Hi good explanation, can u tell how much current can we draw from a capacitive voltage divider? If the source current is 10A between two capacitors of same value,can we draw 5A from one capacitor terminals??

With regard to measuring high voltage AC, always measure the voltage at the inner most capacitors. That way if you catch an arc, you've at least divided the voltage in half, rather than eating the hole voltage. as far as using this as a voltage divider, I think i might be able to use this in a DC circuit, but i'd need to run a high value resistor in parallel with the top capacitor. That resistor would effectively match the impedance of the bottom half of the circuit, but, which would be kinda nifty to have a way to estimate that in some RF circuits.

nice video just one more point in the end " measure voltage across all the capacitors one by one add them and you get total voltage across transformer approximately instead of averaging :)

Yes but at 8:24 once you shorted out the capacitor on the right with the lamp , if given a few seconds wouldn't the other capacitor charge to the full voltage of the supply ?

How do you get away with putting capacitors on a AC circuit without a resistor? You would think it would act as a short circuit.
@walterbunn280
@walterbunn280 5 жыл бұрын
Capacitors on an AC circuit are resistors. In fact, they're resistors that don't produce heat, so if you're trying to prevent waste heat, capacitors have some advantage. To be honest though, even in DC current, they act as variable resistors according to the voltage levels across the circuit. As a capacitor comes up to charge, it becomes more resistive, all the way up to becoming an open circuit, which allows the capacitor to act as a voltage source at that point.... or explode.

Hey can I use voltage divider 2 times. Like 1/10 in your case. So 1/10×1/10=1/100. Measure even more higher voltage. May be restricted by capacitor max voltage
@Andres186000

You probably could, just factor in the tolerances of the actual capacity

Starting with 2 cap in series, C1 and C2. If you place other caps C3 in series with C4, but both in parallel to, say C1, then you change the equivalent total capacitor: ( C1 // (C3 ^ C4) ) ^ C2 (where ^ meaning being in series and // meaning being in parallel ) = (C1 + C3*C4/(C3+C4) ) // C2 , and so on... Instead, it would be simpler to remember that for two caps in series, the lower capacitance get the higher voltage: Voltage at C1 (in C1 ^C2 ) = V * C2 / (C1+C2), and voltage at C2 = V * C1 / (C1+C2). So, make C1 = 99*C2, and measure the voltage at … C1: V_C1 = V * C2 / ( 99*C2 + C2 ) = 0.01 V Note though that caps have, built in, a parallel resistor, Rpar, (look for Spice models of capacitors, such as at softsolder.com/2009/11/09/spice-crystal-model/) which can be much lower than the resistivity of the cap (at low frequency, such as for DC voltage) and so, the distribution of voltage across the two caps may be more like a division of tension by two resistors than by two caps. And for two resistors, the max voltage appears … at the max resistor, which is the reverse than when looking at the capacitances values! In conclusion, it is a very unsafe technique for DC, or for low frequency. In fact, when you charge ultra-capacitors in series, you SHOULD always add external resistor in parallel to each cap, for safety: va1der.ca/index.php/balance-resistors-for-series-capacitors/
