The early piano trios, played by the wonderful Beaux Arts Trio, were in my youth -- and still are today -- distinctly memorable on account of , among other things, the jacket of the records I had (and listened to endlessly) as a youth. It's Beethoven's first publication with Opus number. He was very cautious to select pieces to be titled as Opus. 1 so that he could show the Viennese the difference from old masters like Haydn and Mozart. Especially, the last one out of Opus. 1, trio No.3 in c minor clearly shows the Beethoven himself. It's very interesting Haydn didn't like the trio in c minor to be published saying Viennese woundn't accept it.

조진 There is no evidence that Haydn did not like the trio; he recognised it as the best of the three but perhaps too difficult for the public and hence suggested that he would have advised against its publication (he was looking out for Beethoven) - a view in which he was actually probably mistaken. The three trio’s were played to Haydn by Beethoven at Prince Lichnowsky’s residence in August 1795, that is, almost immediately on Haydn’s return from over 18 months in England; it is more than reasonable to suggest therefore, that Haydn was somewhat out of touch with Viennese musical life, and perhaps tastes.

Immer wenn ich op. 1 (nun schon zum wiederholtesten Male) höre, versetze ich mich in den Moment der Uraufführung. Beethoven am Klavier, Haydn unter den Zuhörern.. über op. 1 schwebt für mich persönlich ein, so gesehen, einzigartiger historischer Geist... der eine ältere Genius und Lehrer hört dem jüngeren Hochtalent zu bei seiner ersten Aufführung des von ihm selbst op 1 genannten Streichtriokomplexes...

@@arnoldvdwaals The only other version I heard on KZbin was the live performance by Kempff, Szerying and Fournier (I think). It was played at a slower tempo.
