That was cool. Hard to imagine what would have happened.

Thank you for posting this video. At first I thought I knew what was going to hapoen, but as I watched I found out that I had been wrong in my thinking. I especially liked when you made one pendulum longer than the other. I’d like to try this myself, but with a very large set of pendulums; something with a period of several seconds or more on a jig that would allow for free circular motion so that the earth’s motion could be seen via precession. To me this shows that even the simplest of experiments have things to teach us if we’ve not dome them ourselves. And with our own twists. Great work. Thank you again. JIT.

This is an excellent demo. The usual school demos only show the behavior with equal lengths at a fixed separation. So your demo expands the possibilities. I especially like the demo with unequal lengths. That's an unexpected result. I'm curious what would happen if the shorter pendulum is driven. Perhaps attaching a magnet and placing it over a coil, like in a pulse motor.

I didn't expect the shorter one not stopping at all when the strings are different length. What happens when you start with the longer one? Somehow this is like impedance. If "impedance" is matched, the wave can propagate, if not part of it gets reflected and stays in one medium.

The phase of energy transfer is always at 90° so the one pendulum always gives energy to the other pendulum. Once no energy is left, the phase between the swings flips 180° to -90° (other direction) which flips the energy transfer back into the other pendulum.

For all the descriptive KZbin videos on this subject, is it not surprising that all except one ignore the fact that all the mathematical bases for the string-coupled pendulum were fully established for all its geometric variants and possible initial states decades ago? You will find the exception at kzbin.info/www/bejne/paa3l6yAl51sqbc
