Skypiea being disliked is misguided imo. I think a lot of people aren’t as attached to the side characters aside from the Noland backstory, and that clouds their evaluation of it. I think it’s a great arc, and had a lasting impression on me on my first watch as it was the first place in One Piece that had a fantastical element to it. That grouped with the great crew moments and emotional punches made it one of the most memorable early on for me.

I feel like Skypiea have the weakest side characters in the whole story, except for Noland and maybe Viper, all the other characters aren't good. Hell even the antagonist is not that good, well probably because his motives are unclear, which i understand might be intentional to tie it up with something in the future. IT IS one of the funniest arc and the crew interactions are amazing, that I will give to this arc. Also the plot relevancy too.

The skypeia skippers/haters are just some vocal minority and a small one that if there is any left that is because as the story as progressed, skypeia is actually one of if not most important arc retrospectively. And it just makes sense because unlike other arcs and sagas which have their main themes separately ofc still mostly being one of the major themes of op but no other arc encapsulates what one piece is all about at its cores , the adventure, dreams, liberation. (Other than the found family and friendship aspect of themes) Skypeia portrays all the main op themes perfectly.

I think the reason people disliked Skypiea early on was because it “didn’t tie into the rest of the story”, which is nuts to me because One Piece is literally all about adventure and exploring new and exciting places. To me this arc shook me to the core the first time I watched it, and it’s definitely one of the most romantic parts of this story out there. Peak romanticism 🙏 Can’t wait for the finale

The argument that skypiea isn't tie into the rest of the story is easily debunkabke because it will mean that blackbeard will be a filler character as any Jaya's character or that annything related to Usopp, Robin or the Merry in the W7 saga will not happen either.

Its crazy to think about Skypeia's importance for the future. It's one of those arcs that grows on you the more episodes you watch when you notice the ties. Obviously i wont spoil anything but my fellow manga readers know what im talking about with that recent chapter. This arc ties in with so many parts of One Piece its genuinely insane. Some of, if not the biggest reveals were foreshadowed in this arc. btw, just incase for those who want to add on what im saying, be careful with your wording please. Try not to spoil or "hint" at these reveals/foreshadowing/ties.

Hello Carlie and Ange, nice discussion as always (27:23 I think you were talking about Kouina who was more of a rival, in a positive way, to Zoro). Fun fact: For what I have read so far, Luffy does not "think" in the manga (he has no internal dialog, no "bubble" for the reader to have an idea of what he is thinking) which means that he only shines through his words and actions. It is a deliberate choice, in my opinion, as all the other characters, specially the straw hats, have panels with internal dialogs.

I mostly agree, but Luffy does have a few thought bubbles, just not that many since he either tends to voice what he's thinking or act on it. Most of the time he's shown having an emotional reaction to something that he remembers or something that he's being told, so a lot of people overlook what goes on in his mind. It's often not put into dialogue or explanatory text, but manga puts a lot of weight on facial expressions and body language, as well as on actions taken in response to things. And, of course, through dialogue, but it tends to be circumspect rather than direct (though Luffy is more direct than most).

My favorite part of skypeia is actually how the pacing picks up towards the end. Like you have Luffy vs Enel on the maxim, and then its just escalates so quickly as we get hellfire raining lightning from above. Its so crazy. And while an isolated incident, the scale and stakes of whats happening are super high.

I LOVE this arc, from the very 1st time i watched it, one thing one piece is about is adventure and this arc really gives me that, since the moment that we were told of a sky island and how we were going to get up there i was in! And the more i watched the more amazed i was. It truly was the first arc that got me speechless, thinking "oh this is great" i liked it op before but this arc took it to another level for me. I'm caught up and is in my top 5, probably my #3 fav arc. Its so GOOD and funny too and one thing i don't like is when ppl say or just care about the arc bc of some foreshadowing, its good on its own! Meet-Up of Wyper and Montblanc Cricket will be One of the whole some moments in the series. Narrtively, Skypiea is the most important arc till episode 1080. It is one of the most Important Backstory in the whole series. "Where's West" is actually an underrated great question. Remember, normal compasses don't work on the Grand Line, so any orientation has to be done by the stars, sun, or other environmental cues, all which are tough to do with giant storm clouds blotting our the sky. Zoro being Zoro has nothing to do with this task being difficult, for once.

I think the discussion is the most fun part, honestly! It's so interesting to hear what you think about what's going on and how you interpret things. Skypiea isn't as well loved as other arcs mostly because the anime really does drag it out to an unreasonable extrent. It messes up the narrative tension and energy of the adventure in too many places, and this arc (aside from the more seriouis themes) is very much about adventure in and of itself. (As an example, Luffy didn't try to get to Ener through the same useless means over and over again, that's the anime filler padding the episode out. The fight against Satori also was SO MUCH SHORTER, that part was made extremely tedious in the anime. And so on and so forth, with a lot of little things that add up to a large effect. There's just a lot of repetition that gets annoying. It's not even the worst arc for it, to be honest, but it's the first one where it's this noticeable, I'd say.) As for the romance, I think that it's both that it doesn't really fit with the tone most of the time (and Oda has pretty much stated that that's the reason why he doesn't include it), but I also think that to make it good and not feel tacked on and superficial it would take up too much space in an already packed story, you know? Also, the couple I prefer would have no chance to be made canon at all, so I selfishly prefer to have no confirmation of anything so that I can imagine whatever I want, lol.

Oda said he will not write romance within the crew but mostly bc he think he cant do it (after he said that he at least showed more romance stuff outside of the crew) and also many ppl see the crew as a family, but there is also a huge bubble of ppl who ship all the straw hats (as in a poly relationship) bc you cant pick the best straw hat they are all so great, loved (and in need of love giving their back stories) and unique and every straw hat has their special connection to every other straw hat that comes with chemistry and behaviour you only get to see between these two, which is wonderful to see. Watching Chopper and Robin is special in one way, Namis relationship with Luffy is special, but also her connection with Sanji or with Usopp, the relationship between Zoro and Sanji is unique as well you will be able to finde something special in every Duo if you think about it. The filler episodes usually tell a bit more about it but it that doesnt mean that the chemistry is not canon. Sometimes Oda uses the background of a panel to indicate stuff that can be easily missed and the anime created a whole scene or episode around this detail which is awesome. Also the one piece shipping community is HUGE Bc the straw hats are giving so many loving vibes in this very positive way its getting more and more every arc And robin and zoro are choppers parents, thats a fact 😂

I think the problem most people had with Skypeia was the lack of impact it had in the world. None of the crew's exploits make waves in the "normal" world. p.s. - Ange, have you listened to any Polyphia? You might really like them if not (check out G.O.A.T, Playing God, Ego Death, or O.D. for a start).
