32 amps max means that it can occasionally handle such current but not over many long sessions? Have you had any experience with that?

We are having a 20kw solar system installed on our shed and at the same time we are upgrading our power supply to 3 phase to allow us to feed more solar power back to the grid. While the electricians are here we are thinking of installing a 3 phase 32amp 5 pin socket in the shed. We don't have a Tesla yet but have a cybertruck preorder and we will probably also buy a $25,000 tesla once available in Australia or model 3 model Y as a second car. What are your thoughts on installing a 32amp 3 phase 5 pin plug in the shed. Is it overkill for a home charger?

Get a Zappi charger installed. Gen 2, 3 phase edition. Maybe Install a 32a socket while your at it for versatility, also to charge two ev’s at once if you really need to. Zappi can be set to only use excess solar energy. Perfect for a 20kw solar array.

@@matthewthomas9316 yep that is exactly what we did. We actually installed a 3 phase plug and have the 3 phase zappi plugged into it. Works perfectly and gives us an option to use the 3 phase plug for something else. We love the zappi.

Hi Tom, thanks for this video. I've purchased the 32A adaptor tail to use with the UMC Gen 2, and will get my electrician to install a 32a socket in the garage. I just have a couple of questions about using this set up: 1. Would it be safe to keep the 32A tail plugged in all the time? Does the power need to be turned off each time after use or can I keep it powered? 2. Any downsides to this setup compared to the dedicated HPWC? I read somewhere that there are more features if I installed the HPWC? As you know Tesla no longer supply the cars with these wall chargers..

Hi Raymond, whether you decide to keep it plugged in +/- turned on depends on your household situation ... is there a chance that someone could potentially injure themselves, especially children? A 3-phase HPWC can deliver an extra 4kW but apart from that, the current generation in Australia don’t allow for wifi controlled integration with the PowerWall, so no I don’t see any extra features/benefits. The 32A adaptor UMC tail is a good economical option 🙂👍

Can I just pick your brain again Tom? I’m just exploring a few options with regards to hone charging setup. Im contemplating installing the wall charger at home, and connect it to the off peak electricity meter.

Off peak electricity turns on at around 10pm and goes off at about 7am. If I connect the wall charger to the car of an evening, it won’t see any power until 10pm. Do you see any issues with this? I recall in your video that you connect the cable to the car and then turn on the power, and that seemed to work just fine.

@@markb3426 Hi Mark, that sounds fine to me. 10-7 is 9 hours which is an adequate amount of time if you’re charging at 7.4kW and more than enough if you’re getting the full 11kW (3 phase). If you leave your car plugged in before you go to bed each night, then it will only start charging when your off-peak kicks in. As an additional fail-safe if you’re concerned, you can also schedule the car to only start charging after 10pm. Hope that helps 👍🙂

Pleasure Greg. I should clarify - this is a 32A 7kW single phase plug but fits into 32A 3-phase sockets. The maximum you can ever get with Model 3 AC charging is 11kW anyway even at 3 phase

You could get a swag of adapters but the 3ph32A one in the video and the 2 that come with the car (10A,15A) will do 99% of points in Australia and give 2kW, 3kW,7kW. Could spend another $2200 and get a juice booster if you want 11.5kW.

Can you plug a charger into 2 10A wall sockets at once to get 20A total? i.e. get a charger tail that connects to 2 sockets and goes into 1 charger? I know you can plug 2 2.4kw heaters at once into 2 adjacent sockets.

Lizard64, I wouldn’t worry about dropping the charging current down to 16A from 32A. Teslas can EASILY handle a 32A charging rate, on an ongoing, continuous basis. In fact 32A would be considered a “light” charging current and in NO WAY would it damage the battery or reduce its lifespan. Where you do have to be cautious however, is in the use of the Tesla ( or other brands) of DC Superchargers. These SHOULD be used judiciously and sparingly, typically on medium to long road trips - the reason being that they can supply anything up to 300-400 Amps to your Tesla, depending on its state of battery charge. This is the very reason they can recharge the battery in such a relatively short time - typically 30-45 minutes. But such high charge rates do put some extra strain on the battery and can reduce its longevity by a small degree and so should be minimised. I’d suggest that if 10-15% of your total kilometres travelled were road trips with the use of superchargers, your battery will hold up very well. BTW, congratulations on getting your Model 3 - I’m still saving up for mine !! Which version are you getting? Do you know if you’re getting the refreshed one with the upgrades such as the heat pump and powered boot lid ?

wrong instruction. First, plug the mobile connector into the power outlet. Once the it s securely plugged into the power outlet, THEN connect the other end of the UMC to the charging port on your CAR. You plugged in a wrong order completely.

There’s a huge voltage drop from 10A/231v to 32A/220v. 32A*11v=350w energy dissipated. Please do a voltage drop video. I measured the back of my 32A socket and there were 5v drop from the PowerPoint to the car. That’s 32A*5v=160w energy disappeared as heat in that 6 metre UMC cable. The quality of gen 2 UMC worries me.
