Sonor D505 is my favorite by far in this comparison. All of those are decent though.

There is a fact many people miss: the price of D4514. Sometimes it's very cheap, because no one get much attention...I got this one at a Japanese recycle store for about $ 4 0 . (with original head & snares) The good points of this snare will come out in the ensemble. Great sound but not overly assertive, and blends in well with the other instruments and vocals. It's the snare like my favorite everyday wear ;)

I have the older version of this snare, the one with the butt end with controller and I think it's a great snare. Very versatile and it's still in amazing good condition, given the fact it's from 1973. I bought it for 60 euro. A bargain! 😉

I bought mine for just 20 EUR! It was in a quite nasty condition. All it needed was a decent cleanup and I'm waiting for new heads and snarewires. Can't wait to play it!

I just watched a John Scofield concert with Idris Muhammad on drums and his snare sounded killer! I think it was this pearl! It was hard to see but it had this ringy pop that I like! Where can you find one of these or is there another name for it other then the model number!

Thank you for the video! Did you tune the snare the same way? By ear or by pitch? Do they have the same snare wires? The airyness of the ludwig is great, and on medium and low tunings it has better tone than the other two. I just bought a seemingly rare 5x14 Pearl script logo "steel" drum very much alike this one although it has small vertical lines on the "support" beam, have you seen something like this? I hope i can get a similar tone to the ludwig. Cheers!!

are the 70's supraphonics and supersensitives basically the same drum with a different throwoff system? Also do you think that one could mod a 70's supersensitive to have more of a regular or more modern throwoff? Just curious. Theres a good deal on a supersensitive near me and its in killer condition. I mostly do punk/rock/hard rock. Also wondering if it would be a good recording drum for those genres. I assume if its similar to a suraphonic than it will be!
@choglatemilg4 жыл бұрын
this is kinda late but i believe the only difference between the SS and the Supraphonic was the throw off and strainer system, otherwise i believe they are both made of ludalloy w/ same dimensions. not sure if the strainer/throw off requires more holes to be drilled or not - hope that somewhat helps

The supersensitive is much drier than the superphonic

If you got the supersensitive take any gaskets off and set them aside it will help immensely with tone😉👌pro tip👍🤙

That Sonor is hands down miles above that Ludwig snare. The Ludwig sounds like a cardboard box through a cheap guitar reverb stompbox. The Pearl is a VERY close second. How and why so many people get so worked up over Ludwig still astounds me. You get a Ludwig drum set and surround it with DW hardware? You got pure unadulterated junk. Not if they were the only tubs in the casino...

Exactly my thoughts. But... John Bonham used Ludwig, Ringo too. People see a famous drummer playing a certain brand and automatically become attached to it. It's funny how often we buy with our eyes instead of our ears. Less well known fact is that Bonham played Sonor before the American tour, and Ringo used Premier, which he was very pleased with. However, neither Premier nor Sonor could provide equipment in the US because they didn't have an extensive network of distributors that Ludwig took advantage of. It's interesting how both Premier and Sonor lost battles even though they had better "weapons" - German beech (Sonor) and Scandinavian birch (Premier) vs maple/poplar Ludwig. Would Bonzo and Ringo have become worse drummers if they had remained loyal to Sonor and Premier? I don't think so. After all, another great drummer, Art Blakey once said “I am an instrument”. I can completely agree with that.

Lemme guess, you guys are Zildjian players, lol. Most of the cult-like ass kissing I see in the drumming community are towards Zildjian, DW, Tama, Pearl, Gretsch, Sonor, Paiste, Meinl, Vic Firth, Promark, Evans, and SJC. Maybe people buy Ludwig drums, because they sound really good at a reasonable price? And maybe people use DW hardware, because it simply just works? Idk what it is with the drumming community and throwing dirt at DW, Keller, and Ludwig, and kissing Zildjian's ass whenever the opportunity presents itself. Zildjian hasn't made a cymbal worth the ink printed on it, since Agop and Mehmet were the ones making their cymbals. And Tama has managed to harbor the douchiest group of fanboys in the drumming community since the day they went into business, and moved all manufacturing to China in the process. But yet we'll kiss those companies' asses, and throw shade at companies that put out halfway decent stuff, because it's the popular thing to do for some reason.

@@jareddoran6605 Ludwig are trash. I spent 2300 on a Ludwig custom order kit in 1978. I was 15. Washed dishes at $1.65/hr to pay for em. The wrap pulled away at the seems after 6 weeks. Ludwig refused to honor their own warranty. Ludwig is the biggest piece of crap overrated chunks of junk to ever rip off a teenage kid back in Missouri. You play em if they’re so good. FTR: my band has it in our contract: if you supply the backline, and Ludwig drums are present, you lay us AND we don’t play. Worst shit every created.

@@jareddoran6605 I Hate Zildjian. I’m a Meinl guy. Truth: Ludwig are junk. And their warranty is a joke. They’re in the business of ripping people off, first and foremost. If they happen to occasionally sell a drum that doesn’t completely suck, or fall apart? Hey, a broken clock is right once a day.
@jareddoran66052 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmbliss777 Meinl is just as shit of a company as Zildjian and DW. The only thing good Meinl has ever put out, is the Byzance Series, and they don't even make them, Murat Diril does. Meanwhile Murat Diril's cymbals that aren't rebranded, are some of the best cymbals I've personally ever heard. And Ludwig's renaissance of the last 10 - 15 years, is because of Josh Allen, who now runs his own company, INDe drums, and puts out reimagined versions of the Atlas stuff he designed for Ludwig, and doesn't charge a premium. Maybe I'm weird, but I prefer to support small companies and people that actually make their own stuff, rather than rebranded OEM stuff from a company that's already too big for their own good. But even as far as the big companies go, Ludwig is still the best bang for your buck (in comparison to DW, Pearl, Tama, Gretsch, Sonor, Yamaha, and the likes)

Listening with good headphones and without watching, I must say that there is not much difference in sound. The nuances that these drums bring in are meaningless in a real life. I would take any of these if I ever needed a metal snare. One thing I wished was to hear the drums when cranked into a high, funky note, but thanks anyway 👍

This would be better with the Pearl removed from video. The real battle is between the luddy and the Sonor.
