I love the staging. It’s clean and the movement makes sense for the scene.

When they begin the dialogue, it reminds me of the Sir Galahad scene in Holy Grail when he finds the castle full of lonely maidens.

This was an American-British production produced by American Judith de Paul. In New Zealand we saw the series on our TVs in about 1982, many years ago to people living today. I remember that I saw the lot. The production is not the end-all in G & S, and in my youth it was the Doyley Cart productions under the baton of Malcolm Sergeant that I remember. But I have the whole series of the productions of which this is one, and I love them - particularly the Pirates, Princess Ida, Patience, The Gondoliers and The Yeoman of the Guard. But Trial by Jury and HMS Pinafore with Frankie Howard in the leading roles are also very good and period pieces in their own right.

The Pirate Movie, with Kristy McNichol, also came out in 1982.

I wonder what that Trial by Jury looks like, I don't seem to have found a production online of this level yet.

First of all the correct spelling is D'Oyly Carte. Secondly, Sir Malcolm Sargent was only a guest conductor for D'Oyly Carte and only recorded two operas with the company, YEOMEN in 1964 and PRINCESS IDA in 1965. Prior to that he was associated with the company in the 1930s and recorded some of the operas with them on 78s for HMV. His later EMI series had no connection with D'Oyly Carte but employed the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and the Pro Arte Orchestra. Those recordings in general have none of the theatrical feel of the DECCA/D'Oyly Carte series. The Brent Walker series was decidedly patchy with several of the operas sustaining cuts, most especially YEOMEN. The best of the series were COX AND BOX (which is not by Gilbert), THE SORCERER and PATIENCE.
