Being me, I would have probably either powder coated it or fully stripped it to have it anodized but that's just because I never would have thought to do the relic/rustic thing. All in all it looks great and still sounds great, that's all that matters.

It could also be sandblasted now after the chrome is off, then you would get a more consistent matte finish I guess. But still, everything feels better than the flaky chrome.

I've also heard that you can sandblast a shell removing the Chrome. Then polish up the bare aluminum shell and it'll look really nice. I seen an example of this once and it looked great. Also seen somebody take off most of the Chrome feather the edges and spray paint with a really nice blue color and that turned out nice to

Should have tried 0000 steel wool. It may not help with pitting but it can make stuff shine. I would have thrown glue in the badly blistered/pitted areas and then throw glitter at it to match whatever kit it was going with. That or rubbed some ash or something dark into the voids. I like the way it turned out though.

I have a super sensitive I did the same thing too. I ended up getting some nice swirl patterns and it almost looks hammered. On a regular keystone Supra, I was able to sand most of it out with an belt sander on an angle and then paint it with automotive paint and clear. Super sensitive has been sitting since I am not sure if I love it, but I found the nickel underneath was the worst part.
@vincentbuonora84774 жыл бұрын
You might try an aluminum sealer\primer and then powder paint. You did a lot of work but it required more to get to its original aluminum. Rest on it, then make a plan for a spray paint finish; many options....

@BruceRichardsonMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey man. That would probably be a pretty good base for a tinted automotive clearcoat finish. OR...even a glitter coat if you know an automotive guy who's really good. If you did a glitter coat first in chrome glitter, the trick would be to create a turntable rig to hit it at a slight angle, so that the center feature gets properly coated on the first two passes, then finally on the third pass spray it dead on to even everything out. Bearing edge would need to be taped through that process, and then pull the tape and give the edge of the glitter coat a sand to make sure that there are no rough spots you can feel. Then clear or tint clearcoats. You'd end up with something that looked like the slickest ever glitter wrap. Once you got the hardware back on it, it would be ludicrous. For a Supra, I think that would be a much more interesting option than a patina. You literally never see that type of shell with something that looks like a wrap, since it would be technically almost impossible to achieve at scale.

It’s your drum so no judging you. But I think this drum deserves some respect so if it were mine I would do a full resto on it. The look of this snare reminds me of the style of the previous generation Gretsch Full Range Brushed Brass snares. I wonder if this has any effect on the sound of the drum, but I like whatever it did to this drum. Also, that Sonor finish style would be super cool to try doing in the future!!
